Fashion News Roundup: Vogue UK EIC Pens A Novel, Tracy Reese Talks Trayvon Martin Case, and Fashion People’s Tats

Tracy Reese Weighs in on the Trayvon Martin Case: Like most of the country, the designer is outraged at the shooting of the innocent, unarmed teenage boy. She talked to Huffington Post’s Black Voices about the matter, articulating her views on the troubling assumption in our society that People of Color are always up to no good:” The whole thing is just so sad, and the excuses are so lame… White people wear hoodies too,” she said. “It’s so sad that people want to be in fear of you just because you’re a young man of color.” Couldn’t have said it better, Ms. Reese. {Huffington Post}

Vogue UK Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Shulman Releases Her First Novel: It seems every writer, journalist, or editor has a secret dream of publishing a novel, and we’re happy to see that Alexandra Shulman is one of the few who have made it a reality. Can We Still be Friends, is the story of three friends fresh from college, trying to figure out post grad life in Eighties London. Expect the novel in stores April 19. {Vogue UK}

Fashion People Show off Their Tats: Refinery 29 rounded up a group of fashion notables (including jewelry designer Pamela Love and our very own Hayley Phelan) tell us the stories behind their ink. {Refinery 29}

Chanel Has Decided Not To Sell Those Cuffs That Look Like Pamela Love’s ‘Out of Respect…For the Artistic Process’

Yesterday we posted an Adventures in Copyright which pointed out that the crystal cuffs from Chanel’s fall show looked a lot like some Pamela Love made last year as part of her fall 2011 collection. We reached out to both Chanel and Pamela Love for comment and while Pamela Love chose not to comment, Chanel Read more →

Adventures in Copyright: How Much Does Karl Lagerfeld Love Pamela Love?

Julie Zerbo at The Fashion Law tipped us off to this little Adventures in Copyright involving–gasp!–Chanel. She points out that the crystal cuffs from Chanel’s crystalline fall 2012 show look a lot like some crystal cuffs that Pamela Love already makes. And she’s right, Chanel’s cuffs look strikingly similar to Love’s. Love’s crystal cuffs are Read more →

Pamela Love Fall 2012: The Jewelry Factory

Pamela Love Fall 2012: The Jewelry Factory

Walking into Pamela Love‘s dimly lit presentation at MADE, it was clear the designer was going for a grittier vibe than seasons past: A copper metal structure which resembled part of a boiler room or furnace served as a backdrop, emitting ominous puffs of smoke, while the models, dressed in workwear-inspired gear, faces smudged with “dirt” stood on a podium staring steely-eyed at the audience.

But not even the models’ dirty faces nor the dark setting could dim Love’s strong, sculptural jewelry collection, which subtly referenced industrial beams, and factory architecture. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Pamela Love collection without a generous helping of earthy elements like turquoise stones and tribal-inspired patterns hammered into segments of of necklaces, earrings and bracelets.

30 Never Looked So Good: Forbes lists the year’s standout names in Art & Design for their 30 under 30 series. Joseph Altuzarra, Chris Benz, Pamela Love, Alexander Wang and the Olsens are among those that made the cut. Get ready to start feeling very unaccomplished. {Forbes}

Bebe Says ‘I Do’: The mega retailer has ditched one reality TV star (Kim Kardahian) for another (Project Runway contestant Rami Kashou) in an attempt to revamp their brand into something a little more sophisticated. Rami will be designing the brand’s all-growed-up line of bridal wear, which she describes as “feminine, elegant, timeless and romantic.” {The Cut}

Pamela Love on Branching Out Beyond Jewelry and What She Did with her CFDA Money

Pamela Love on Branching Out Beyond Jewelry and What She Did with her CFDA Money

Last week I ran into Pamela Love at the launch party for her collaboration with Shopstyle, the encyclopedic shopping website. Love is Shopstyle’s first designer collaboration ever, and for the occasion she reimagined some of her classic pieces in rose gold and red resin, to be sold at a lower price point (because not everyone can afford $700 cuffs).

I got the chance to speak with Pamela about the collaboration, her CFDA win, and her best memories in her hometown in Florida, and lucky for me, her best friend from high school, Jen, was sitting right beside her to provide some comic relief and insight.

Breaking: Joseph Altuzarra Wins CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund; Pamela Love and Creatures of the Wind Named Runners Up

Joseph Altuzarra has been named this year’s winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. Altuzarra, an industry darling since he burst onto the scene in 2009, will take home $300,000 to put towards growing his business. Altuzarra was nominated for the award last year, and was nominated for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear in 2010 and 2011.

New York-based Jewelry designer Pamela Love and relative newcomers from Chicago, Shane Gabier and Chris Peters of Creatures of the Wind (one of our personal faves–congrats guys!), were named runners up.
