As if the prints, prints, and more prints trend wasn’t enough this season, Paris fashion week has shown us how it can be taken even further… putting them all together through patchwork, of course! Many designers have included the technique this week, from Miu Miu‘s precious retro wallpaper shifts to Balenciaga‘s archival prints on long, Read more →
If Kanye West thought that he was done reading embarrassing things about his debut collection, he unfortunately has one more to get through. In the New York Times, Eric Wilson explored some of the hurdles Kanye is facing and also analyzes whether or not the rapper really understands what he needs to do to improve. Plus Wilson got some absolutely golden quotes from fashion industry people about the collection.
The piece starts off with this gem, after describing that f-bomb heavy speech Kanye gave at his after party:
“I gave you everything that I had,” [Kanye] said, one of his few printable remarks.
If that is true, Mr. West faces bigger obstacles in life than credit-card debt. His show was described by those who attended as, at best, a disappointment, and yet the rapper could be found almost everywhere during Paris Fashion Week defending himself.
Other salient points:
OK, so maybe we were a bit too enthusiastic in our last post about the Chanel polishes you’ll be wearing next spring. Turns out that the pearly white seen on many of the models might not even be produced, according to Beauty Counter Blog, who had the good fortune to be backstage at the Chanel Read more →
Carine Roitfeld threw a launch party for her new book Irreverent in Paris last night. The theme was bal des vampires, meaning it was basically this season’s answer to last year’s French Vogue masquerade ball.
The fashion crowd went with the theme–some full on (Olivier Theyskens), some only slightly more vampiric than usual (Julia Restoin Roitfeld), some just dressed in black (Kanye West) and one guest wore a giant red Giles Deacon X Stephen Jones swan on her head (guess who!). It’s hard to tell whether or not Karl Lagerfeld dressed up and Karlie Kloss let us know that her recent penchant for near-nudity is not relegated to magazines and runways. She wore a risqué black Anthony Vaccarello gown (which she also wore on the runway) that revealed most of her torso and had a slit that went all the way to the hip.
If anything, this was a pretty awesome party idea–and just in time for Halloween. Who do you think did vampire chic best?
The Telegraph got a quickie interview backstage with Marc Jacobs, and while everyone was admonished to not speak of, you know, that little Dior rumor, the video gives a bit of insight into MJ’s mindset. We don’t get to hear him speak very often, so it’s fun to hear him tell stories–some things just don’t Read more →
The shows may be almost over, but that doesn’t mean we’re tired of looking at outfits. And since everyone knows the real fashion show takes place outside the tents, we scoured the street style shots to find our faves.
From style icon editors like Taylor Tomasi Hill and Anna Dello Russo to models Hanne Gaby Odiele and Iekeliene Stange, check out our favorite street style looks from Paris Fashion Week.
The summer of skinny belts is over. The big houses in Paris are showing wide statement belts with pants, dresses, skirts, and just about everything else. From Jean Paul Gaultier’s corset-like option, to Balmain’s gold buckle that rivals a WWF belt, to Céline’s buzzed-about classic trench belts, everyone has a vision for how to hold Read more →
The Chanel spring 2012 show walked a few hours ago, and the theme was “under the sea.” No surprise then that pearls–already a classic Chanel motif–were featured prominently on the clothes and in the beauty looks. What we were most interested in (I mean, duh) was the nail polish. See above for the pearly white Read more →
We’re not sure what to make of this just yet but according to reports making the rounds on the internet, Chanel Iman and Kanye West may be dating.
The two attended the Givenchy after-show party in Paris together and according to Media Takeout (whose headline says the couple are “official”) they were spotted “arm-in-arm,” while LA Late claims, “West and Iman were embraced with his head on her shoulder.”
It sounds like Kanye West had a pretty awesome weekend following his runway debut in Paris saturday night (check out our review here). There was, of course, an after party, at which the rapper-turned-fashion fan-turned designer got up and made a speech to a crowd that included Lindsay Lohan, Karlie Kloss, Jared Leto, Dean and Dan Caten, Olivier Theyskens and more, that WWD describes as a “stream-of-consciousness, obscenity-laced tirade.” Here it is, in all its glory:
PARIS–Gisele took a little break from Boston to make a rare runway appearance at Givenchy tonight. The show also drew A-list celebs like Jennifer Hudson, brand-devotee Liv Tyler, and Kanye West who is obviously not afraid to show his face following the poor reception to his debut collection (he was at Celine, too). Kanye West showed his debut collection tonight in Paris. The show was easily one of the most buzzed about of the week and he wrangled an impressive front row, with designers outweighing celebrities. Based on reports from Twitter and Eric Wilson’s just-posted write-up on the Times‘ blog On the Runway, Azzedine Alaïa, Joseph Altuzarra, Alexander Wang, Olivier Theyskens, Dean and Dan Caten, Jeremy Scott and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were all there. The right editors were there too: Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, Glenda Bailey and Anna Dello Russo. As for the celebrities who showed? La Lohan was there, as we reported, and so was Ciara, but sadly Beyonce and Jay-Z were no-shows. Or maybe, not so sadly, considering the show was slammed by critics almost as soon as the first model hit the runway.
