Every single piece of Michelle Obama’s extensive inauguration weekend wardrobe has been thoroughly scrutinized, but there’s one item in particular that’s gotten everyone extra fired up: The J. Crew Valentina belt the First Lady added over her Thom Browne coat.
The men’s shows are ovah and it’s on to the spring couture shows. We had our contributor Long Nguyen, co-founder and style director of Flaunt, front row taking it all in. Here are his reports from the menswear shows at Lanvin, Comme des Garçons, Dior Homme, and the man of the hour, Thom Browne.

Michelle Obama has worn Thom Browne before, but as Thom Browne is a relatively obscure and fashion forward designer (Savannah Guthrie admitted on TODAY that she’d never heard of him), fashion peeps (us included) are already fired up about her fashion choice.
Who’s in the running towards becoming America’s Next Inauguration Designer?
We won’t know for sure what Michelle Obama will wear to the inaugural balls until Monday (unless someone who doesn’t value their job decides to spill the beans), but WWD‘s got the scoop on which designers have fielded sample requests from the White House.
No one on the list is particularly surprising.
The CFDA team has been pretty busy lately. Tuesday night was the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund event and last night, they feted a huge Sandy relief sale, which is open to the public today until 8pm. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Diane von Furstenberg, Anna Wintour, Steven Kolb, and Tory Burch were in attendance.
Even before arranging the sale, the CFDA put together an online auction, through which you can bid on things like a week long stay at Diane von Furstenberg’s Harbor Island home, lunch with Gwyneth Paltrow and Mario Batali, and attending a fashion show with Anna Wintour and the Vogue editors.
Today’s sale came together pretty serendipitously.
That’s it. Last night marked the third and final presidential debate. Which, for us, means it’s our last chance to compare and analyze Michelle Obama and Ann Romney‘s outfits as if they were in a show down.
But if the President won last night’s debate it’s harder to declare a sartorial winner between the wives.
Well, that was fast. New York Fashion Week has come and gone and after going to all shows and parties, showing you our notes, assessing the trends, and stalking the celebrities, we’ve taken whatever amount of sanity and brain power we have left to take a look back at all the spring clothes and pick our 10 favorite collections.
Fashion week is approaching the end, but we’re not slowing down anytime soon. We checked out Thom Browne‘s crazy presentation, Zero + Maria Cornejo‘s sporty neoprene pieces, and Elie Tahari‘s vibrant spring collection.
The entire show consisted of WTF moments… and we loved every minute of it.

The FLOTUS looked absolutely stunning once again last night on the last day of the Democratic National Convention. While her husband took the podium, she wore a well-tailored burgundy floral-printed dress by up-and-coming African-American designer Laura Smalls with an Alexis Bittar flower pin on her lapel.
Smalls is staging a small fashion week presentation on Tuesday and we bet her PR just got a lot more RSVPs.
