Italian Vogue Says 'Black is Beautiful' !
Apr 23, 2008 @ 4:34pm
This just in from a source:
Steven Meisel has just shot an entire issue of Vogue Italia with all black models, hoping that other issues of Vogue start to diversify their own portfolios.
Apparently, all of the photo shoots have already happened, as model bookers at various agencies have been contacted and sourced for new, beautiful, not-white girls -- and now they're twittering about how cool the issue will be.
No word on when the issue will hit stands or who's on the cover (Jourdan Dunn? Chanel Iman?), but whatever:
We don't really report the news over here. We just break it wide open.
xoxo.
Being Ethical Gets Cute
Apr 17, 2008 @ 3:45pm
We've always wished Teen Vogue had an uber eco-conscious fraternal twin sister who would be the founding member of her school's Ethical Fashion Club, and tote around Naomi Klein's No Logo as her boldest accessory.
Ok, so not really, but we do think BBC's new online magazine Thread. is pretty cool, and fills a void we didn't know we had.
The shoots are styled entirely with clothing that fits the magazine's "Fashion Without Victim" tagline without looking extra crunchy.
Everything in the magazine must be at least one of the following:
- Made and traded sustainably
- Made of sustainable materials
- Recycled or vintage
As a part of the launch, on April 22, BBC Three will also air a four-part series called Blood, Sweat and T-shirts that sends six "fashion addicts" to experience life working in India's cotton mills. We think it's an excellent idea, so here's to hoping Thread's model selection improves a bit, and that the sentiment echoes with youth across the Atlantic.
Maybe next month's issue can feature Alexa Chung visiting real sweatshops in India rather than setting up her faux sweat shops in London.

Marc is a Stylist, Too
Apr 10, 2008 @ 9:30am
When we found out that one of our favorite American magazines would include a shoot styled by Marc, we knew we had to get our hands on the images right away, and share.
Behold: This weekend's T:Style includes a shoot of both Marc and Elodie (Elodie Bouchez, the French actress, not Elodie, Hills non-actress - whatever happened to her anyway?) wearing mostly Marc designed duds.
We kind of love it, and we knew you would, too.
The issue hits stands April 13, and will include an interview with Emily Blunt, which we also have in our possession. Just say the word and we will post it immediately.
Model Love at ELLE
Apr 09, 2008 @ 9:00am
The upcoming May ELLE with Madonna on the cover includes more than just fun pictures of the Material Girl gyrating for the camera.
It has something even better - way more models than usual.
In fact, the new issue seems to be so high on model love, that they even have this image of Irina and Freja, still dressed from the Earth Pledge show, in a bit of a lip lock.
Our friends at ELLE sent over a high res image of the shot, just especially for our reader friends.
How's that for a Wednesday morning treat?
Thanks, ELLE!
Explain: Cover Headlines
Apr 04, 2008 @ 2:23pm
We've been talking about it for a while, and we've come to this conclusion: We hate cover headlines.
They aim to say everything, but really, say nothing at all. We get that it's an advertising thing for all of those non-subscribers out there, but shouldn't the cover girl be enough?
We're reminded of this whenever we find ourselves envious of most foreign fashion covers, especially the latest Vogue Italia with a magical Natalia covered by only one (very appropriate) word: ICON. Now, that says it all.
People already try to knock us for reading fashion magazines as part of our literary diet, and it doesn't help our case when our eyes are peeking over the top of a cover that reads "DIY Dermatology" "The Junk Food Diet," and "Space-Age Fitness" (all US Vogue headlines, mind you, but they're not the only culprits).
We wish covers would return to the days of Dali art - couldn't magazines at least go the way of Bazaar and send cover line-less editions to subscribers?
They clutter and confuse what should be the best photo of the entire edition. But phrases like "plastic surgery" sort of kill the glamour buzz.
What do you guys think?

Oh, Make Me Madonna
Apr 03, 2008 @ 9:30am
ELLE sent over this behind-the-scenes video of Madonna's May cover shoot.
Check it out if you want to hear 4 Minutes, watch Madge work a feather boa or round up your office mates to decide for yourselves if she looks as amazing on film as in the photos (our verdict is Yes.)
Which pretty much beats any other way to start a Thursday morning, no?
