Reader Clarke emailed us this morning, “Hope you find this interesting!”
Cluelessand Miu Miu? Like, duh.
While sifting through Miu Miu’s Pre-Fall 2010 collection, he found Lindsey Wixson channeling Cher Horowitz circa 1995. Yellow plaid jacket? Check. Yellow plaid mini skirt? Check. White thigh highs tucked into loafers? Check.
She’s traded in the cell phone for a furry hood, but we think Cher would approve.
It seems like our obsession with finding the most flattering, yet still unique, shade of nail polish heats up right before every fashion week.
Last night at our local salon, we test-drove Essie’s new Tart Deco (a coral, peachy color) on our fingers and Chinchilly (a matte pewter) on our toes.
We like both, but there are so many great colors to choose from, whether it’s the newest range from Essie or the latest shade from Rescue. Here are a few others we like:
There’s too much going on and we’ve lost our glue gun under the bed. But more importantly, we’ve fallen in love with PS. I Made This.
Erika Domesek’s does a DIY so much better than we ever could, whether she’s whipping up Tom Binns-inspired collars or Louis Vuitton-like bows - she’s a master of arts & crafts.
Helmut Lang thinks so, too (the brand, not the man) and they’ve asked her to hold a DIY party at Bloomingdales next week. She’s already built necklaces and bracelets from their denim, leather and jersey to accessorize the 59th Street windows and on Wednesday, February 3rd, she’ll show you how.
Shopping in London used to mean Topshop, now it means cheap vintage and Nicholas Kirkwoods.
You can find his brilliant shoes at Seven New York, but only a few at a time — you can walk into Browns or Liberty and find piles.
And for the Summer of Love/Liberty celebration of Carnaby Street’s 50th anniversary, Kirkwood’s taken two of their signature floral prints, the Bounty (from the 1980s) and the Santa Maria (from a popular 90s tea dress), and covered his signature rock and roll heels with the feminine prints.
The buckled shoe comes stacked on an angular platform and five inch heel, at left, and lands in stores at the end of May.
In honor of the 50th we expect loads of one off florals — Liberty print dino bags from Giles? Floral sundresses from Stella? Headbands from Luella? We’d fly to London just for that.
For glossy mag editors in need of assistance on their next issue’s photo credits, the Diamond Information Center has released a list of the type and brand of diamond almost every major star wore to Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.
We’re most envious of nominee Carey Mulligan’s diamond earrings, diamond bracelet, pear-shaped diamond ring and 19th century serpent brooch, all from Fred Leighton. Of course, her Lanvin dress wasn’t an eyesore, either.
Other standouts included Kate Hudson’s vintage Cartier briolette and baguette diamond drop earrings as well as Vera Farmiga’s diamond cluster earrings from Chanel fine jewelry.
Lara Stone is getting married, and while we wait with bated breath to see the dress she dons, we thought we’d have a little fun and play stylist for the afternoon.
We’ve picked out a few things we’d love to see her wear down the aisle. Some are practical, but most are not.
In reality, she’ll most likely wear something custom-made, and probably by Karl. Regardless, we can’t wait to see what she does choose.
The fashion troops have rallied this past week for one Haiti benefit after another.
Last weekend, a couple of Teen Vogue-ers, Sophomore’s Chrissie Miller and DJ’s Harley & Cassie threw a benefit at the Soho Grand, it raised $8,000. Last night everyone popped into the Thompson LES and tonight the movement migrates to Brooklyn.
A handful of the cute photographers from COACD’s recent calendar have teamed up for tonight’s party at KC/DC (90 North 11th St. between Berry & Wythe) from 9 to 12. Donations are mandatory, but they don’t have to be monetary — you can donate clothes, supplies or dollars.
Meanwhile, Kooba and HankyPanky will donate 15% of their online sales to Haiti’s relief efforts and Daniel Saynt, the editor of Fashionindie, is auctioning off his Fashion Week tickets.
And last, but not least, Inven.tory’s accepting clothing donations on behalf of the Rural Haiti Relief Center at their store (237 Lafayette Street). Email Kettie@RuralHaitiProject.org for a full list of acceptable donations.
