WWWWD: The Man Issue

Jul 02, 2009 @ 9:13am

2005SISportsmanOfTheYearTomBrady.jpg.jpegJust in time for the long weekend, the latest issue of WWWWD has arrived to amuse us all. As always we have more than a few favorite moments including but certainly not limited to:

—A timeline of manhood that includes Three Men and a Baby, Tom Brady, Paula Poundstone, Dante, and Lil Bow Wow. Enough said.

—LVMH entering the beer market with a gold-canned brand called Laissez-Faire. Possible face of the brand Jade Jagger loves the idea: “Laissez-Faire combines my two main interests - gold French stuff and beer - into one fabulous thing that will get me wasted.”

—Kris Van Assche feeling homesick for himself. But luckily he welcomes himself back with open arms.

—Fashion lovelies reveal what they love in a guy. Grace Coddington’s made me spit out my morning Diet Coke.

—Mert & Marcus want nothing to do with Shia LeBeouf’s package. Quite frankly, neither do we.

Happy Reading!

The Gray Lady

Jul 01, 2009 @ 6:14pm

62709Monotone_44Web[1].jpgMr. Schuman is across the pond, shooting around France and Italy, and we’ve in l-o-v-e with this all-gray Parisian he posted yesterday.

We’ve been noticing a lot gray around the streets of New York ourselves, and think it’s a great color. For us, light gray, light brown and white are very summery - exuding calm and relaxing vibes. But we’ve never seen it put together head-to-toe quite as well as this woman did it.

A monotone ensemble requires careful planning. Not all shades of the same color look good together. And unless you buy all the different pieces at the same time, it could get difficult to mentally match your shades.

Museum of Bergdorf

Jun 29, 2009 @ 9:49am

bergdorf windows.jpgBergdorf Goodman’s teamed up with the American Visionary Art Museum for their 5th Avenue windows.

The museum’s in Baltimore, Maryland, but its artists created a collection of fantastical backdrops here in New York for clothes from Jason Wu and Oscar De La Renta, brightly colored homes for Louboutin shoes, erratic sketches frame a bejeweled Valentino bag and a man carved from wood watches over a Rodarte look complete with slashed gloves and Nicholas Kirkwood boots.

The museum’s mission statement defines visionary art as “art produced by self-taught individuals, usually without formal training, whose works arise from an innate personal vision that revels foremost in the creative act itself,” which, when combined with the best of pre-fall fashion makes for a must-visit outdoor museum on the street.

Thank god it’s finally stopped raining.

Let's Go To the Movies

Jun 26, 2009 @ 11:12am

funnyfacemovieposter.jpgAt the Met, no less. How chic is that?

The Costume Institute is launching a film series during July in conjunction with their Model as Muse exhibit and they’ve lined up some pretty awesome special guests to attend and discuss the movies, along with curator Harold Koda and guest curator Kohle Yohannan.

Here’s the lineup:

July 10 - Funny Face and Carmen Dell’Orifice
July 17 - Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo? and Dorothy McGowan
July 22 - Unzipped and Isaac Mizrahi

Tickets are only $10 and you can get them here.

It’ll be like a way more stylish version of all those film classes we loved so in college. Plus, we’re just about due for our annual viewing of Unzipped and we can’t wait to watch it with Isaac himself.

America, America

Jun 24, 2009 @ 3:50pm

obamasneaker[1].jpgHave you made plans for the Fourth of July yet? We hope you’re going to be catching some awesome fireworks or grilling out at a sweet barbecue. The American patriotic spirit has even gone global, thanks to Obama-mania.

The latest in the ever-growing category of Obama-inspired fashion (see: Rodarte for Sonia Rykiel) comes from Italian shoemaker Cesare Paciotti - an Obama Tennis Shoe. It’s very simple: a white sneaker emblazoned with the good ol’ stars and stripes.

We don’t mean to be anglophiles, but in the past if we thought about wrapping a flag around our bodies, we’d usually choose the Union Jack.

But now we’re thinking twice about it thanks to Cesare’s cool American look. While the president served as inspiration, the flag detail pretty much embraces the whole country.

So come the Fourth, let’s wave—and wear—our flags proudly.

The Next Big (skinny) Thing

Jun 23, 2009 @ 2:08pm

amanda laine ford model contest.jpgLast year, V named Amanda Laine their model search winner.

Since then, the Canadian’s walked everything from Alex Wang to McQueen, Miu Miu to Vuitton. She’s been in V (obviously), Interview, POP, Numero, W, Bazaar and more. Needless to say, Stephen Gan’s eye for runway potential has a one up on Tyra’s.

So now the mag’s teamed up with Ford Models and thrown Alexander Wang onto their judging panel to find the next superstar. They’ve already received over 6000 online entries, but you have until June 29th to submit your profile on their site.

Finalists will be announced July 3rd and from there the winner gets an editorial in V and a contract with Ford, which is kind of priceless. Gan wants to, “unearth the next classic female beauty with a twist.”

If that’s you, you better get a move on.

Father O' Mine

Jun 19, 2009 @ 11:07am

abbyanddad.jpgWe all know Father’s Day is this weekend. Or if this is your reminder, get to rush ordering online stat!

And this dad’s day-inspired story that Refinery29 did on their blog just made our Friday morning. They’ve got a slew of photos that staffers and fashion friends sent in of their cooler than cool dads.

Not surprisingly, Chris Benz’ dad is kinda smokin’ hot, way hip, and looks to have been shot in Cameron’s garage from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. And a little Kate Lanphear and her pop are in coordinating tanks. Aw!

Of course, it got me thinking about my own dad’s style. (That is indeed him and yours truly in the photo. He rocks that sweet ‘stache to this day…and now it’s totally in again!) You see he’s the one I got my shoe addiction from. The man loves a great pair of shoes. And he’s so much more of a clothes horse than my mom.

My favorite fashion phase was when he got super into madras in the form of shorts, pants, and blazers. Actually, I think I’m going to tell him to bring those back into rotation.

What’s your favorite dad fashion moment…good or bad?

WWWWD's Intellectual Issue

Jun 18, 2009 @ 2:12pm

natasha poly intellectual issue wwwwd.jpgThe latest issue of WWWWD’s out today and it, together with lots and lots of coffee, is helping to cure our hangover.

The Intellectual Issue covers Natasha Poly’s catastrophic runway fall, one which left her with telepathic powers, and researches NASA’s interest in Miuccia Prada’s “obnoxious genius.”

We actually laughed out loud at their sartorial timeline: Jesus invented Birkenstocks in 1 A.D. and in 2004, Gabriel Aubry, “first known human with IQ of 23 able to digest food without use of machines, claims Earth is flat on the set of a Versace shoot.”

But Agyness Deyn’s poem, a sort of ode to the Beatrice Inn in which she wonders, “Where shall drink with Ashley and MK / Weep I shall all night and all day,” might be the most random bit.

Legoland

Jun 18, 2009 @ 12:29pm

decastelbajaclegosunglasses.jpgWhen we were younger, we loved Legos. Making little towns could entertain us for hours— or until our Barbie showed up and totally towered over her supposed home.

And we think that these Jean-Charles de Castelbajac customizable Lego sunglasses that we found on Dazed Digital, are too funny.

The sunglasses are available in red, white, and yellow, and can be customized by adding Lego as you please.

While we think that in some cases, paying to DIY a designer product, like this $5,500 Fendi baguette and this lettered black Roger Vivier bag, can get kind of ridiculous.

That said, we can’t help but want to try to create our own Lego masterpiece. And at just over $150, the shades are quite a bit cheaper than the make-you-own purses.

With Ray Ban offering up their Colorize kit, and items like the One-Dress being sold, we have to ask, do you get nervous at the thought of being left to your own devices and prefer your purchases to be ready-made or are you willing to shell out to DIY your designer goods?

Downtown Pedaling

Jun 17, 2009 @ 4:28pm

PinkBike.jpgWhile the London Topshop is in a tizzy over swine flu, the New York Topshop is giving out gifts!

