We went to 20+ shows and presentations during the five days of London fashion week, where we saw a lot of quirky, original, and interesting fashion. London is not afraid to be kitschy, and one show invitation in particular caught our attention. Welsh milliner Robyn Coles had a presentation and here’s why it piqued our interest:

And how better to ensure the fashionista’s focus rests solely on these stunning creations with no danger of distraction by scarves, sashes or shirts? Every model will be nude.

Because boobs wouldn’t be distracting at all. Anyway, because of a packed schedule we had to miss the show, but caught up with Coles via email afterwards. Here’s what she had to say about using naked models to showcase her hats: Read more »

Max Mara RF12 0282

When you think of Max Mara, you think of minimalism and camel coats. It’s true the brand’s signature clean lines were still there for fall, and yes, there were a number of camel coats, but the brand also exhibited a more playful and adorned aesthetic than seasons passed–a mix we’d call ’60s swinger meets Oliver Twist.

Mixed in among the minimalist staples were workwear-inspired pieces like an olive green jumpsuit or an overalls dress with leather straps. Newsboy caps topped many of the looks in matching colors and when paired with the more rugged outfits the effect was a sort of modern, feminine, Oliver Twist. However when the caps were matched with sleeker looks like a body fitting dress or a turtleneck sweater the aesthetic reminded us more of a 60s mod girl– and a little bit of Victoria Beckham‘s spring collection for that matter.

Ferretti RF12 8489

MILAN–Alberta Ferretti is surely best loved for her dresses. And it’s easy to see why: The designer manages to make gowns that are both striking and subtle at the same time, which is certainly no easy feat.

For Fall 2012, it was this expert dressmaking skill that the designer was clearly intent on showcasing. Gown after sumptuous gown walked the runway, all expertly crafted and ridiculously elegant but without being showy in the least. There were a number of gorgeous black frocks–some with swishy micro-pleats, others done up in leather and, still others embellished with black beads and sparkly fringe. Where there was color it was bold and rich (think: royal purple, bright red and sapphire) and the slinky gowns stood out all the more for it.

Many of the dresses had panels in contrasting fabrics:

Gucci Fall 2012: Velvet Underground

Wednesday, Feb 22, 2012 / 5:38 PM

MILAN–I can think of no better introduction to Milan Fashion Week than with Gucci’s show. Set at a storied building on the Piazza Oberdan, a 15 minute walk from my hotel, it was the perfect antidote to my case of jet lag.

Inside the venue guests were treated to flutes of champagne beneath a canopy of flowers. The catwalk’s floor was done up in a thick, plushy purple carpet and the walls were, of course, mirrored. The lighting was dim so that the whole vibe was more swank night club than runway show.

The carpet, it turns out, was a promise of what was to come–a moody purpley/maroon featured heavily in the collection as did plushy textures like fur, velvet, velvet and more velvet. Did we mention velvet? There was so much of the stuff, we couldn’t help but think how much George Costanza, who famously said he would drape himself in the fabric, would’ve loved the collection. Meadham Kirchhoff Fall 2012: Dazzling Disco Inferno

Wednesday, Feb 22, 2012 / 1:08 PM

LONDON–The crowd at Meadham Kirchhoff looks a lot different than at your average fashion show. You see very few Chanel bags–and quite a few plastic dresses, rainbow hair, and thrifted shoes. This show was a great, ridiculous way to end London fashion week on a happy high note.

Upon walking into the space, it wasn’t difficult to figure out the theme: Disco. Two rainbow paneled floors were added to the runway, tinsel and glitter covered every surface, and a rainbow of lights bounced off every wall. So I wasn’t exactly expecting neutrals, not that you ever do at a Meadham Kirchhoff show. Read more »

Ilincic RF12 1377

The setting for the Roksanda Ilincic show was unabashedly English–a series of small, elegant drawing rooms (which were connected by a runway) made it feel very intimate and a throwback to another era. All I needed was a tea trolley. But the clothes were definitely of this day and age.

Think slouchy “sweat pants” and hoodies made of cashmere.
