The 3 Most Buzzed About Shows From Day 5

It’s an unwritten rule of the fashion week grid the past couple seasons that Monday is officially unofficially Marc Jacobs Day. So. When it comes to identifying today’s critically best-received show, there’s that, even without Eric Wilson declaring Jacobs’ focus on barely bare midriffs a bonafide Bumsters moment. However, the CFDA womenswear winners Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s long, lightly layered silhouette and Olivier Theyskens’ subversion of great-fitting work pants seemed also to be theories of design the critics could support.

The Best Shoes of the Fall 2012 Season

We’ve scoured the Fall 2012 collections for the most amazing shoes, and it was easy, because there were plenty. The best part? Footwear options for Fall 2012 are a lot more reasonable than their Spring 2012 counterparts. (Remember those 6 inch Versace lucite wedges?)

Fall 2012 saw lots of wide heels and mary-janes on the runway, and sometimes both simultaneously–like at Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Marni. Knee-high black boots ruled at Alexander Wang, Altuzarra, Givenchy, and Rick Owens, and ladylike pumps could be found at Lanvin, Nina Ricci, and Jil Sander. Of course, if you’re looking for something crazy, look no further than Alexander McQueen’s heel-less fur shoes. Impractical, but so lovely.

Take a look at all the amazing shoes from Fall 2012 and just try to pick a favorite. It’s near impossible.

Best Dressed: Golden Globes (Plus the Best Fashion Tweets About Each Look)

The Golden Globes, the first major red carpet event of awards season, has just wrapped. For the most part (save Piper Perabo, Sarah Michelle Geller and Tilda Swinton of course–we salute you girls!), celebrities played it safe in shimmering blush and champagne colored columns. Of course, safe doesn’t mean not pretty (see: Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace) and black doesn’t mean boring (see Rooney Mara in Nina Ricci).

Click through for our picks for best dressed at the Golden Globes accompanied by our favorite tweets from fashion folks (see: Robin Givhan, “charlize theron in Dior Couture looking fabulous. who needs a creative director?”).

The Best of Pre-Fall 2012

While spring and fall seasons may give us more to to ooh and ahh over, pre-collections often present more of what we actually want to wear. It makes sense, since everyone says the in-between seasons are the most important for retailers. And these designers have succeeded in making things we already want to buy, desperately. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until early summer (“pre-fall” is a bit misnomer) to do so. Click through for what we feel were the 10 most drool-worthy collections so far.

Street Style Fodder from the Spring 2012 Collections

Every season, we notice a few key designer items that populate street style blogs more consistently than others. They’re those must-have, eye-catching pieces that end up on waiting lists because editors and other girls about town snatch them up first (probably on Moda Operandi, long before they hit stores). And then we see them on street style sites on the backs of people like Anna Dello Russo and Carine Roitfeld and Emmanuelle Alt. Lately, it’s been Isabel Marant jeans, Celine everything, Miu Miu booties. But what will it be next spring?

We’ve taken another look at the spring 2012 collections to predict what we think will be catching the eyes of Scott, Tommy, Phil et al come February. Or, alternately, here is what we think those of you hoping to end up on a street style site, should wear.

Fashion House Musical Chairs: A Visual Guide
Fashion Is Fun

Fashion House Musical Chairs: A Visual Guide

Usually, it’s editorial shakeups that get us all confused and inspire us to create befuddling charts and guides to recap and (at least attempt to) make sense of movement within the fashion industry. Lately, however, it seems that most of the movement is taking place at big fashion houses. Whether it’s the economy or designers getting burnt-out, it seems like a top level position opens (or gets filled) every week.

From Galliano’s exit from Dior to Marios Schwab’s from Halston (which happened so recently we didn’t have a chance to include it), here’s our little visual guide to the recent ins and outs at major fashion houses.

Olivier Theyskens Explains How Andrew Rosen Convinced Him To Join Theory Over Croissants at the French Embassy

Full disclosure: not all of us chose to pull all-nighters watching the royal nuptials. Why? This morning, we were invited to the Cultural Services of the French Embassy for their first “Breakfast at 972″ panel discussion. Their inaugural guest of honor was none other than Olivier TheyskensTheory’s Artistic Director, former designer at Rochas and Nina Ricci, and a longtime Fashionista favorite.

After enjoying coffee and croissants in the main atrium of the gorgeous Fifth Avenue mansion, a small group of (insanely chic, primarily French) guests were ushered in for an intimate chat moderated by Charlotte Sarkozy and Timothée Verrecchia. Theyskens looked totally dapper in a slouchy white Bottega Veneta blazer and a pair of vintage, denim-like trousers he later told us he bought “because they reminded me of the pants the fish vendors at the Les Halles marketplace in Paris wear.” Even for a designer with a famously romantic aesthetic, it seems like simplicity is key.

Some of the morning’s key points:

Fashion News Roundup: Dov Charney Wants to be Like Hugh Hefner, Dita Von Teese Designs Lingerie, and J.Crew is Opening Across the Pond

Dov Charney Wants to Recreate Hugh Hefner’s Lifestyle Circa 1970: The New York Times‘ piece on Charney is full of interesting tidbits. Ilse Metchek, president of the California Fashion Association and friend of Charney, says that the controversial CEO of American Apparel’s 20-room home is like a “dormitory.” On his front yard? A sculpture of a hand giving the middle finger. How fitting. {NY Times}

The World’s Most Expensive Shoe: Your Louboutins got nothing on these solid gold heels that are encrusted with 2,000 diamonds. The shoe, created by jewelry designer Michael Shellis, are going for a little over $200,000. {Telegraph}

J.Crew is Heading Overseas: The all-American brand plans to open shop in the UK at the end of the summer. {Elle UK}

Models as Mannequins: In the catalog of the upcoming exhibit, “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” at the Met, the photographs of white mannequins in the designer’s creations are actually…real live models. Photographer Solve Sundsbo was able to create the illusion thanks to Photoshop, makeup, and lighting. {Racked}
