Fashion News Roundup: Vogue UK EIC Pens A Novel, Tracy Reese Talks Trayvon Martin Case, and Fashion People’s Tats

Tracy Reese Weighs in on the Trayvon Martin Case: Like most of the country, the designer is outraged at the shooting of the innocent, unarmed teenage boy. She talked to Huffington Post’s Black Voices about the matter, articulating her views on the troubling assumption in our society that People of Color are always up to no good:” The whole thing is just so sad, and the excuses are so lame… White people wear hoodies too,” she said. “It’s so sad that people want to be in fear of you just because you’re a young man of color.” Couldn’t have said it better, Ms. Reese. {Huffington Post}

10 New Ways to Wear Ponytails, Straight From the Fall Runways

Ponytails are the new braids. From New York all the way through Paris—the ponytail reigned supreme during the fall 2012 season. Obviously the pony is a perennial favorite, but it had a particularly strong showing this season. But the style can be more challenging to reproduce than it seems. On the catwalk, it’s a high-fashion look that reads casual and low-maintenance. But on the sidewalk, it has the potential to come across quite lackluster, horribly humdrum, and soccer mom-ish.

That’s where we come in—a few of our favorite designers (in collaboration with their amazing runway hair stylists) have found easy and interesting ways to retell the age-old pony tale. Here, ten quick tips for the prettiest, fashion-forward, DIY ponies ever, straight from the fall 2012 runways.

Tracy Reese Fall 2012: City Girls Wear Color

Tracy Reese Fall 2012: City Girls Wear Color

Each Fashion Week, you’ll have the high-concept thematic collections, the over-the-top sexed out ones and grungy downtown cool styles, but honestly, sometimes all I want to do is look at pretty, flattering pieces I know will make me feel good about myself. And that’s why I love me a Tracy Reese show (and why I go bananas at her sample sales).

“I wanted to do something bold and vibrant,” the designer told me backstage before the show. “Very confident and using color in a very optimistic way. We have a lot of gorgeous fabrics, amazing textures – playing with mixing those textures and layering in a lot of cool embellishments. The skirt lengths are shorter – I just feel [like a shorter hemline] seems more active and energetic. And I want the clothes to have a lot of energy and I think you’ll see that on the runway.”
