Lela Rose Fall 2012: A Love for Linear Curves

Lela Rose Fall 2012: A Love for Linear Curves

“I am really an architecture buff, and I love Santiago Calatrava, who’s a Spanish architect,” Lela Rose said to us moments before her fall show. “He talks about these poetics of motion and romance and fluidity, yet he’s this architect working with steel in very linear ways. This collection is about the dichotomy of long, lean, angular silhouettes combined with romance and fluidity.”

Angular yet fluid it was, as well as elegant, but still sort of fun. Graphic floral and digitized plaid sheath dresses with sharp shoulders and sculpted waists in navy, pumpkin, cream, black, mustard, and magenta were shown alongside delicate yet heavily embellished red carpet-worthy frocks with sweetheart necklines and mesh paneling.

Here’s What Some of Our Favorite Designers Are Going As For Halloween

Halloween weekend is finally upon us! We’ve had Halloween costumes on the brain all week and we’re not the only ones. We decided to ask some of our favorite designers what they were planning on dressing up as because we figured that, as fashion designers, they’d have some pretty creative ideas. And we were right.

From censored porn stars to an Irish version of Patty from Absolutely Fabulous, click through to find out what 12 of our designer friends told us about their costumes, and, if you care, our own costumes as well!

Lela Rose Spring 2012: Neon Graveyard

Lela Rose Spring 2012: Neon Graveyard

Lela Rose’s spring collection featured pieces that are a bit bolder than her usual ladylike frocks, in a good way. The designer drew inspiration from sin city’s Neon Museum—also known as the Neon Graveyard—a spot that houses unrestored, neon signs that used to dot Coney Island and Las Vegas. “The inspiration is definitely a different vibe and feel,” the designer told us backstage. “We did all of these faded neon colors which I think is definitely a departure of what we normally do with the color palette.”

Rose was a little more playful this season, and matched bright mosaic patterns aptly named “carnival prints” with neon yellow and orange lace knits. Of course, she offered plenty of shifts and sheaths, but this time around they were punched up with bright floral patterns and deep orange and yellow hues that recalled a sunset. The structured silhouettes mixed with wilder prints created a balanced and polished looked for day or night. As for the shoes, Rose paired up with Payless again to offer fabulous and wallet friendly footwear. We spotted plenty of vibrant wedges that will be sure to update any spring wardrobe.

With Over 250 Designers Showing at New York Fashion Week, Scheduling Conflicts Put Designers in a Tough Spot

Every season New York fashion week gets bigger and bigger. When Ruth Finley, who is the keeper of the Fashion Calendar (aka your hard copy fashion week bible) started planning and putting out the New York fashion week calendar 65 years ago she estimates there were, at most, five shows a day, no more than one an hour. This Friday alone, on the second day of Fashion Week, there are 34 shows.

“When [New York fashion week] started there was only one show an hour and now we have almost 300 in eight days,” Finley says. “There’s quite a bit of overlapping and there used to be no overlapping.”

While New York fashion week’s exponential growth is undeniably a sign of its health (and that’s a good thing!), that “overlapping” of shows that Finley refers to–when you have five or more shows crammed into an hour–can also hurt the designers who’ve put in all that effort and money to show their wares. As more designers flood the New York fashion week schedule, it becomes more challenging for designers to make sure their collections are presented the best they can be. Top models and styling teams go to bigger labels with more pull and more money. Editors and buyers–though they might not always look it–are human, and can only make it to a limited number of shows per day.

Designers are feeling frustrated.

Lela Rose Answers Your Wedding Fashion Questions: Day 4

In honor of bridal fashion week, designer Lela Rose has been kind enough to answer your wedding day style questions.

Dear Lela,

I have a question…it’s actually about what to wear to a wedding: I have a wedding to attend in July in upper Wisconsin. I will be either nine months pregnant or recently a new mommy. What would be chic, comfortable, and something that will not say “Come touch my belly” in either scenario? I have a petite and slender frame, any ideas?

Lela Rose Answers Your Wedding Fashion Questions: Day 3

In honor of bridal fashion week, designer Lela Rose has been kind enough to answer your wedding day style questions.

Hi Lela!

My question: traditional etiquette dictates that simple, small jewelry is more elegant for a bride. I am wearing a strapless dress and no veil, so was thinking about dramatic earrings, but concerned that it’s not appropriate. What’s your view on bridal jewelry? What looks best with a simple strapless gown?

Lela Rose Answers Your Wedding Fashion Questions: Day 2

In honor of bridal fashion week, designer Lela Rose has been kind enough to answer your wedding day style questions.

Dear Lela,

I’m on a budget and I’m planning to have a DIY wedding, however I want to have a wedding dress that doesn’t go over $500! I also am seeking an off-white short (knee-length or above-the-knee) dress since I’m petite (5’3″). What do you suggest?

Lela Rose Fall 2011: Walking Canvases
Reviews

Lela Rose Fall 2011: Walking Canvases

We were pretty much sold on the Lela Rose collection the minute we tasted the cookies in our gift bag, homemade straight from Lela’s kitchen. It turns out, the clothes were just as mouth-watering as the sugary treats.

Inspired by contemporary German painter Gerhard Richter, Rose translated scraped prints and “hazy and obscured imagery” from canvas to fabric to create a frothy, abstract collection with a water-color palette.

Lela Rose die-hard Brittany Snow sat pretty in the front row in a blue and cream Richter-esque printed dress paired with gray knee highs, straight from the runway. Along with an array of dainty peplum, strict seamed, and cinched bow frocks and feather embroidered skirts, the collection featured some striking floor-length numbers. Among our favorites were a black and white plaid chiffon strapless gown layered over a green long-sleeved shirt, a mint brushed chrome gown, and a dip-dyed gray and white gown with a veiled shoulder.

Models wore shoes from Rose’s latest Payless line, and we have to say–they’re amazing. We can’t wait to pick up a pair of camel suede platform wedges with a red wave detail on the sole.