Well…not exactly, but the store will be loaning out bikes from June 20th to the 27th and as far as we’ve heard, they’re free.

Topshop is showing some love for the city by helping to encourage city slickers to stay fit and have fun. While there probably won’t be a lot of actual commuters standing around at Topshop waiting for a bike to head to work, we’re hoping the New York biking trend will keep on growing to keep our city cleaner (fuel emission wise) and less congested.

We’ve been skeptically and cautiously wondering how easy biking in heels and a dress is for some time now, thanks to Scott, so maybe it’s time to give it a try? But we will definitely be sporting a helmet, and thankfully Topshop will provide you one along with the bike.

In case you needed an excuse to whip out a new (or old) pair of bike shorts

As Seen on the Silver Screen

Jun 16, 2009 @ 12:28pm

marie-antoinette[1].jpgAcross the pond today, Angels The Costumiers are putting up a bevy of costumes from films and television shows at the Bonhams Knightsbridge auction house in London.

The goods include a bullfighter style jacket Johnny Depp wore in The Man Who Cried, and a jumpsuit from the Bond film Moonraker.

How we’d feel about owning something that Johnny Depp once wore aside, we’re now making mental lists of which movie’s costumes we would bid on.

For me, it would definitely be Audrey Hepburn’s dresses and dress suits from Charade, crazy eighties getups from Parker Posey in Party Girl and Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan, and in my ultimate fantasy, Kirsten Dunst’s queenly gowns from Marie Antoinette. Britt’s with me on Marie Antoinette and would also kill for Julianne Moore’s wardrobe from Boogie Nights and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s from Secretary. Abby loves the clothes from either version of The Thomas Crown Affair worn fabulously by Faye Dunaway and Rene Russo, along with some of Gwyneth’s pieces from The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Whose wardrobe is on your wish list?

A Mini-Met?

Jun 15, 2009 @ 12:03pm

model mayhem at the whitney.jpgThe Whitney Art Party’s on Wednesday night and we’ve gotten the first edition of the confirmed guest list.

Starlets and artists will be there in droves, but as far as models go, there’s Coco Rocha, Lydia Hearst, Dree Hemingway, Brooklyn Decker, Lisa Cant, Julie Henderson, Maggie Rizer, Selita Ebanks and Hilary Rhoda.

And of course, we have no idea what to wear, especially since the party’s sponsored by BCBG again which means all of their perfect little bodies will be swathed in Herve bandages with feet tucked into sky high heels. Because sure, no one’s looking at us, but it takes a serious outfit to guarantee we won’t hide in a corner under the weight of being anything less than 5’11 with long blond hair and the perfect Rick Owens leather jacket.

So, should we follow in the footsteps of last year with a long vintage floral number, flat sandals and little effort? Or, is it time to step it up with something a bit smaller and louder? If only we had this in our closet.

Festival of Faces

Jun 15, 2009 @ 11:04am

closeupdrew-barrymore-bonnaroo-music.jpg‘Tis the season of the outdoor music festival, which tends to bring about some very cool, and also some very bizarre fashion choices.

Gwyneth, the Kates (Moss and Bosworth), and Sienna have all perfected fashionably bohemian rock festival garb over the years, throwing in a pair of wellies when the weather demands, or wearing the tiniest of dresses while grooving in the desert at Coachella. Drew Barrymore, on the other hand, we’re less sure about.

Now we usually love Drew and all her fairy dust sensibilities. We’ve even lately embraced some of her colorful beauty choices. This one from Bonnaroo over the weekend (while enjoying a little Bon Iver) is not one of them.

She looks like she just finished playing dress-up with a group of five year-olds. And while we love embracing our childlike innocence as much as the next girl, this just seems to be taking it a bit too far. Really, a feather? Though we will give her credit for picking a rather lovely palette of glittery face paint to work with.

Guessing Game at Gaultier

Jun 12, 2009 @ 10:34am

whos the new aggy.jpgJean Paul Gaultier’s fragrance, Ma Dame, is turning one and the lady is ready to party.

