Michelle Obama’s Re-Election Campaign Wardrobe: Meet Her New Favorite Designers

Michelle Obama established herself as a fashion-forward First Lady back in 2008, wearing Michael Kors and Jason Wu with such frequency that nobody could deny they were among her favorites. But now that her hubby is up for reelection, Michelle has introduced us to a whole new batch of faves, many of whom are CFDA honorees and edgy, young wunderkinds.

This year alone, we’ve seen Michelle step out in up-and-coming labels like Preen, Band of Outsiders, Wes Gordon and Lyn Devon–and she’s also been giving love to more established brands like Balenciaga, Peter Som and Sonia Rykiel that were previously absent (or at least very rare) from her wardrobe in past years. But don’t worry – even though MObama’s cool factor has increased like, fivefold this year alone, she’s still maintained loyalties with more classic, well-established labels like Michael Kors, Talbots and J. Crew, who we believe to be responsible for the green and yellow colorblocked number she wore in late June.

And the CFDA Award Winners Are…

And the CFDA Award Winners Are…

The fashion Oscars CFDA awards have wrapped: The Olsens took home the big prize for womenswear for the Row (they very adorably thanked each other); Seth Meyers wore Marc Jacobs’ Met ball outfit (and dared to make a Galliano joke); Garance Dore had folks tearing up when she accepted her award by telling the audience to “take your fun very seriously…[and] maybe one day you will start a revolution”; and John Waters proved the perfect person to pick up awards for both Comme des Garçons‘ Rei Kawakubo (“I wear Comme des Garcons to be fashionable in private…We know how great her clothes look but others just think we’re poor”) and Johnny Depp (“He has fashion balls…he was a pirate Pepe Le Pew way before I met him”). And the industry recognized its finest talents this year.

Without further ado, the 2012 CFDA award winners:

Giorgio Armani, who will turn 78 in July, is reportedly creating a foundation that will ensure total control over the future of his brand. It all sounds very secretive and James Bond-esque, and of course, Armani reps won’t comment. {WWD}

Here’s one sure-fire way to brighten your Monday: J.Crew’s colorful collaboration with CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runners up Creatures of the Wind launches today. {SheFinds}

Opening Ceremony will debut a magazine this August called OC Annual. Each issue will be built around a theme, and first up is (what else?) the London 2012 Olympics. {Refinery29}

12 Spring Ad Campaigns Improved by Cats

As any avid reader of this site should know by now, we really like cats. And luckily, so does the fashion industry as a whole, it seems, because fashion and cats have come together so many times that we actually have a category devoted to this union. Unfortunately, they just don’t put enough cats into ad campaigns, so sometimes, like one other time, we have to do it for them.

In honor of the first day of spring, we present 12 spring ad campaigns improved by cats. Click through to enjoy.

Happy spring!

Reed Krakoff: A-List Favorite

Reed Krakoff may only be in his fourth season, but the designer already has a steady stable of A-list fans from Anna Wintour to Emmanuelle Alt to Julianne Moore–all of whom, of course, were in attendance for his Fall 2012 show.

“Oh I love him,” Moore told us. “We’ve been friends for a really long time, since like ’98. I love his aesthetic. I love what he did at Coach, and I love what he’s doing at his own brand.”

“He has a real style–always beautiful fabric, great lines,” she added. “His stuff is always very chic.”

Reed Krakoff Spring 2012: Simple Cellophane

Reed Krakoff Spring 2012: Simple Cellophane

The runway at the Reed Krakoff show was a circuitous maze in an all-white room, through which models had to walk a complicated route, often crossing paths and barely avoiding collisions. But the clothes they wore weren’t complicated. Minimalistic ease was represented to maximum effect.

The season’s fave new colors (yellow and orange) were in abundance, anchored by pieces in nude, black and white. Many dresses had a drop waist, as did jackets shown over skirts. A bit Prada fall 2011? Maybe, but that’s where the similarity ended.

Highlights From Parsons’ Graduate Show

“Watching this show makes me think I could use a few more years in school,” said Reed Krakoff at the Parsons 2011 BFA fashion show. Krakoff, a Parsons alum and the executive creative director of Coach as well as his eponymous line, addressed the crowd of students, parents, press and faculty halfway through the show, saluting his teachers and spotlighting Parsons as the cradle of talent for the fashion industry. Krakoff’s comments were echoed in a video featuring some of the school’s other prominent alumni, including Prabal Gurung, Donna Karan, and Anna Sui.
