Tom Ford Talks Criticism, Fashion Shows, and Getting Knocked Off By Zara
Kudos to Tom Ford for calling Zara out. We imagine most designers feel the same way.

Cedric Charlier only celebrated his 34th birthday days ago but he’s spent what seems like half of his life building up an impressive design resume.
He launched his eponymous collection just last year but he’s done stints at Celine (with Michael Kors), Lanvin, and most recently, Cacharel. We caught up with the designer yesterday to chat about what it’s like to be a young designer right now in Paris.
Today is Marc Jacobs’s 50th birthday, which is quite the milestone.
It wasn’t too hard to come up with 50 things we like about Marc Jacobs to commemorate his big day.
Nicholas Kirkwood is on a roll. This past January, he became the first accessories designer to pick up the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, beating out a slew of buzzy ready-to-wear designers like Mary Katrantzou and Peter Pilotto. And just today, the New York Post is crowning him the “new Manolo.”
But he never lets it go to his head. We caught up with Kirkwood during Paris fashion week to ask him about his big win, the possibility of handbags in the pipeline, and being a miserable fashion intern (he’s just like us!).
Many a preppy princess was sad to hear of the passing of Lilly Pulitzer. Her bright patterns have outfitted sorority girls for decades (and maybe, if she was lucky enough, her fraternity beau would sport a matching LP tie for formal).
We think Lilly Pulitzer was at her best during her 1960s and 1970s heyday, so we pulled some of our favorite vintage LP images and ads.
Take a look.
So in case you were wondering whether Marc Jacobs and 25-year-old porn star Harry Louis are still an item, it appears that they are.
While we’re not sure Roberto Cavalli, who designs outfits like this and says things like this, is really in a position to be calling someone else ridiculous, we guess he, himself, does dress pretty simply. If you consider shirts unbuttoned half way down, flared jeans and sunglasses “simple.”
He may not have been at Mugler very long but Nicola Formichetti sure did give us a lot to talk about in his two years as creative director of the brand. Lady Gaga walking the runway? Check. Kim Kardashian fashion makeover? Yep. A porn that doubled as a campaign film? He did that too.
There’s no doubt Formichetti created a lot of buzzy, memorable moments at Mugler. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights.
Fashion’s ever-revolving door spins again.
Edun, the label founded by Ali Hewson and hubby Bono in 2005, announced that their creative director of six seasons Sharon Wachoub is leaving the brand to focus on her eponymous line.
Naeem Khan is one of the very few designers who can say he’s dressed Michelle Obama—and Lady Gaga—for high profile events. There’s no doubt Khan excels at creating red carpet dresses for women of all shapes and sizes to wear—but make no mistake, there’s a lot more to the Indian-born, American-based designer than just intricate bead work (though, certainly, there is that too).
At last night’s Fashion Talks at the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF), Khan sat down with Pamela Golbin, the Chief Curator of Fashion and Textiles at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris, to talk about everything from his Indian roots, to working for Halston—and of course dressing the First Lady.
It’s been a season of second, third, and even fourth chances. After stints at Perry Ellis, Paco Rabanne, and Gap, designer Patrick Robinson is once again staging a comeback–this time, as creative director of Armani Exchange.
Currently waiting in the wings is former Dior designer John Galliano, who has been assisting in Oscar de la Renta’s atelier and is purportedly in talks to teach at Parsons.
We can’t say for sure whether either of these comebacks will take, but we can tell you about the returns other designers have staged in the past. Here are fashion’s greatest comeback stories:
Alber Elbaz sat down with Harper’s Bazaar‘s EIC Glenda Bailey yesterday at Hearst Tower for a “Master Class” session, where he discussed everything from his view on other designers to his own career path–and we got to sit in.
Elbaz weighed in on John Galliano’s possible return, as well as the controversy surrounding Céline allegedly ripping off his former mentor Geoffrey Beene.
