Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2012: This Is What You Want

It was weird to walk into the Lexington Avenue armory and see a straightforward runway set for Marc by Marc Jacobs–no evidence was left of Rachel Feinstein’s magical set for Marc Jacobs’ show the night before. A the same time it made Marc Jacobs’ show feel that much more magical and fleeting.

Jacobs’ collection for his contemporary line, Marc by Marc, made much less of an impact than his RTW collection–no ginormous brightly colored fur Jamiroquai hats here–but the clothes were wearable (and comfortable looking!) and hipster friendly. Many of the models were styled a la Jenna Lyons with thick framed glasses wearing Daria-esque loose day dresses in vibrant prints. Blazers and knits were worn over knee-length pleated school girl skirts (these were not of the slutty cheerleader variety).

Holiday Gift Guide: Custom and Personalized Presents for Everyone on Your List

Having your name or initials emblazoned on something never gets old. It goes back to that pride you felt back in third grade, when writing your name into your favorite books sent a statement to the world: “This is mine.” (And if you’re like me, you also drew a unicorn and stars for good measure) As far as gifts go, something personalized or custom-designed shows that you put a bit of effort into it, when you could totally just buy an iTunes gift card.

With that in mind, we gathered a bunch of customizable gift ideas at various price points. Whether your recipient is into fashion or not, here are ten ideas for cool custom gifts. Click through to check them out.

Holiday Gift Guide: Designer Gifts You Can Fit Into a Stocking (and Your Budget)

Wanna get someone a fabulous gift that’s designer without breaking the bank? You totally can. In fact, a lot of designer labels cater to people like us who want to be fancy but for whom the Miu Miu shoes and Alaïa dresses we really want are far out of reach.

These aren’t knock-offs or collaborations or makeup, but real designer items that we would actually be very happy to find under the tree or in a stocking. Now if someone could tell us where to put stockings when you don’t have a fireplace, that would be great.

From Prada to Alexander Wang to Alaïa (seriously!), here are the 14 best little designer gifts that less than $300 can buy!

Here Are 10 Great Bags That Cost Less Than $300 (We Even Found an Alexander Wang)

Sometimes it feels like everyone in New York City is carrying either a Proenza Schouler PS1 or a huge Chanel bag. While dropping $2,000 on a bag is an “investment” for some people, for others it’s just plain out of reach. We were convinced that there had to be fantastic, high-quality, well-designed bags out there for less than $300 (which don’t make you resort to buying Kardashian knock-off bags.) And we were right!

From the high street stores to some of our favorite designers–like Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs–we found 10 bags to fit most budgets (we’re talking $300 or under here) and pretty much any style.

Click through to see our finds.

Marc by Marc Jacobs SS12: The Calm Before the Dior Storm, with Dior Predictions by Olivier Zahm

Marc by Marc Jacobs’ SS12 show felt especially poignant yesterday. As the crowd built up inside the Lexington Armory, whispers about Dior could be heard in every section and every row. The minimal set of a plain white runway and backdrop were especially stark compared to Marc’s famously elaborate sets and antics. From 7:30 to 8pm all guests were ushered in and seated, without any ruckus occurring when Elle Fanning, Carine Roitfeld, and Robert Duffy took their seats in the front row. Everyone and everything was quite calm. It was as though everyone knew that come this time next season, Marc Jacobs would be married to his deadlines at Dior, and thus less likely to be as attached design-wise and presentation-wise to MxMJ’s flounced peplums and plastic visors.
