A lot goes into making fashion week happen. And despite the proliferation of fashion reality television shows, there is still a lot that you might not know about. So, we decided to ask some of our friends in the industry what their day to day life is like leading up to, during and following fashion week. From the perspective of a designer, a publicist, a show producer, a pit photographer, a makeup artist and more, keep reading to learn how fashion week gets made.
Makeup, from natural to full-on body warpaint, is an integral piece of any runway show. It adds to the aesthetic of the show and helps to showcase the clothes, because makeup is truly transformative. We chatted with MAC senior artist Victor Cembellin, who has been practicing his craft for designers/labels like Zac Posen, Balenciaga, and Vivienne Westwood for over 15 years, and who has put his time in the backstage trenches (He once spent an hour and a half gluing feathers on one girl at an Alexander McQueen show.) Here’s what it’s like to be a makeup artist on a runway show.
PARIS–What an emotional roller coaster Armani couture was on Tuesday night. As if Cameron Diaz’s platinum crop wasn’t enough of a thrill, Jessica Chastain received a phone call nanoseconds before the show with news of her Oscar nomination. How could a collection ever live up to such a double-act?
Well, it did. For the collection struck that subtle balance between Giorgio’s taste for anything that shimmers, and the sweet silliness of the hairdos–remarkably messy hair with Swarovski-crystal encrusted corkscrews worn straight on the head, a ‘do fit for Helena Bonham Carter.
We’ll post the full Chanel couture collection and a review of the show later today, but the Twit pics coming in from the show early this morning were too good not to share. Today, Karl Lagerfeld showed his couture collection on an airplane in the middle of the Grand Palais, complete with in flight beverage service. The ‘Air Chanel’ plane took five days to construct, the Telegraph is reporting. The stewardesses, well, naturally they wore Chanel couture. Poppy Delevingne joked about “Joining the fashion mile high club with CHANEL,” on Twitter. Har har.
According to a Tweet from Derek Blasberg, Lagerfeld said he wanted to watch a fashion show on an airplane “instead of a boring old movie.” He told the Telegraph’s Lisa Armstrong, “I love flying. It’s the one time I can escape. I don’t have to talk; everyone around me is watching screens. I can be alone. It’s perfect.”
Now let’s live vicariously through all the fancy fashion people’s Twit pics and go to the Chanel show from our desks at work. Assembled in chronological order, of course. Read more »
Chanel’s pre-fall 2012 show was nothing if not sumptuous. Kohl-smudged eyes and a lavish Indian banquet set the tone for a collection that was definitely not subtle. Peter Philips, Chanel’s creative director of makeup, wielded his gold fairy dust liberally on the models, adding golden highlights to cheeks and eyes, Style.com is reporting. So this was not the setting for a subtle, nude polish.
I always love Jason Wu‘s pre fall and resort collections and feel they are a testament to how talented and versatile he is. The in-between seasons typically have more of a commercial focus than spring and fall, but Wu never sacrifices one bit of quality. He shows that he can do wearable options like pants, sweaters, blouses, jackets and flats just as well as he can do sparkly evening gowns, with the same attention to detail and ability to make every piece special and unique.
Karl Lagerfeld just sent his Métiers d’Art Pre-Fall 2012 collection for Chanel down this amazing “runway” at the Galerie Courbe in the Grand Palais in Paris. Sadly, we are not there, but photos of the setting are trickling in on Twitter, and it looks like the biggest, most decadent banquet ever. Read more »
It looks like Milan is going to get its way in September 2012 and will be able to show its designers’ spring 2013 collections from September 19-25. Diane von Furstenberg had indicated last month that the CFDA would “bite the bullet” and switch dates, and now that appears to be the official plan, WWD is reporting.
New York and London will both agree to move its show dates back a week–New York will run from September 6-13 and London from September 14-18–with a few caveats.
The Victoria’s Secret fashion show, which taped on November 9 and airs November 29 on CBS, is a $12 million production. That’s a lot of perfectly bouncy hair, boobs, glitter, wings, and a lot a lot of man hours. In this exclusive video, the gorgeous Angels break down the show by the numbers. Plus you get a peek at the show!
The backstage of fashion shows are usually a hot hectic mess. But not Victoria’s Secret. When you have the budget to put on a $12 runway show, backstage is pretty swank. As in, there was a carving station. And models actually eat from it.
The models wear very short pink silk robes while extensions and hair spray and bronzer and shimmering make up is applied in heaps. But they’re all smiles throughout. These girls are having fun. Our street style photog Ashley was there to capture the magic that is Victoria’s Secret backstage. Highlights included Kanye making an appearance and chatting with Alessandra Ambrosio, and Adriana Lima posing for an impromptu lingerie shoot on top of a table.
The annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show taped last night, and though you’ll have to wait until November 29 to see the Angels walk the runway (as well as Nicki Minaj, Kanye and Jay-Z’s live performances!), you can check out every look from the show right now. We’ve got all the outfits, from Miranda Kerr’s $2.5 million bra to Alessandra Ambrosio’s ballerina shoes to first-time VS walker Karlie Kloss‘ disco-ball butt. Click through our gallery to see the spectacle in its entirety. Which look is your favorite?
The 16th annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show taped Wednesday night at the 26th St. Armory (it airs November 29 on CBS) and as usual, it was glittery, sexy and totally over-the-top. The $12 million show handily rivaled last night’s celeb-filled Prince-headlined Versace for H&M extravaganza, though there were some repeat performances. Nicki Minaj filled in [...]
About a month ago, we told you about Fashion Week Internationale, Vice‘s new web series, in which intrepid reporter/Karlie Kloss doppelganger Charlet Duboc explores all those other fashion weeks that take place around the world. The very entertaining and eye-opening Pakistan and Full-Figured fashion weeks have already aired (you can watch those here), but we are especially fascinated by this week’s episode: Colombia Fashion Week.
We got a sneak peek of the episode and from beginning to end, it does not disappoint. It begins with a song in which the phrase “spank her ass” is repeated over and over again (in Spanish) and hostess Charlet Duboc makes the following astute observation: “Most fashion weeks are synonymous with cocaine, but this fashion week’s having an extra hard time totally trying to dispel that.” Read more »
