Moschino Spring 2013

Clothes: Among the mod dresses and pop art patterns there was no doubt about where Moschino creative director Rossella Jardini drew inspiration this season: The Swinging Sixties were in full effect throughout the collection. A-line mini-minis, kick flares, and contrast piping along pockets and collars all helped to deliver the retro message with flair. There Read more →

Normal Dudes Try to Make Sense of the Menswear Shows, Are Hilarious

Normal Dudes Try to Make Sense of the Menswear Shows, Are Hilarious

We spend most of our time covering womenswear so we delight in the menswear shows because designers tend to take much bigger risks on the runway. Pink lace up bikini briefs? Intricate bondage? Quirky colorful top hats? Koosh-ball-like head coverings? It was all there on the runways of London, Milan and Paris.

So we had to know: What do “real” men think about these outrageous ensembles?

To find out, we reached out to our friends in the media who aren’t fashion-affiliated–like Daniel Edward Rose of The Observer, Jo Piazza of Current TV, who, while a lady it’s true, admits she has the mindset of a 13-year-old boy, and Elie Mystal of our brother site Above the Law. But we didn’t stop there: we hit the streets of NYC to poll all the men we could find about these crazy looks.

Hats From the Fall 2012 Runways We Hope to See at the Kentucky Derby

As everyone knows, the Kentucky Derby is the oldest, most prestigious gathering of preposterously big, totally unnecessary hats in North America.

And while we hear there’ll also be some nice horses running around a track, the part we’re obviously most looking forward to is scoping out what new and crazy heights Derby-attendees will go to with their chapeaux. Luckily for them, the Fall 2012 runways offered no shortage of showstopping toppers from Marc Jacobs’ unforgettable Jamiroquai-inspired hats, to Anna Sui’s goofy knit caps.

Click through for the Fall 2012 hats we hope make an appearance at the Kentucky Derby this weekend.

Moschino Fall 2012: ’80s Matadors and Bringing Back the Fanny Pack

Moschino Fall 2012: ’80s Matadors and Bringing Back the Fanny Pack

Moschino never strays far from their playful, somewhat gaudy style–and that’s precisely why we love the brand. Last season, it was all about the matador and for Fall 2012, designer Rossella Jardini further developed the theme of the bullfighter–though this season it had more of a Western slant.

Matador hats were replaced by black cowboy hats strapped tightly around the models’ chins and worn low over the eyes, reminding us of the badass bad guy in a Western film. The clothes, however, remained truer to last season’s matador: ornate blazers in black, red and gold–some with Spanish embroidery–and fitted trousers. The trousers–or leggings, really–were color-blocked in a way that recalled both Mondrian and, what we can only guess is Moschino’s favorite decade, the 80s. Speaking of the 80s: Jardini is singlehandedly trying to bring back the fannypack, styling many of her looks with quilted coin purses and wallets worn on a chain at the waist. It’s a chic take on the 80s staple but we’re still not entirely sold on the idea.
