Fashion Biz News: Hilfiger Invests in Kors, Moda Operandi Raises $10 Million, Deb Files for Bankruptcy

It’s been a busy week for the fashion business….

This morning, WWD suggested that serial investor Tommy Hilfiger might be spending some cash on the fashion brand Michael Kors, which is trying to raise around $500 million for a global expansion plan (including an IPO). In the past, Hilfiger has invested in the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and is currently a consultant for the English heritage brand Belstaff. With Hilfiger’s namesake brand now owned by conglomerate PvH, he obviously has an extra bit of time on his hands–or at least space is in his brain–for new projects….

New in Summer Eyewear: Tommy Hilfiger Goes Surfing and Oliver Peoples Throws a BBQ

This week there were two appropriately summery parties to launch the new eyewear collections of two iconic American brands. Tommy Hilfiger celebrated its first foray into eyewear–and its yearlong 25th anniversary–with a party at the James Hotel in NYC and a movie dedicated to surfers. Oliver Peoples hosted an intimate gathering of bloggers who were invited to hang out with founder Larry Leight, try on sunglasses, and eat fancy barbecue.

Did you ever wonder how Oliver Peoples, now owned by Luxottica, got its name?

Tommy Hilfiger’s Preppy Pop-up “Cottage” Is Bigger Than Our Apartment

Tommy Hilfiger’s Preppy Pop-up “Cottage” Is Bigger Than Our Apartment

Remember when we told you that Tommy Hilfiger would launch a pop-up “house” tour this summer? Well, the initiative just got off the ground (or, on the ground, depending how you look at it).

The preppy label has erected a shingled, shuttered beach cottage that brings a piece of New England pomp to the cobblestones of NYC’s Meatpacking district.

But the commitment to all things prep doesn’t stop at the cottage’s threshold. Inside, the sixty-piece “Prep World” collection (a collaboration with Preppy Handbook author Lisa Birnbach) takes Tommy’s classic pieces up a notch, steeping them in madras and chambray and sprinkling them with rope details and anchor motifs.

Tommy Hilfiger Men’s Fall 2011: Youthful Revolt
Menswear

Tommy Hilfiger Men’s Fall 2011: Youthful Revolt

When I was a youngster, I attended a religious institution where the uniform required a burgundy blazer. Most of my peers and their parents scoffed at the color choice, but I always thought it was kind of chic. Tommy Hilfiger recalled my younger days with a preppy A/W 2011 collection that started with a burgundy overcoat, and brought the color back again and again, in his blocked sweaters, scarves, trousers and jackets.

Hilfiger, with some help from Simon Spurr, evoked “both boarding schools and Brooklyn clubs” with “a foundation for separates,” a movement away from his base for one of America’s kings of the suit. But the mix of prep and indie has been accomplished with great intelligence, as the moleskin blazers and Pendleton striped shirting mixed effortlessly with slim cargo and jersey knit track pants. The whole package was tied together with a focus on outerwear: motorcycle jackets, overcoats (with toggles), bonded macs and heavy bombers dominated. I would have been sent straight to detention if I’d showed up to class in one of his blazer-and-sweatpant combos, even a blazer at natty as these ones, but I like the concept.

Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2011: Channeling Marianne Faithful

Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2011: Channeling Marianne Faithful

As editors tapped their toes to the tunes of the incomparable Mick Jagger & Co., all-American design icon Tommy sent out a fall collection inspired by “the nonchalant style of a 1970′s rock star’s girlfriend.” You could certainly see it in the bevy of menswear looks–models sported oversized, three-piece pinstripe suits accented with pocket squares and stack-heeled loafers we suggest jumping on the waitlist for now. The silky, diaphanous foulard-print maxi dresses and pajama pants projected just the right feel of laid-back seventies luxe, but the outerwear was what really caught our eye.

Tommy Hilfiger Takes the Pop-Up Shop Concept to Extremes

Tommy Hilfiger Takes the Pop-Up Shop Concept to Extremes

We’ve seen pop-up shops. We’ve seen shops-on-wheels. But Tommy Hilfiger is taking the idea of a temporary boutique to another level. In honor of the label’s collaboration with Preppy Handbook author Lisa Burnbach, Hilfiger and co. have built an 800 square foot “traveling beach cottage,” which opens in New York City on April 28. The cottage–which we’re assuming is of the pre-fab variety–will be open for a week in Manhattan. It will then be moved to two other US cities, as well as a slew of foreign ones, including Paris, Amsterdam, Milan, Stockholm, Madrid, Belgium, and Tokyo.

Prep World, the capsule collection sold in this nifty outpost, is an homage to “Hilfiger’s preppy classics with a twist,” Tommy.com. But we’d much prefer to see it up close in that house, which will literally seem as though it has fallen from the sky.

Fashion News Roundup: Kerr Covers Aussie Vogue Pregnant, Lindsay’s a Plastinina, and Brooklyn Law Disgusted by Diesel

A Very Pregnant Kerr Covers Australian Vogue: Vogue Australia landed its first pregnant cover girl and it’s none other than Miranda Kerr. After being photographed preggers and nude for W, it was only a matter of time before she ended up on a cover. {Catwalk Queen}

LiLo Poses for Kira: Yeah, Kira Plastinina still exists in some parts of the world. And Lindsay Lohan is the new face of the brand. {TMZ}

Greetings From Zac Posen: The designer has sketched a dress that looks like a Christmas tree for his very own holiday card. Buy a box–the proceeds will benefit New Yorkers For Children. {Tiny Prints}

Brooklyn Law School Is Not Stupid: By now, we’re sure you’ve seen Diesel’s “Be Stupid” campaign. Well, Brooklyn Law School rented out their library expecting a tasteful shoot. Instead, they got pictures of young models running around in their underwear grinding against bookshelves, books, and other models. The dean is not happy. {New York Post}

Tommy Hilfiger Honored at Pratt Legends Gala, Tells Aspiring Designers to “Never Give Up”

Tommy Hilfiger Honored at Pratt Legends Gala, Tells Aspiring Designers to “Never Give Up”

Pratt Institute’s Board of Trustees conceived the Legends Awards in 1999 to honor icons within the worlds of art and design, whose accomplishments and values resonate with those of the school. The event is also a scholarship benefit for Pratt students, 80% of whom require financial aid to pursue their educations. Marc Jacobs, Julian Schnabel, Takashi Murakami and Bruce Weber are among past recipients.

In the 25th year of his brand, Tommy Hilfiger was one of the night’s honorees. He told us the best part of the night was reuniting with friends and supporters who believed in him since the very beginning, including his original backer Mohan Murjani, and George Lois, who created his first advertising campaign. “It’s kind of a fun, special night because I have a great group of people with me. It’s all about the people you surround yourself with.”

The night culminated in a performance by Johnny Cash’s daughter Rosanne Cash. Music has played a major part in Tommy’s branding lately. The Strokes performed at the designer’s fashion week bash and he recently launched a music-themed fragrance and and accompanying digital radio station called LOUD, on which he collaborated with the Ting Tings, who will headline a LOUD European tour.
