Four cities, one season: Fall 2013. Nemo kicked the collections off and every city to follow added its own dose of wintry chill. Somehow all that cold weather caused a discernible note of restraint to float through the collections. Don’t worry–the passion and excitement were still there, but designers actively pursued defining new ways we can really dress next fall. These looks felt grounded in the return of the “Lady,” as fashion’s pendulum swung away from the risqué, toward the refreshingly refined (spike-studded shoulders be damned). “I had a real specific character in mind this season,” Rachel Comey said of the girl who inspired her fall 2013 collection. “She’s got some information and you don’t know what it is but you want to find out.” Comey‘s spy girl, as it were, must go incognito, hence the striking pixie wigs worn by every model (props to the styling team at Bumble and bumble). So it follows that dressing up is also part of the job.

The invites often give you an idea of what to expect from the show, too. This season, we’ve seen neon, translucent pink rubber; holographic birds; and used Petri dishes (yes–really).

As usual with Rachel Comey, I had to keep reminding myself to look up and stop staring at the shoes. Because they are always so good. This season Comey’s classic clogs and flats had colorful metallic sheens. The clothes were shinier and more dressed up too: There were party dresses with beaded embellishments and even sequins–a loud statement for the normally subdued and down-to-earth Comey girl. But those breezy staples were there too in the way of airy white shirt dresses, simple silk sheathes with a ruffle or two, and quilted floral printed separates.
