Paco Rabanne Has a New Creative Director

A month after the recently revivied Paco Rabanne label parted ways with creative director Manish Arora, the label has already named a successor. According to a press release, up-and-coming designer Lydia Maurer is the new Artistic Director of Women’s Ready-to-Wear at the house.

While Maurer’s name may not ring any bells outside the industry, the 29-year-old designer has definitely been around the block:

As Gucci Continues to Go After Guess for Trademark Infringement, What Does It All Mean for Louboutin vs. YSL?

The three-year-long Gucci v. Guess trademark infringement debacle finally came to an end this week in the US, with Gucci awarded the relatively low settlement of $4.7 million in damages (compared to the requested $221 million). But it’s not over yet: WWD is reporting that Gucci is apparently planning to file new brand protection cases in Italy, China, and France. So this is going to drag out for a long time.

But the case has been raising a lot of questions.

Hedi Slimane’s First Collection for YSL Will Be Shown to Buyers Only

Hedi Slimane’s First Collection for YSL Will Be Shown to Buyers Only

Looks like we’ll have to wait even longer to see Hedi Slimane for Yves Saint Laurent in action: It’s just been announced that the newly appointed Creative Director won’t be hosting a runway presentation for his first collection at the iconic French house.

While some designers have chosen to escalate the prominence and visibility of their mid-season resort collections with an over-the-top show (cough, Chanel), WWD reports that Slimane has chosen the more low-key route of presenting his YSL women’s cruise and spring menswear to buyers only in late June or early July.

Battle of the Minimalists: Has Raf Simons’ Dior Appointment Ignited a Three-Way Rivalry?

As you’ve probably heard, the biggest fashion story of the past year got resolved yesterday when Christian Dior announced that Raf Simons would take over as artistic director of the house, succeeding John Galliano. The news comes only one month after former Dior Homme designer Hedi Slimane was named creative director at Yves Saint Laurent. Read more →

Stefano Pilati Talks YSL (For the First Time Since Leaving) and What’s Next

In his first interview since showing his final collection for Yves Saint Laurent just four weeks ago, Stefano Pilati was the guest of honor at last night’s Fashion Talks at the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF). He sat down with Pamela Golbin, Chief Curator of the Louvre’s Musée de la Mode et du Textile to chat about his career thus far and what might be next.

While the two skirted around the issue of what exactly led to Pilati’s somewhat sudden departure from YSL, and never mentioned his successor, Hedi Slimane, one got the impression that his time there was complicated and so is he, as a person.

Pierre Bergé on Hedi Slimane: ‘He’s a Member of the YSL Family’

Friday night, the Denver Art Museum held a black tie opening gala for their major fashion exhibition coup, Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective. I heard more than one Denverian (?) refer to this as Denver’s biggest event since the Democratic National Convention. Indeed, hundreds of Denver’s elite showed up as well as the mayor, a few French ambassadors, and several chic French people and members of the Fondation Pierre Bergé Yves Saint Laurent, including its founder, co-founder of the Yves Saint Laurent house and Saint Laurent’s longtime partner, Pierre Bergé.

It was clear that all of them were genuinely happy to be there and could not have been more pleased with the exhibit and its surprising new home. Berge, who, from a distance and by some accounts, seems like he could be a difficult man to please, said in a brief speech at the event, “Yves Saint Laurent would be very proud to be here.”

Later that evening, we tracked him down inside the exhibit (the museum set aside a private seating area for him which he never used), where he told us he didn’t have a favorite part of the exhibit. “I like everything,” he said. “Of course for me what is important is the tuxedo [wall] because it is the first one and also the Mondrian dress because it is an iconic dress.” He had equally nice and enthusiastic things to say about Yves Saint Laurent’s brand new creative director, Hedi Slimane:

The Best Shoes of the Fall 2012 Season

The Best Shoes of the Fall 2012 Season

We’ve scoured the Fall 2012 collections for the most amazing shoes, and it was easy, because there were plenty. The best part? Footwear options for Fall 2012 are a lot more reasonable than their Spring 2012 counterparts. (Remember those 6 inch Versace lucite wedges?)

Fall 2012 saw lots of wide heels and mary-janes on the runway, and sometimes both simultaneously–like at Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Marni. Knee-high black boots ruled at Alexander Wang, Altuzarra, Givenchy, and Rick Owens, and ladylike pumps could be found at Lanvin, Nina Ricci, and Jil Sander. Of course, if you’re looking for something crazy, look no further than Alexander McQueen’s heel-less fur shoes. Impractical, but so lovely.

Take a look at all the amazing shoes from Fall 2012 and just try to pick a favorite. It’s near impossible.
