Fashion week came, and brought a feisty lil’ friend named Nemo along for the ride–forcing us to consider forgoing, “Well, doesn’t she look chic!” for, “Well, doesn’t she look warm?!” The runways begged to differ, offering up endless new ways to bundle-up beautifully for fall 2013. To use one of our new favorite phrases, Fashion Week is “many things.” Too many in fact, to capture in one blog post. But can we try? Day three is already here but we’re still poring over the hits and misses of day one. Here’s our take:
The Wigs at Gary Graham: We got his vision for the clothes. But the beauty notes lost us at hello. What were those wigs? No, seriously. What were they?
The Front Row at BCBG: Yet again, just as much to look at off the runway as a laundry list of “celebs” from Kelly Rowland to Jennifer Love Hewitt perched on the front row.

Swimwear at Norma Kamali: We are too delighted that Kamali showed on the runway to complain about anything. But if we did, it would be to ask how those unforgiving cut-outs would translate on real women.
Yesterday the fashion elite trudged through the snow, changed out of their snow boots and slipped into their four-inch heels, to attend the Fashion Group International’s 14th annual Rising Star Awards at Cipriani’s in midtown.
While Fashion Group International’s (FGI) annual celeb-saturated “Night of Stars” event tends to grab more column inches and flashbulbs, host Jamie Pallot, Condé Nast Digital’s editorial director, stressed the importance of “Rising Stars” for recognizing emerging talent that needs the exposure more than the established design stars feted on “Night of Stars.” But Norma Kamali, who gave the opening remarks, questioned stardom. “What happens if you don’t become a star?” she asked. “I never wanted to be a star…I’m just my own little constellation doing my thing and I love it a lot.”
Whether yesterday’s winners will become “stars” remains to be seen. But what is clear is that the winners and all the nominees in categories ranging from fine jewelry to interior design to men’s and women’s apparel are talented folks whose careers will hopefully benefit from their nods from FGI. The stars came in the way of presenters–Lauren Bush, Linda Fargo and Catherine Malandrino were all on hand to doll out awards.
So who took home a Rising Star award?
For the New Year, we’ll forgo resolutions about what we will do and focus instead on what others should. (Less personal responsibility always better.) Since we’re all for the welfare of this industry and the designers who fuel it, we’ve crafted a list of dream collaborations which could generate huge buzz and dollars. Or maybe not.
