It’s the buzziest, most fashion-y red carpet of the year and it’s finally here! Welcome to the 2012 Met Ball red carpet! Finally, finally, Beyonce made it to the red carpet in the sheerest of Givenchy and the red carpet’s a wrap. So far we’re loving: Anna Wintour’s Prada-designed homage to Schiaparelli’s lobster dress; Prom Read more →
Many modern brides walk the line these days of wanting to maintain some tradition in their weddings while also highlighting their individuality. For sartorial risk takers, bridal designers have plenty of options for brides who want something besides the usual full skirted ivory gown with a sweetheart neckline (not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course.)
Rules are falling by the wayside: bright color, interesting hemlines, and even pants (and a crop top!) walked down the aisle runway for spring 2013.

I can’t lie. As I took my seat for the Monique Lhuillier runway show at Lincoln Center, I couldn’t help but imagine Beyoncé Knowles emerging from a one-month maternity leave as I recalled that black sequined frock of Lhuillier’s the diva wore to her husband’s performance at Carnegie Hall. As the show started, I could Read more →
Don’t get us wrong: We love us some white, frothy wedding gowns.
That being said, it’s nice to see some variation on the runways every once and a while–and this season definitely showed a number of unconventional looks that were a refreshing change.
But while we love that bridal gown designers are thinking more outside the box: Does a bride really want to take a sartorial chance on her wedding day? (Doesn’t she already have too many other things to worry about?) Or do you think wearing an atypical gown is the perfect way for a bride-to-be to show off her individuality?
Check out the top five unconventional trends to emerge from bridal fashion week. Would you wear any of them on your big day?
After all the hub-bub over the royal wedding–and particularly, the wedding dress–we were sure we’d see a slew of Middleton-inspired looks this bridal season. But according to the Wall Street Journal, “bridal experts played down any Kate Middleton effect.”
Although Middleton’s gown attracted over 600,000 visitors when on display at the Buckingham palace, it hasn’t been as big a hit for civilian brides. “Other designers copied [Middleton's gown] and had it on the runway right away, but what we noticed though, is that nobody bought it,” designer Gregory Nato of Fancy New York bridal, told the Journal.
Indeed, bridal heavy-hitters like Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier and Carolina Herrera showed almost exclusively bare-armed looks and many of the silhouettes bore only a vague (if any) resemblance to the famous Sarah Burton for McQueen dress. However there was a familiar silhouette, perhaps thanks to another royal wedding of sorts: that mermaid/trumpet style Kim Kardashian chose for her big day was everywhere–on the runways of Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta and Monique Lhuillier. Could Kim K really have more selling power than Kate Middleton when it comes to wedding dresses? Hmm….
We’re rolling (in the) deep with the shows right now, and this latest batch is quite spectacular. Hop over to our
Sitting behind Mandy Moore and Julianne Hough at Monique Lhuillier is several things. Blinding, of course, due to flashbulbs incessantly snapping the former pop star and Dancing With The Stars champion. A bit surprising, too: who knew Mandy Moore was that tall (runway model height, basically)? And last but not least, prophetic.
Six months from now, we’re pretty sure both starlets will be dueling in a tabloid “Who Wore It Best?”, posing hand-on-hip in look number nine. “I love it,” said Hough as the black, off-the-shoulder cocktail dress with leather side paneling slinked down the runway, and Moore nodded wide-eyed, eager.
These days, it feels like all the fashion girls want Monique Lhuillier to design their wedding gowns. And that all the starlets want Monique Lhuillier to design their red carpet dresses. Personally, we just want to buy something off the rack. The Los Angeles-based designer’s Resort 2012 collection seems to have something for everyone.

Monique Lhuillier opened her fall show with something strange: leopard print. But Hollywood starlets who turn to Lhullier for her pretty and purposefully not–sexy looks need not fear this new beast. When Monique Lhuillier does animal print, it’s Dolce & Gabbana Lite: watered down, diluted spots, tamed in a way that renders the print elegant, tranquil, calm- never cougar.
Lhuillier is a lady, after all; or at least, her customer is, and one who needs a whole lotta graceful evening wear at that. For fall, the designer delivered accordingly, in lace, chiffon, and heaps of black that colored a departure from the indigos, plums, and fuschias she showed for pre-fall.
