Vanessa Bruno Fall 2013: Girl-Boy-Girl

If there’s a definite trend emerging from the Paris Fashion Week Fall 2013 shows, it’s the idea of masculine versus feminine. Androgyny has little to do with it. Instead, designers—Marco Zanini at Rochas and Dries van Noten in particular—have sent out models in very feminine or very masculine looks, bringing together what some would consider mutually exclusive ideas.

Vanessa Bruno went down a similar path for fall.

Vanessa Bruno Spring 2013

The vibe was Woodstock pronounced with a French accent. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but if Vanessa Bruno can find common traits between Lou Doillon and Kate Bosworth (her two muses), there is surely a little bit of French hippy inside of you, too.

Trendspotting: Patch It Up

As if the prints, prints, and more prints trend wasn’t enough this season, Paris fashion week has shown us how it can be taken even further… putting them all together through patchwork, of course! Many designers have included the technique this week, from Miu Miu‘s precious retro wallpaper shifts to Balenciaga‘s archival prints on long, Read more →

Vanessa Bruno Spring 2012: Quilty Cool

PARIS–Vanessa Bruno’s girl for spring is a bit boho, a bit mod, a bit DIY, and always cool. Mod minis looked like they were made of hipster quilts–nostalgic floral prints I had as my bedspread when I was five sewn together with squares of shimmering silver. Bruno amped up the mod-factor with open-toe knee-high boots. Shagadellic. Images of trucks then wove their way onto patchwork tops and dresses for a literal boy-meets-girl vibe.

Vanessa Bruno Fall 2011: Layer Upon Layer

PARIS–On Vanessa Bruno‘s fall runway at the Palais de Tokyo, it looked like models had run through clotheslines hung with fresh white linens, but, you know, stylishly. So that squares of cream and white were draped and smocked and twisted as tops and were pieced together as delicate skirts with rag-tag hemlines. Then sturdier, thicker fabrics more suitable for colder months emerged on brocade jackets with no lapels, fastened tight, and on chunky loosely woven knits (a la Rag & Bone) thrown over those drape-y delicate cream pieces. Bruno played with this contrast in texture throughout the collection–mixing lighter than air separates and dresses in a painterly leaf print with heavier jackets, nubby knits, and, my favorite, slouchy wool coats with collars done in fur and knits.

Vanessa Bruno Storms Los Angeles with Erin Wasson, Rosario Dawson, and the 90210 Girls

LOS ANGELES–Last night’s soiree at Vanessa Bruno’s first US boutique in Los Angeles brought some serious Parisian flair to Melrose Ave. The white, minimalist space provided a fresh backdrop to the bright florals and neons of the spring 2011 collection, which Bruno described as channeling an “urban, tropical spirit.” As for choosing a location for her stateside flagship, Bruno told us, “I love the spirit of LA, the laidback girls, everything about it. The first place I wanted to be was in LA.”