We’ll have our review posted tomorrow morning (our fabulous contributor, Flaunt’s Long Nguyen, was one of the lucky 100 granted a ticket). Until then, here’s what the critics had to say about it over Twitter. Warning, it’s not pretty.
While one could argue that American Vogue editors have a “look,” we’ve never seen any as similarly dressed as these three French Voguettes. Always chic editor-in-chief Emanuelle Alt has become known for her laid-back rock & roll style. The look has made her a street style darling, and now so are her minions assistants who, from a distance, could easily be mistaken for her. The similarity between all of them is a little startling, from the medium-length brown hair to the loose top paired with low-slung cropped jeans and pumps to the tanned, often makeup-free skin.
We’ve been seeing the three of them together at all the fashion weeks–at least we think it’s always the same girls. Everyone seems to be after Alt’s effortless chic look these days.
However, after doing some research, we’ve assesed that it’s usually Capucine Safyurtlu and Geraldine Saglio.
PARIS–The Paris fashion crew isn’t as excited about Kanye West’s debut fashion show as we are aux États-Unis. Still, buzz is building for the rapper’s October 1 show, which he’s set to present at 9:30 p.m. And we’re guessing that buzz will reach fever pitch if the guest list is as star-studded as we’re hearing.
We’ve heard from a few sources that Jay-Z and Beyoncé will be attending (that means Beyoncé will have hit up New York, London and Paris fashion weeks). Ditto Ciara, who has already made an appearance at Barbara Bui (look for her to be the Sophia Bush of Paris Fashion Week). And the latest totally unconfirmed speculation about who will be in Kanye’s coveted front row?
Less than two weeks after Karlie shocked the world by posing topless for Mario Testino in Allure, she does it again on the runway, this time baring her bottom half. She closed the Dior runway show (which we thought looked super pretty by the way) and left the audience with an eyeful…of her ass. This Read more →
Contact lens wearers beware: if the designers of Milan and Paris have anything to say about it, there’s the potential for a lot of junk to be falling into your eye this spring. From the gold leaf at Fendi to the taped-on “floating eyeliner” at Gareth Pugh, you’re going to need some protective eyewear. Don’t Read more →
While everyone is hemming and hawing over who is to take the reigns at Dior, one man has been quietly and steadfastly doing his job, stepping into that hallowed role, without much fanfare. Bill Gaytten, who worked behind-the-scenes with John Galliano for 21 years, has taken the reigns at Dior and at John Galliano, and will have the distinction this season of being the only designer to take a bow at both shows, WWD reports (subscription required).
Gaytten is creative director at Galliano and his title is head of studio at Dior, however without a creative director yet installed, there’s no doubt that Gaytten is head designer in everything but name at the famed couture house. So what can we expect this season at Dior from a man, which we know so little about?
Here it is: Lady Gaga’s short film for Mugler (or at least part of it), which debuted at Nicola Formichetti‘s show in Paris yesterday. We’ll have our review and images up shortly, but for now, check out a gap-toothed Gaga swinging her multi-colored hair around while talking about how her heart sometimes feels black, but Read more →
PARIS–We spotted model-of-the-moment Lindsey Wixson looking cozy with photographer Theo Wenner at last night’s screening of Harmony Korine‘s new film Snowballs for Proenza Schouler. They’ve also been spotted together at some other fashion-y functions–do we smell a new couple?
Wenner is, of course, the 24-year-old son of Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner, as well as Liv Tyler’s recent ex. Lindsey Wixson is, well, gorgeous. And 17. Maybe they’re just friends, but maybe it’s more?
PARIS–Paris fashion week kicked off yesterday with a sexy bang. Anthony Vaccarello‘s spring 2012 brought the sexy back in a big way. It’s inaccurate to even call the slits on his revealing LBDs thigh high–hip high is more like it. The same amount of thigh would be exposed in a Baywatch bathing suit. It is Read more →
