Modeling and modesty are two words that seem mutually exclusive, but a Muslim fashion designer in New York City is trying to change that. A new agency for Muslim models, called Underwraps, is launching next week during New York Fashion Week. Its goal? To prove that models can be gorgeous, stylish, and yet still maintain their religious beliefs.

Nailah Lymus is an American-born Muslim whose parents converted to Islam before she was born. She adheres to the modesty tenets of the religion, which require that clothes be loose enough so as not to reveal your shape, and that basically the only body parts that can be visible are your face, hands and feet. Sound challenging? It doesn’t have to be. I chatted with Lymus this week about her background, Muslims in fashion, and her plans to launch a modeling agency.

The supermodels return: Yesterday it was Linda Evangelista in Love, and today it’s Helena Christensen in Reeboks…and little else. The 43-year-old super gives Karlie Kloss a (leggy) run for her money in a bandage bodysuit and sneakers. Christensen was in a Reebok ad back in 2010, where she wore absolutely nothing except sneakers and a growl, so this ad is tame by comparison. Read more »

We’ve already seen a sneak preview of Rachel Zoe as a vampire and Kate Moss and Lara Stone as flowery cats, but now we know who covers Love issue 7: one of the original supers, Linda Evangelista. Shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and styled by Katie Grand, the pics were inspired by punk artist Jamie Reid. The cover proclaims “After Taste: Celebrating the end of elegance with Linda Evangelista,” but we’d argue that she looks pretty elegant anyway, smeared lipstick and all. Read more »

Remember that gorgeous editorial in Vogue’s December issue featuring Karlie Kloss and Eddie Redmayne as “a couple of sinners on Ibiza—she, wearing printed resortwear generating plenty of heat; he, trying hard to keep his cool.” The spread, titled “Temptation Island” and lensed by Mario Testino, seems to have spawned a real life romance. Here at Fashionista, Tom Brady is generally known as “that football player who’s married to Gisele.” This Sunday she’ll be a good wife and support her husband as he plays in the Super Bowl against the New York Giants. To help in his quest for a Super Bowl ring (the fact that there’s a ring involved makes us slightly more interested in the game), Gisele is using her pull to enlist the help of a pretty powerful guy: God.

The New York Post somehow got its hands on an email that Gisele sent to friends and family, and made it their COVER story:

Show Packages: think of them as baseball cards for the fashion set. For casting directors, they’re pertinent to their jobs in the days leading up to Fashion Week, but for the rest of us… well, they’re another excuse to ogle pretty faces, and take a look at who will be gracing the runways during the upcoming week. The biggest agencies are rolling out their strongest lineups this season…and while some present rather basic packages featuring simple photos of their models, there are a few that take creative license in the best way.

I’m 5’5” and a size 6, with a not-insignificant ass. I don’t see many models out there who look like me. In fact, very few women–no matter what their sizes–probably see themselves reflected in the ads we’re bombarded with every single day. There seem to be two distinct types of models–the traditional beanpole “straight size” fashion model, and the zaftig hourglass on the plus-size end of the spectrum.

When these two worlds collide, as they did recently in a controversial editorial that appeared in the online publication, PLUS Model Magazine (wherein a plus-size and straight size model were shown naked and embracing), one gets a sense of how emotionally charged this issue can be. Women on both sides of the scale’s needle feel attacked for being too big or too small. But what about those who fall somewhere in between?

“I feel like I should be asking you about yourself!” 24-year-old model Myla Dalbesio says to me mid-interview over sugar snap peas at The Smile on Bond St.

Dalbesio is a rising star on Ford’s illustrious plus board (that’s the same board that reps Crystal Renn, Candice Huffine and Marquita Pring). When she walked into Ford, Gary Dakin, who heads up the plus board there, proclaimed her the next Crystal Renn. But as you can gather from her guilt over the necessary one-sidedness of an interview, the industry she’s worked in for the past four years hasn’t squelched her earnest midwestern niceness.

But don’t think that this gorgeous model, who you’ll be seeing in a Dazed and Confused spread soon, is all sugary sweetness. Or that she’s just a model. She’s also an envelope-pushing performance artist, whose last piece titled “Young Money”–in which she dressed up like a stripper, covered herself in fake tanner and champagne, and stared down gallery goers, all while topless–got written up by the Times.

We reassured Delbesio that she didn’t need to ask us about ourselves (not that exciting, really), and we chatted about how she became a model, the state of the ‘plus size’ modeling world (she’d rather do away with the phrase ‘plus size’ completely), and how it all inspires her performance art.

British fashion sites have been buzzing about a new face who is poised to take the modeling world by storm–some going as far as suggesting she may be the next Kate Moss. And at 11 years old, she’s one of the young ones. She also happens to be the offspring of rock royalty–and really, really pretty. We mentioned her in our news roundup yesterday, but here are some more details.

Anais Gallagher, who turns twelve in a couple of weeks, is the progeny of former Oasis member Noel Gallagher and his ex-wife Meg Matthews. It was Matthews’ proud tweet of a Mario Testino-lensed photo of her daughter that sent everyone into Anais Gallagher obsession. In fact, she tweeted the same photo twice in one day, which may be a little stage mom-ish, but we can hardly blame her–the photo (above) is gorge.

Models–their size, their age, even their gender–are provoking a lot of polarizing discussion lately. And plus-size model advocates (and their “real-woman” counterparts) are adding food for thought–or fuel to the fire, depending on your perspective. In its January issue, Plus Model Magazine just published an editorial lensed by Victoria Janashvili and featuring plus-size model Katya Zharkova. In it, Katya, who is totally naked, is surrounded by various facts and figures about size and models. Read more »

Agyness Deyn, like so many models before her, is trying to make the jump from modeling to acting. And it looks like she’s doing it successfully. After a turn as Aphrodite in Clash of the Titans, we reported back in May that she landed the role of Flo the stripper in a remake of a 1996 film called Pusher. Read more »

New mom Beyoncé isn’t the only Knowles making headlines today. Blue Ivy Carter’s aunt Solange has just opened the door to a new chapter in her own life: a modeling career. Next Models has confirmed to us that they’ve recently signed the musician/actress/dj/fashion darling, who Vogue UK is touting as the “Next Big Thing.”

The news isn’t exactly surprising. Solange has been a bit of a fixture in both fashion and beauty industries lately–attending runway shows, djing fashion parties, and becoming a Rimmel spokesperson. She’s also modeled for Armani Jeans and her mother and sister’s line House of Dereon.
