Let Hedi Objectify You!

Mar 26, 2008 @ 12:48pm

By Hedi Slimane Want to be Hedi Slimane's next piece of meat?

Go to V Magazine's website.

They may have lost their Editor-in-Chief to Interview, but they've gained a sequel to their wildly successful modeling contest, V A Model. Their first winner, Amanda Laine, got a shoot with Mario Testino, a contract with Supreme, and the opening slots at McQueen and Miu Miu (what?!). She also closed Louis Vuitton (double what?!).

Now V opens their contest to boys. If you win, you'll score the cover of V Man (which recently had Brad Pitt as its star), plus a photo shoot with Hedi Slimane and a contract with Ford Models.

Clearly, these stakes are huge, so if you think you look like Ashton Kutcher in his pre-Demi days, zoom on over and good luck!

LeBron's No Andre J, But We Love Him Anyway

Mar 14, 2008 @ 2:55pm

Gisele LeBron Vogue Cover.jpgOur initial reaction to the news that Gisele "The Legs" Bündchen would share a Vogue cover with NBA powerhouse LeBron James: "Hold up! A black, male, athlete, and a model? Way to go Anna!"

But then we saw the cover, and we're a little miffed.

It shows personality, sure, but the whole "Me, Tarzan. You, Jane," vibe doesn't sit well with the french fries we had for lunch.

We would have loved a tipoff with LeBron vs. Gisele. Or even a statuesque depiction of their exquisite physiques a la The David meets Aphrodite. After all, it is the Shape Issue.

And when you compare it to the stately presentation of George Clooney and Richard Gere on previous covers, well, where's the fashion?

It is semi-refreshing. Or different, at the least.

The April issue of W Magazine features a 60 page photo essay on New Orleans shot by Bruce Weber.

We're dying to see the whole spread - but we'll have to make do with this adorable video of Karen Elson swaying to Louisiana jazz in a very vintage living room.

The video's called "Karen's Boogie"; in it, she gracefully dances in the highest, most beautiful heels like only a supermodel can.

If we could only look this cool dancing around our apartment.

Interview Wants to Interview You

Mar 10, 2008 @ 2:56pm

marilyn andy interview.jpgHere's your chance to get in on the new Interview - the fashion department is looking for interns!

You will:

1. Catalog tons of clothes in the library of the Astor building at Broadway and Prince - so you can slave in style.

2. Get to know tons of publicists via e-mail when you hound them for fashion credits for all spreads.

3. Tag the issues for monthly mail-outs.

4. Assist on shoots.

5. Arrange look books in Annabel Tollman's office.

6. And, if they like you, help with market work, try on samples and think of heds and deks.

Send resumes (one page, seriously) and cover letters (no more than two small paragraphs, and in the same attachment as the resume, seriously) to Sydney Wasserman at SWasserman@Brantpub.com.

PS. Like all fashion internships, this one is unpaid, but they do reimburse you for your Metro card.

Daily Candy's Print Tint

Mar 06, 2008 @ 12:15pm

womandog.jpg Those following the fashion media industry might want to take note:

Daily Candy, the website that struck '90s gold with their 24-hour shopping updates, is sort of making a magazine.

Called Daily Candy dossier, it's already been released, but will get a big boost this week during L.A. Fashion Week, where (at least according to press releases) the tiny magazine will get distributed.

The idea is interesting for two reasons:

1. It follows Fashion Wire Daily and IQONS in releasing a print magazine well after its online presence is established.

2. It's a leaflet that will only distribute during Fashion Weeks, competing with The Daily (no candy) in New York, The Daily Rubbish (also no candy) in London, and also WWD for industry attention during those big and editor-saturated events.

Good move? Odd move? And why aren't they giving away actual candy with it?!

[Editor's Note, 3/7: It turns out Daily Candy's print edition is still a far-off in the future idea - but still check out their site for every other second updates during LA Fashion Week.]

Posh and Vogue

Mar 06, 2008 @ 10:37am

voguecoverapr081d2cb0ik7.jpg ShowStudio may take us behind-the-scenes at their Kate Moss shoots, but there's one project they kept totally secret:

Victoria Beckham's Vogue UK shoot, which hits London stands right now.

The photographs were shot by Nick Knight, and look like a pop album leaflet -

Shiny, pink, and steeped in 10 tons of lip gloss.

We're not sure what Ms. Beckham actually has to say in the issue, but it'll be a riot to flip through the photos of Marc Jacobs' latest face - there are thirteen pages of Posh photos inside.

Stay tuned for a full gallery; for now, here's the shiny shiny cover, sent by UK reader Sarah.

Karlsbad

Mar 05, 2008 @ 9:33am

Karl cover Prestige.jpgKarl Lagerfeld recently granted a cover story of himself to Hong Kong glossy Prestige.

Some choice quotes:

"When people talk about the good old days, I say to people, 'It's not the days that are old, it's you that's old.' I hate the good old days. What is important is that today is good."

"Love is a subject I don't analyze publicly, love is only an interesting subject when it's beyond. When it's down to earth, it ceases to become interesting. It's a very dangerous subject."

"I hate all children."

"In the old days there was luxury and no market. Today there is all market and no luxury."

"I consider myself a kind of Ferrari, so I take care of myself."

And after the writer, Stephen Short, questioned Karl about Vlada, whom Karl had been photographing at the beginning of the interview, Karl gave perhaps the most Karl-like sound bite of all:

"Yes, new Russian girls are like this. But this is a subject I won’t discuss. You know why? In France, there are a large percentage of young girls who are overweight and less than one percent are skinny. So let’s talk about the 25 percent who have a weight problem, or are overweight. We don’t need to discuss the less than one percent. Anorexia is nothing to do with fashion. These Russian girls are so young. Chinese ones are skinny, too, and bony. I don’t think it’s a subject to discuss. And in today’s world, many people take drugs, not only models, hmm? It’s an unnecessary subject. Let’s talk about the fat ones."

Also of note: Karl gave Short one of the little action figures of himself as a gift.

We know some of this might be hard to believe, so we suggest reading the interview in full for yourselves.
