Michael Kors on the Worst Fashion Mistake He Ever Made, His Bar Mitzvah Theme, and Why He Hates Maxi Dresses

Last night Fern Mallis interviewed Michael Kors as the last installment of her ‘Fashion Icons’ series at the 92nd Street Y. Not only is Kors one of the most prolific (and most likable) designers, but he’s also one of the most quotable.

Mallis asked Kors about everything from changing his name (he was born Karl Anderson Jr.) to meeting his husband Lance Le Pere (previously a Kors’ intern) and Kors’ answers were thoughtful and funny. Audience members laughed, applauded, and even aww-ed (“What makes me smile? Lance makes me smile,” Kors responded to one question) as the designer talked about his life and work.

Read on for the best Kors quotes of the night.

Fashion Pets: Meet our Favorite Designers’ Four-Legged Furry Friends

People love pets– and designers are no exception. With all the constant crazy talk happening in the fashion world, who wouldn’t want a verbally challenged companion? It’s easy to understand what makes pets so appealing to the fash pack: No amount of cross-breeding could produce a canine or kitten with the ability to question, “What’s going on with John Galliano? Is Kim the new Gwyneth? And those wigs at Chanel… why??” They may shed fur all over your best black suit, but they’ll also still love you regardless of what Anna Wintour thinks of your F/W collection.

The late Alexander McQueen famously left his three beloved dogs the extremely generous (though probably under-appreciated) postmortem gift of £50,000. And while it’s safe to say that not all designers would go so far as to supply their pets with a year’s salary, it’s clear that their animal friends hold a dear place in their hearts.

Fashion News Roundup: Lauren Conrad Covers Her New Beauty Book, Kim Kardashian Launches Her First ‘Luxury’ Fragrance, and Beyoncé Gets a Writing Award

Because Beyoncé is literally good at everything, now she’s getting a writing award. {HuffPo via ONTD}

Hats From the Fall 2012 Runways We Hope to See at the Kentucky Derby

As everyone knows, the Kentucky Derby is the oldest, most prestigious gathering of preposterously big, totally unnecessary hats in North America.

And while we hear there’ll also be some nice horses running around a track, the part we’re obviously most looking forward to is scoping out what new and crazy heights Derby-attendees will go to with their chapeaux. Luckily for them, the Fall 2012 runways offered no shortage of showstopping toppers from Marc Jacobs’ unforgettable Jamiroquai-inspired hats, to Anna Sui’s goofy knit caps.

Click through for the Fall 2012 hats we hope make an appearance at the Kentucky Derby this weekend.
