Inès de la Fressange on Roger Vivier and Why the Word ‘Sexy’ Has Been ‘Ruining Fashion for 20 Years’

Roger Vivier–the brand credited with inventing the stiletto–has a long and rich history, all documented in the new Rizzoli tome Roger Vivier.

To celebrate the release of the book, head designer Bruno Frisoni and brand ambassador Inès de la Fressange sat down with FIT‘s fashion historian Valerie Steele Wednesday evening to chat about the history of Roger Vivier and Frisoni’s own creations for the brand.

Kids Now Have Even More Designer Options for the Playground: Roger Vivier Jeune Fille, the shoe designer’s children’s line, will hit stores in March, to the tune of $312 for ballerina flats. Proceeds from sales of the line will go to charity. And if you need an outfit to go with those shoes, jet on over to Milan, where Versace’s first kids’ boutique, Young Versace, just opened. There’s a merry-go-round! {WWD, subscription required}

Karlie Kloss Is PINK: The model made her debut on the Victoria’s Secret fashion show runway this year. Now take a peek at her modeling the brand’s colorful and bedazzled undies and sweats. {Styleite}

Does J. Crew Have a New Boss?: Apparently someone shopping in the Tribeca J.Crew store overheard an employee say that Bruce Springsteen’s people had called asking to set aside a pair of Wallace & Barnes “Made in the USA” jeans in dark indigo for the denim-loving singer. Wonder if he can still fill out his jeans the way he did back in the “Born in the USA” days. {New York Daily News}

Britney’s Engagement Ring Has 90 diamonds and Looks Like a Crown: Aw, pretty. Neil Lane, designer of Brit’s latest engagement ring, told People that he designed the ring with a tiara motif because Jason Trawick calls the pop princess a…princess. {People}

Leighton Meester Talks Fashion and Life After Gossip Girl (She Wants to Garden) at Roger Vivier’s Cocktail Party

Last night storied French footwear label Roger Vivier threw a cocktail party at their Upper East side store to celebrate their fall winter “Uptown-Downtown” collection as well as limited edition collection “Rendez-Vous.” Creative director Bruno Frisoni’s creations for the brand–particularly the “Rendez-Vous” collection which he described as “Rock! Think Keith Richards”–nearly outshone all the fashion starlets who turned out to sip champagne and shoe-drool. Leighton Meester was there, and so were industry darlings Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Marie Amelie Sauve, Hamish Bowles, Hanne Gabe Odiele, Emily Weiss and Leandra Medine. Plus Alexandra Richards was DJing. Needless to say, it was a very chic event.

We caught Meester, who looked lovely in sequined J.Mendel, Vivier accessories and Bulgari jewels, staring distractedly at some studded Vivier boots so we seized the moment to check in with the Gossip Girl star.

Apparently, Recessions Make Rich People Want to Spend More: Here Are 10 Handbags That Cost Five-Figures

With recessions and economic uncertainty plaguing retail all over the world, you would think products like $39,000 handbags wouldn’t do so well, right? Wrong. Apparently, the luxury market has been doing so well it’s spawned a new market: hyper-luxury.

Instead of tightening their belts, wealthy shoppers are just raising their standards, according to WWD. People want to invest (if you can call it that) in extra special things, even if that special touch, whether it’s an exotic skin or customization, makes the item that much more expensive. And designers like Fendi, Tom Ford and Victoria Beckham are more than happy to cater to those people.

Alber Elbaz puts it nicely: “If a handbag is the price of a house,” he says, “the customer wants to make sure she’s the only one who’s got it.”

Are these things expensive enough for you, luxury customers?

The Comeback of Inès de la Fressange: The Icon on the Fate of Luxury Brands, Working With Roger Vivier, and Galliano’s Downfall

In the ’80s Inès de la Fressange reigned as the most super of the supermodels. Muse to Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel throughout the decade (until the two had a falling out in 1989) she was, according to the WSJ, the first model to sign an exclusive modeling contract with the house, and later went on to serve as the model for Marianne, the symbol of France.

Today, at 53, de la Fressange is back. She signed on as the brand ambassador for Roger Vivier when the label was revived eight years ago after being acquired by Diego Della Valle and Tod’s group, marked the end of her feud with Lagerfeld by walking at the Chanel spring 2011 show, and just yesterday it was announced that she is the new face of L’Oreal Paris. “I believe in the slogan ‘Because we’re worth it!’” she said in a statement for L’Oreal, “I love those words, which are still perfectly relevant today.”

We got the chance to talk with the legendary model over Paris Fashion Week at Roger Vivier’s presentation about her work for Vivier, her thoughts on the state of fashion and luxury today, her reaction to Galliano’s ousting from Dior, and why she doesn’t like to go to runway shows.
