Can China Save Fashion Magazines?

Can China Save Fashion Magazines?

While print publishing’s had a tough time in the states and in many parts of the world over the past few years, the magazine industry in China is apparently booming. As we already know, China has become a huge market for luxury fashion, but not everyone is just buying the clothes. According to a piece in the Times this past weekend, young Chinese women are spending huge chunks of their incomes on Chinese versions of Western fashion glossies such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, etc. They’re obsessed. And Western publishing houses like Hearst are making bank.

Fashion labels are putting even more money into advertising in China than in the states and these glossies practically have more ad pages than they know what to do with. Both Cosmopolitan and Elle have to publish twice monthly over there because one would be too thick to print and Vogue added four extra issues per year. So, is this it? Is China the antidote to print’s decline here in the west?

The thing is, these publishers’ ability to make money has little to do with their publications’ quality or popularity.

Hearst Fashion Titles Set September Issue Records–But How Will Condé Nast Fare?

We alread know the covers, but how thick are this year’s all-important September issues going to be?

Pretty thick. Just when we thought print was dying, magazines are seeing an increase in ad pages, especially in fashion and beauty. Things are looking particularly good for Hearst, whose relatively recent acquisition, Elle, will debut Hearst’s largest September issue of all time. The fashion title will have 400 ad pages (annoying for us, but good for publishing!), up 14% from last year.

Clearly Elle‘s doing well over at Hearst–this news comes on the heels of four consecutive record-breaking issues in terms of ad pages. Fellow Hearst titles Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire were not exempt from the fashion and beauty ad page increase: the former increased by 16.6% to 360 pages, while the latter went up 23% to 237 pages. It’s Marie Claire’s largest issue ever.

Anonymous Retoucher Says ’100 percent’ of Fashion Images Have Been Altered, Calls Beauty Ads the ‘Biggest Lie of All’

In a world where models are getting their limbs cut off left-right-and-center, and magazines are using photoshop to frankenstein their celeb covers, it’s no secret that a lot of retouching goes on these days. All you need to do is open any magazine–or look at any beauty ad–for proof. But how much retouching actually gets Read more →

Coco Rocha To Magazine ‘Photoshop Guys’: Quit Cutting Off Models’ Limbs!

Is it just us or have magazines been making a lot of flubs recently? First Doutzen Kroes lost her leg in a botched photoshop job, then Natasha Poly’s arm suffered a similar fate on the cover of Vogue Russia. And most recently, Glamour ran a picture of long-time deceased model Daul Kim in its August issue.

Coco Rocha seems to have noticed that things have gotten a little out-of-hand too–particularly in the photoshop department. The always-outspoken supermodel took to Twitter to implore magazines to, you know, actually pay attention when they’re doctoring fashion editorials:
