Sarah Burton has been awarded an OBE, or The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire honor, for services to the fashion industry–and for designing the wedding dress of a certain bride-to-be, Kate Middleton. Perhaps you’ve heard of her?
During the Buckingham Palace ceremony, where Burton received the prestigious award, the designer (who is pregnant with twins) dished on how that royal wedding dress commission came about and if she’ll be designing maternity wear for Kate Middleton. Read on.
Kate Middleton may have worn a custom Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding gown to marry Prince William, but she’s a commoner at heart. She’s not afraid to shop at Zara frequently, nor is she afraid to wear her purchases over and over again. Just like, you know, most women do. We’re not so naive Read more →
The UK celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee in London this past weekend with a huge flotilla on the Thames. The Royals and commoners alike came out in full force (more on that later), but our eye was immediately drawn to one brilliant scarlet bird–the lovely Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. As she’s proven on several occasions, Read more →
Looks like there is a limit to Kate Middleton’s sartorial power after all. Considering the fact that the Duchess’ Sarah Burton-designed wedding dress drew a record-breaking number of visitors to the Buckingham Palace last year, and that it managed to launch a handful of knockoffs, we would have thought the famous gown would be a Read more →
Each year Time releases its list of the 100 most influential people in the world, including a wide range of individuals–from CEOs and politicians to pop stars and scientists–and needless to say it’s kind of a big deal if you make the cut.
Last year, Tom Ford was the only fashion industry player to get a nod, but happily this year’s list has a few more fashion peeps on it. Also happily, they’re all women.
This year’s list is also different because Time enlisted the help of notables like Sarah Jessica Parker, Katie Couric and Stella McCartney to actually write the blurb on each honoree.

The results from the British Fashion Awards are in and while there are a lot of familiar names in the winners’ circle, there are some surprises, too. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen won for Designer of the Year (deservedly so). Alexa Chung took home the British Style award, which normally wouldn’t be so shocking–except this year she was up against Kate Middleton *gasp*. The Model category, made up of industry vets and a relative newcover, was a bit of a wild card. Stella Tennant, looking amazing in a skinny tuxedo, beat out Georgia May Jagger and Kristen McMenamy. Victoria Beckham, now a bona fide fashion designer, had some stiff competition with Burberry, Stella McCartney and Tom Ford for Designer Brand, but she won. Quite an achievement for a former pleather-wearing Spice Girl. Click through for a full list of winners:
The amount of work that happens backstage before a fashion show is staggering, but it’s often hard to get a sense of that in what seems like disorganized chaos. This new film by Sean Frank gives you an intimate look at the scene backstage at the McQueen spring 2012 show as Sarah Burton and her Read more →
Sarah Burton’s coming out of her shell a bit and has given a few really charming and revealing interviews recently. She has profiles in both the Telegraph and on Hong Kong luxury department store Lane Crawford‘s website. She speaks candidly about designing Kate Middleton’s wedding gown (and why she almost turned the job down) and how Alexander McQueen found inspiration in the most unlikely of places.
Here are the best bits from the two articles:
After all the hub-bub over the royal wedding–and particularly, the wedding dress–we were sure we’d see a slew of Middleton-inspired looks this bridal season. But according to the Wall Street Journal, “bridal experts played down any Kate Middleton effect.”
Although Middleton’s gown attracted over 600,000 visitors when on display at the Buckingham palace, it hasn’t been as big a hit for civilian brides. “Other designers copied [Middleton's gown] and had it on the runway right away, but what we noticed though, is that nobody bought it,” designer Gregory Nato of Fancy New York bridal, told the Journal.
Indeed, bridal heavy-hitters like Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier and Carolina Herrera showed almost exclusively bare-armed looks and many of the silhouettes bore only a vague (if any) resemblance to the famous Sarah Burton for McQueen dress. However there was a familiar silhouette, perhaps thanks to another royal wedding of sorts: that mermaid/trumpet style Kim Kardashian chose for her big day was everywhere–on the runways of Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta and Monique Lhuillier. Could Kim K really have more selling power than Kate Middleton when it comes to wedding dresses? Hmm….
