Tommy Hilfiger Admits to Still Using Unsafe Factories, Commits $1 Million to Improving Safety Standards

Tommy Hilfiger Admits to Still Using Unsafe Factories, Commits $1 Million to Improving Safety Standards

A little over a year ago, 29 workers were trapped in a fire and died tragically in a Bangladesh garment factory that produces goods for Tommy Hilfiger, Gap and Kohl’s, among other companies. And despite the fact that (according to labor groups) dangerous conditions including locked gates and bad wiring have persisted, and workers have continued to die, each of those companies has continued to do business with these dangerous factories, according to a new investigation by ABC’s Brian Ross.

Ross reports that since the fire, officials from PVH Corp. (the company that produces Hilfiger’s clothes), Gap and Kohl’s would not agree to repeated requests for interviews. So, in Februrary, ABC spoke to Hilfiger at his show during fashion week, where he told reporters, “We will never manufacture clothes in any of those factories ever again.” ABC was then kicked out of the venue by security and it turned out what Hilfiger had said was a lie. A few days later, Hilfiger admitted, “I did make a mistake in telling you that I would imagine we’d be pulling out of Bangladesh when in fact that wasn’t true.”

So why is he still using those hazardous factories to produce his preppy staples?

Tommy Hilfiger Addresses Those Racist Rumors From 1996 One More Time

Tommy Hilfiger Addresses Those Racist Rumors From 1996 One More Time

Have you heard the rumor that Tommy Hilfiger doesn’t want minorities wearing his clothes?

It’s an old one. It started around 1996 via an email boycott campaign and went something like this: Hilfiger allegedly said something along the lines of that if he had known minorities were going to wear his clothes he wouldn’t have made them “so nice” and that he wished they wouldn’t wear them; then he went on Oprah and stood by those statements. Of course, none of it is true. He had never even been on Oprah when the rumors started.

Hilfiger did eventually go on Oprah in 2007 to put the rumors to bed. And last week, as the featured guest in the latest installment of Fern Mallis’ 92Y Fashion Icons’ series, he talked about them yet again, according to WWD:

Holland’s Next Top Model Winner Wins Lawsuit Against ELITE Models: Well, here’s some good news: Ananda Marchildon, who was dropped from ELITE Model Management for being “too hippy,” just won a lawsuit against the agency. ELITE dropped Marchildon after she failed to get her hip width down two centimeters to the preferred 90cm. They withheld a chunk of her Top Model winnings, awarding her only $13,000 out of the $98,500 she was promised. An Amsterdam court ruled that since Marchildon was signed to the agency with her enormous 92cm hips, “Elite could therefore not demand she reach a hip size of 90 centimeters.” ELITE has been ordered to pay her the $85,000 she is due. Justice is served! {OMG! Yahoo!}

Madonna Barely Wears Agent Provocateur on New Single Cover: Along with her droves of loyal fans, Madonna can now count lingerie brand Agent Provocateur as one of her biggest supporters – in the extremely literal sense. No denying that Madge looks gooood on her “Girls Gone Wild” single cover, but we’ve just one caveat: While it’s no secret that some things go south with age, it seems Madonna’s nips have full-on vanished. Life is a mystery… {Telegraph}

Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2012: The King of Prep Reinvention

If you closed your eyes and wished for a dream fashion show, that’s what Tommy Hilfiger‘s women’s fall/winter collection was: a hushed fairyland of imported gray gravel, autumn ripe trees and a confidence you could feel upon entering the Park Avenue Armory.

It wasn’t only the sumptuous offerings for fall—precise military detailing, lush textures and literal equestrian accents in rich navy, caramel and the season’s most-pervasive hue, burgundy—it was the tasteful spectacle that was so moving. From the cavernous space to the soundtrack (Lana Del Rey and The Beatles for Hilfiger’s bow), the presentation felt like a veteran designer’s willing acquiescence to a new guard.

Fashion Industry Insiders Dish: My Most Embarrassing Fashion Week Moment

Here’s the thing about fashion week: it’s ripe for embarrassing moments. Why? Everyone gets dressed to the nines, wears their highest heels, and is so worried about how they look, and how everyone else thinks they look, that when something goes awry cheeks instantly go bright red. And it doesn’t help that everyone is looking down at their phones when they should be looking at the rope of wires that’s about to trip them. We’ve spent the last few days poling everyone from editors to stylists to designers for their most embarrassing moments. And they really are embarrassing. Read about Simon Doonan having his fly unzipped at a very inopportune time, Jenna Lyons getting moved from her front row seat, Betsey Johnson’s g-string slip, and many, many , more. Remember YM? Consider this the “Say Anything” for the fashion industry.

That’s The Ticket: A Look at the Coolest New York Fashion Week Invites

If you’ve watched Bridezillas, you know it’s difficult to plan a wedding. Every detail is mulled over ad nauseam: the music, decor, seating arrangements, the dress, and, of course, the invitations.

Fashion Week is kind of the same way. Design houses are in a frenzy, burning Lana Del Rey MP3s, obsessing over the set design, sitting in on model castings, making sure the most prominent editors get choice seating, and sending out creative invites to garner excitement (rather than panic attacks) over the several shows they will have to sit through and ultimately, report on.

Just as every bride wants her invitations to capture the essence of her wedding, designers are behooved to get a little creative with their invites. To show you how funky some brands get, we’ve compiled the most interesting invites we’ve received. From embossed flasks to digital picture frames, click through for the fashion show invitations that got us most excited.

“Shit OscarPRGirl Says” Will Make You LOL: We get it, everyone’s really effing sick of all those “Shit [blank] Say” parodies. But just trust us (and WWD) on this one. It stars Andrew Mukamal, Erica Domesek, and John Jannuzzi and is really, really funny. And we won’t judge you for only using the Valencia filter on your Instagram after. OK we might a little. {WWD}

Tim Gunn is 29 Years Celibate: Sounds like someone’s not making it work in the bedroom. The Project Runway workroom mentor has revealed that an ex-lover so badly scorned him that he in turn completely gave up sex. I’m sorry Tim, but “this worries me.” {Celebuzz}

Tommy Hilfiger Spring 2012: Warholian Prep and ‘Floral-flage’

I’m not a whiz when it comes to the rules of physics, but if that whole “like attracts like” theory truly applies, then it should come as no surprise that the king of prep’s evening show was highly attended by, well, other mega-moguls. Russell Simmons was there, as were Anna Wintour and Anna Dello Russo (who I suppose could claim the Queen of Quirky Fascinators title by now, if nothing else). Actress Abbie Cornish and model Petra Nemcova showed as well, which made plenty of sense considering the twosome’s penchant for clean, chic clothes. More puzzling was the presence of singer Corinne Bailey Rae, who is inching dangerously close to earning what the Fug Girls have termed “The New Sophia Bush Award” (for ubiquitous presence at any and every show at NYFW).
