Fashioning Workers’ Rights For Women
From the Runways of New York to the Factories of Dhaka

Fashioning Workers’ Rights For Women

The runways of New York and the factories of Bangladesh could not seem further apart. Yet they both drive a global, 1.5 trillion dollar industry: the fashion industry. And in both cases, the work is performed overwhelmingly by young women and girls–fashion models, on the one hand, and garment workers on the other–both of whom are struggling to assert their rights in a hostile labor environment.

Sara Ziff, founder of the Model Alliance took a trip to Dhaka last summer to learn more about the garment industry there and see the conditions on the ground. In this exclusive video, you’ll learn about Sara’s trip, and her more recent work with international labor rights groups (WRC, ILRF) and activists like Kalpona Akter and Tazreen Factor fire survivor Sumi Abedin. Watch and get the message out: let’s put the pressure on major labels to sign on to the Bangladesh Build Fire and Safety Agreement.

Donatella Versace on What You Can Expect from the New Versus

Last November, Versace announced a new strategy for its little sister line Versus. Christopher Kane would no longer design it, and Versus would never do a runway show again. A new video airing exclusively on Fashionista sheds some light on what Versace has in mind for her beloved Versus (she says it’s “the first collection my brother Gianni gave to me in complete freedom to do”) in advance of the first designer capsule collection for Versus with J.W. Anderson.

First Look at Kate Spade Saturday’s Fall 2013 Collection

For those of us who love the Kate Spade attitude but are more tomboy than girly girl, the brand’s Kate Spade Saturday offshoot—which launched this spring—is something of a sartorial godsend.

While the currently available styles are a fun, not-too-serious mix of ’80s-inspired prints—I love the windowpane check and the blue paint splatter best—fall’s focus is a deep, dark palette with just a hint of ’70s ski bunny. But whatever era Kate Spade Saturday is channeling, the sporty, modern feel is the same.

Click through for a first look at the fall collection. And shop Kate Spade Saturday’s spring offerings at Saturday.com.

When we heard that buzzy up-and-coming designer Calla Haynes was collaborating with Parisian staple Comptoir des Cotonniers on a capsule collection–at contemporary price points–well, let’s just say we were excited.

Now that we’ve actually seen the collection, in all its oh-so-pretty, French ingenue glory, it’s possible we’re even more stoked.

Paris-based Haynes took time out of researching her next runway collection to talk us through the range, in stores on May 2. See our conversation below, and click through our exclusive gallery of full collection looks. Because spring is finally in the air…