As part of the celebration, the company has made a mini-movie in which they’ve hidden clues about a special guest that Ma Dame has invited to join in the festivities. We’ve watched it like five times in a row and still aren’t sure. It’s in black and white with pops of pink in everything from balloons to an
“x” written in a notebook. There are corsets on dancers and someone calling JPG on an iPhone, amid countless other possible hints.

Watch the video and tell us what you think.

Havaiana Humanity

Jun 11, 2009 @ 2:49pm

Lulu-Guinness_V_11jun09_pr_b.jpg.jpgAfter you have given away few pairs of shoes away, you may want to check out this footwear-charity collaboration.

While Abby is considering forgoing her Havaianas to save her feet, some big names in fashion have created their own versions of the summertime staple.

The sandals are to be auctioned off to benefit charity CLIC Sargent, a charity giving money to young people who have cancer, and their families.

Naomi Campbell, Manolo Blahnik, Matthew Williamson, and Lulu Guinnness (pictured) are just a few of the people adding their special touches (or in Naomi’s case, heels) to these flip flops.

Havaianas is no stranger to a collaboration. In 2004 the company partnered with H.Stern to create a diamond encrusted pair. And while we love diamonds, we love Issa’s polka-dotted pair more!

The shoes are hitting Selfridges window displays on June 15, and will be available for auction on June 26, but for now you can check them out online.

Is it sad that we are checking the cost of flights to London right now so we can check them out in person?

Clean Sweeping for a Cause

Jun 11, 2009 @ 12:33pm

hot pink nick kirkwoods.jpgBefore you balk at giving up your shoes, think of that hot pink pair of heels in the back of your closet that you wore to one party and haven’t touched since. Then, consider a good cause.

PUMA’s partnering with charity Soles4Souls, a charity that donates shoes to 125 countries in need, from June 15 to July 20. They’re asking shoppers to donate any lightly worn shoes at PUMA locations and receive 30% off for new PUMA kicks.

They’re even setting up two massive 10-foot tall donation boxes for people to donate their shoes and snag a pair of Soles4Souls flip-flops with their discount - one in Union Square on June 15 and the other on the Santa Monica Pier on June 23.

We’ve been having trouble closing our closet anyway, so needless to say, we’re in.

Today in Soho

Jun 10, 2009 @ 3:02pm

scott schuman shooting foreign vogue.jpgWe’ve been running around Soho today - interviewing Life Withs and looking at apartments - and there’s major fashion action on this sticky sweaty day.

Scott Schuman’s shooting for a foreign Vogue on Greene Street between Prince and Spring. The models are looking rather goth, one’s even carrying a skull and the other has an umbrella atop her head and Chanel bag in hand. No sign of Garance, though we know she’s in town for tonight’s Women in Style party (which we’re actually really excited for).

Meanwhile, Rachel Zoe’s teetering around. We spotted her leaving Intermix in the widest pair of bell bottoms we’ve ever seen, a cropped patent leather biker jacket and major black frames.

That is all.

Sea of Love

Jun 10, 2009 @ 2:29pm

christina ricci wearing sea.jpgIt wasn’t going to be long before designer Sean Monahan of Sea New York hit our radar. He’s kind of perfect for the current climate — a former Wall Street analyst who ditched his career in finance and turned designer.

He started out dressing his best friends which quickly turned into dressing Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Ricci, Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, Chloe Sevigny, and Alexa Chung. He wanted to create clothes that “make girls smile,” an ethos that whacks the sometimes unbearably heavy gravitas of fashion across the head.

Stocked by Barneys and Milk, his clothes are happy, lighthearted and full of frills, pretty prints and easy to wear dresses so it’s no wonder an army of models are also fans. His clothes kind of embody the “off-duty model” look.

Meanwhile, he’s quietly adding some big names to his design team. Monica Paolini, his best friend, muse and former design director at Betsy Johnson and Jill Stuart, is now on board as well as Emilie Roy of Dior.

There could be perhaps no two houses as misaligned as Betsy Johnson and Dior, so it will be interesting to see what the two new creative forces come up with.

As long as it stays light and fresh, we’re pretty sure we’ll love it.
