Fashion week came, and brought a feisty lil’ friend named Nemo along for the ride–forcing us to consider forgoing, “Well, doesn’t she look chic!” for, “Well, doesn’t she look warm?!” The runways begged to differ, offering up endless new ways to bundle-up beautifully for fall 2013. There were common motifs parading through the shows Saturday–and we don’t just mean the superluxe fur mittens spotted on the glamazons at both Alexander Wang and Altuzarra. On a hellaciously cold day in New York, the most buzzed about shows were those filled with looks editors wished could march right off the runway.
At a time when most of America is just getting to know Prabal Gurung’s signature prints by way of his sure-to-sell-out Target collection, the designer seemed keen to showcase a different, stricter, more somber side of himself for Fall 2013.
This season, Gurung’s woman exuded power and control.
It’s become the norm that after a launch party for a designer collaboration, pieces available at the “pre-shop” end up on eBay within hours. The Prabal Gurung collection for Target, set to hit stores on February 10, is no exception.
Sometimes it can feel like there’s no group more jaded than the fashion pack. But when you turn Pier 57 into an indoor carnival, complete with rides, games, and food trucks–like they did last night for the Prabal Gurung for Target launch party–well, it’s pretty hard to feign boredom.
Prabal Gurung’s seen so many succesful milestones in his career (dressing the First Lady, being named a runner-up for the 2010 CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund, an upcoming Target collaboration) it’s hard to believe the designer only started his label in February 2009. But he’s staying humble. “I have a long, long way to go,” he told the crowd at the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation brunch Wednesday. “This is just the beginning. I want to be around for a long time.” And we’re sure he will be.
Still, if Gurung ever wants to make a career change, he could do a bang-up job as a motivational speaker.
Pre-Fall 2013 has wrapped!…or has it?…Nobody can quite say for sure, but with the Fall 2013 shows quickly approaching in mid-February, we figured now was as good a time as any to take inventory of our favorites from “the season between seasons.”
