Michelle Obama’s Re-Election Campaign Wardrobe: Meet Her New Favorite Designers

Michelle Obama established herself as a fashion-forward First Lady back in 2008, wearing Michael Kors and Jason Wu with such frequency that nobody could deny they were among her favorites. But now that her hubby is up for reelection, Michelle has introduced us to a whole new batch of faves, many of whom are CFDA honorees and edgy, young wunderkinds.

This year alone, we’ve seen Michelle step out in up-and-coming labels like Preen, Band of Outsiders, Wes Gordon and Lyn Devon–and she’s also been giving love to more established brands like Balenciaga, Peter Som and Sonia Rykiel that were previously absent (or at least very rare) from her wardrobe in past years. But don’t worry – even though MObama’s cool factor has increased like, fivefold this year alone, she’s still maintained loyalties with more classic, well-established labels like Michael Kors, Talbots and J. Crew, who we believe to be responsible for the green and yellow colorblocked number she wore in late June.

When Hollywood and the White House Collide
Red Carpet

When Hollywood and the White House Collide

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which took place Saturday night in DC, always makes for an interesting red carpet. The event is a strange mix of politicians, New York’s media power players, and celebrities from the A list on down to the D list. We’re talking President Obama and Kim Kardashian in the same room (“Why is she famous anyway?” Obama joked during his speech). And that makes for some very interesting fashion.

Take a look. And watch President Obama’s hilarious speech first. He’s so good.

Naeem Khan Fall 2011: A Hit With Glamour Girls of All Ages
Reviews

Naeem Khan Fall 2011: A Hit With Glamour Girls of All Ages

It’s pretty standard to do a cursory front-row scan upon taking your seat at a fashion show–you’re generally likely to spot at least one tertiary CW star, perhaps an America’s Next Top Model alum, and maybe (just maybe) an Olsen or Kardashian. But we stopped dead in our tracks upon glimpsing Iris Apfel sitting directly across from us at last night’s Naeem Khan show. Apfel’s pretty much the coolest 90-year-old style icon around, and true to fearless form, she was decked out in an entirely red ensemble accented, of course, with her signature oversized specs. Next to Apfel sat Ranjana Khan, Naeem’s lovely jewelry-designer wife, as well as noted couture client Becca Cason Thrash, whose appearance in the 2007 BBC doc The Secret World of Haute Couture (seriously, YouTube it ASAP if you haven’t witnessed the amazingness) left us following her every move.

It’s easy to see why Khan’s designs have carved out such a devoted fan club–these clothes are pretty much as luxe as one can find, short of shelling out for true couture. This particular collection featured several stunning numbers in multicolored paisley-print organza, cocktail looks edged with Far-East-inspired threadwork, and sheaths trimmed with fringe beading. Oh, but those were the more subtle looks.

Ten Questions For Project Runway

Ten Questions For Project Runway

1) The Mood dog’s name is Swatch? How come I didn’t know this earlier?

2) How on earth does Mondo afford all those wacky accessories and superhero boots on $12,000 per year? He must be an amazing thrifter.

3) Speaking of money, wasn’t it quite poignant listening to the designers describe their financial struggles? A shout-out to the CFDA and other organizations for lending a hand to struggling designers trying to live the dream.

4) Are there any professions other than modeling where you can legitimately ask, “Do you want me to take my bra off?”