Rare Vintage, a high end vintage boutique on the Upper East Side, is giving away one particularly awesome vintage dress per month for the duration of 2010.
To kick things off, owner Juliana Cairone’s chosen the brightly colored Oscar De La Renta column at left.
Angie Harmon wore it to an Oscar party in 2008, but it’s a tropical print we’d wear now (or in a few months).
There are two ways to win, become a fan of Rare Vintage on Facebook, or email win@rarevintage.com.
Next month’s dress is YSL and Juliana says, “Today I bought an unbelievable black, lacy Galanos cocktail dress…”
Kensington Palace is about to become the new Haunted House, except its ghosts get to wear Vivienne Westwood.
One of Britain’s independent charities, Historic Royal Palaces, has pledged £12 million to transform the palace into The Enchanted Palace by June of 2012. They’ve enlisted a theatre company, Wildworks, to stage performances throughout the residence.
Meanwhile, each stateroom will be made over by a different designer: Aminaka Wilmont’s building a dress of tears for Queen Mary’s Bedchamber, Stephen Jones is producing hats for the collection of 18th century busts in the privvy chamber, Vivienne Westwood’s whipping up a dress inspired by Princess Charlotte for the King’s grand staircase and William Tempest is in charge of interpreting a period dress into something avant-garde for Queen Victoria’s bedroom. Illustrator and set designer Echo Morgan will work on the walls and the presentation.
The bad news is it won’t be up in time for Fashion Week, but the good news is that the exhibition will still be up by time the next one rolls around.
Last year we outlined our Oscar dream dresses. Not for us, but for our favorite nominees.
This year, we’re starting awards season on time with this weekend’s Golden Globes.
We’ve picked the dresses we wish they’d wear, but followed up with more realistic options. As the wise Rachel Zoe has taught us, the US Weekly-reading, Best-Dressed-Voting, American public doesn’t always favor fashion forward dresses.
Carey Mulligan’s kicking things off. We’re shocked no one’s worn this Proenza mini-dress. The petite Miss Mulligan’s the perfect candidate with her tiny frame, pale skin, and pixie cut. But if it’s still too cold for cut outs, this Givenchy will be spectacular. Yes, it’s still fashion forward, but it’s basically made for Carey. Like Kate says, “It’s perfect, nipples and all.”
Taylor Momsen signed with IMG two years ago, but aside from her Crash editorial and a Teen Vogue cover, she hasn’t done much.
Rumor had it she’d front The Pretty Reckless in custom Jen Kao, though it never materialized and those big campaign whispers? Well yes, her ads for New Look should debut later this year.
But for one day only, today, she’s the face of Victoria’s Secret Soho.
If you buy their new fragrance, Love Rocks, from 6pm to 7:30pm at 555 Broadway, you’ll get a signed picture of Jenny Humphrey and her autograph (presumably anywhere you like).
This Sunday, January 10th, is New York’s official No Pants subway ride.
Thank god!
If you’ve been storing your sequin Philip Lim hot pants in the back of your closet or your Vivienne Westwood bloomers in the bottom drawer of your bureau or waiting to re-wear your brilliant Lady Gaga Halloween costume, now’s the chance to wear your teeniest tiniest pants (or lack of) in front of the whole world - or at least Manhattan’s subway population.
The ride is sponsored by Improv Everywhere and the website warns, “DO NOT SHOW UP UNLESS YOU PLAN TO TAKE YOUR PANTS OFF.**”
The ride starts at 3pm and you can find your closest subway station here.
Everyone who works in fashion knows that when it comes to this industry, there’s an abundance of girls and gays and a dearth of straight men.
Well casting director Douglas Perrett — of COACD fame — decided to round-up his picks of the industry’s hottest straight men and shoot them for what he’s dubbed a “malendar”. Genius.
Perrett, along with creative director David Covell, designed the limited edition 2010 calendar. Photographed by Kathy Lo, there are 13 pin-ups in all.
