Fashion week came, and brought a feisty lil’ friend named Nemo along for the ride–forcing us to consider forgoing, “Well, doesn’t she look chic!” for, “Well, doesn’t she look warm?!” The runways begged to differ, offering up endless new ways to bundle-up beautifully for fall 2013. The last two days have been pretty colorful backstage. From Chloe Norgaard’s neon hair and tons of statement lips everywhere, it’s been pretty fun to look at. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of wearable inspiration too, in the form of Kate Moss hair and dewy skin.

When almost every designer seems to be referencing Céline and Balenciaga, it’s nice that you can always count on Kate and Laura Mulleavy to do something completely different for Rodarte. These sisters truly march to the beat of their own drum. That means I don’t always “get it”–like their spring 2012 Van Gogh “Starry Night collection” or some of this season’s sheer ruffled dresses that just seemed plain impractical. But I appreciate that they’re doing their own thing.
The light at the end of the tunnel is near as we power through day seven of New York Fashion Week. Or maybe we’re just still thinking about the fluorescent lights at Rodarte’s show this afternoon?
Either way, fashion week is almost over, so we’ve been snap-happy trying to take in all of its goodness before it’s too late.
Here’s what we saw today.
Most people remember the leather leggings from Rodarte’s last show. Not me. I remember covertly pressing the show notes into my right knee, desperately trying to stop the bleeding. Let me explain:
The invites have been sent out, the seating charts are being filled, and fashion folks everywhere are resoling their Manolos (and setting their DVRs–can’t miss Girls!): Fashion week is upon us!
Inaugural style went beyond just one gown: from the First Family to the celebrities, everyone brought their A-game to D.C. this weekend.
Perry chose to give a little r-e-s-p-e-c-t to Aretha Franklin, who famously sang at Obama’s first Inauguration back in 2009. She tweeted the above picture and said, “Big inauguration, tiny Aretha hat.”
Not one but two ‘fashion hackathons’–one hosted by the CFDA and IMG and the other by Hearst–will take place during this coming New York fashion week. This news is pretty surprising when you consider that most fashion people probably don’t even know what a hackathon is.
To explain what a hackathon is, why it’s happening during New York fashion week, and what this means for the industry, we spoke with Liz Bacelar, founder of Decoded Fashion, an organization that creates events dedicated to bringing fashion and tech together. Bacelar, along with former Lincoln Center fashion director (and, before that, director of special events at Vogue) Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, made the CFDA/IMG fashion hackathon (an official part of NYFW) happen.
What would fashion be if Nicolas Ghesquiere had never come around? Probably pretty different considering his work for Balenciaga has influenced just about everyone, some more directly than others.
We feel like an entire “adventures in copyright” blog could be dedicated to copies of his work. Oh wait, that exists.
We already knew how influential he was, but seeing that visually, all in one place is pretty incredible.
Rodarte for Opening Ceremony? Obviously. Rodarte for Black Swan? Why not. Rodarte for Target? Sure. Gotta make money somehow. Rodarte for Starbucks? Umm…what?
