Amanda Brooks surprised everyone a few weeks ago by abruptly leaving her position as fashion director at Barneys to relocate to England to “pursue other opportunities.” She’s since resurfaced on a farm in the UK and written a flurry of new blog posts, so we’re assuming she’s content.

But what about fashion director-less Barneys?

After all the buzz about bloggers replacing America’s Next Top Model long-standing cast members (who were let go a month ago), the show has finally announced the new additions to the team, and there’s not a blogger in sight.

Yesterday, we learned, thanks to a mini Twitter rampage by Kelly Cutrone, that one of her former assistants had stolen money from her company People’s Revolution and would soon pay the price. Kelly called us yesterday and now we know a little bit more about Kelly vs. the thieving ex-assistant.

First of all, she confirmed that the culprit is who we thought it was: the person she directed this tweet to, Brunson Stafford. He worked for Kelly for only a few months and was fired during this past fashion week. And he’s been methodically stealing money from her for the past several months.

NBC’s potentially game-changing (though not so loved by industry people) new fashion competition show Fashion Star, which focuses a bit more on business and salability than design, crowned its first winner Tuesday night: Kara Laricks!

If you don’t watch the show, or stopped after the first few episodes because of the backup dancers and motorcycles, Laricks was the New York-based female designer known for her edgy, slightly avant-garde designs. And we like her. She won $6 million in orders for capsule collections at Macy’s, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue stores–all of which you can buy now.

We stopped by H&M’s fifth avenue flagship yesterday to see the collection and chat with Laricks and H&M “buyer” Nicole Christie, who thinks Laricks won because she had “the freshest design perspective,” which they could see even before the show when they were interviewing designers.

We love Alber Elbaz–the Lanvin designer is one of the rare fashion people who somehow seems to stay grounded and maintain a healthy perspective on everything. In an industry with a lot of big egos, he’s humble and self-deprecating–maybe to a fault, as a new Times profile by Eric Wilson reveals.

Wilson at least makes it clear that Elbaz, whose “tendency to put himself beneath others can be to a fault,” is uncomfortable in the spotlight and with the shifting focuses of the fashion industry:

The 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival is in full swing and the eleven-day event has been super stylish (with some weird moments thrown in) so far.

Cannes always has one of the best red carpets–high glamor plus the risks that you’d never see at the Oscars. From Diane Kruger‘s doubly flawless red carpet appearances, to Jane Fonda‘s age-defying bod, the fashions have hit all the right notes–so far anyway.

And the best part is, we still have ten more days of glamorous red carpet appearances to look forward to. We’ll be updating them here, so keep checking back.

The CW has released a few more promotional photos from The Carrie Diaries now that it has been officially picked up. And it looks like costume designer Eric Daman is really committing to an over-the-top ’80s look for AnnaSophia Robb, who plays young Carrie Bradshaw. Vulture is reporting that the Sex and the City prequel won’t air until January, when Gossip Girl (which Daman also does the costumes for) ends for good (tear).

Need a night of cool culture for a good cause? The Museum of Art and Design’s (MAD) Young Patrons Gala can always be counted on to provide a night of fun without the usual stuffiness of more traditional museum benefit parties.

This year’s fete has been dubbed the LED Ball, and the glowy theme will be carried out through the whole museum–from a video installation on the outside of the building to fantastical lit-up exhibits inside. The soiree will be co-chaired by New York Ranger and former Vogue intern Sean Avery, Nate Berkus and designer Dror Benshetrit. You may also run into Stacey Bendet, Chris Benz, Andrew Bevan, Derek Blasberg, and Leigh Lezark, who are among the many notables on the Hosting Committee.

Updated: Carine Roitfeld is a Grandma!

Wednesday, May 16, 2012 / 8:08 PM

Julia Restoin-Roitfeld had her baby, according to a tweet from the always-in-the-know Derek Blasberg. “Congratulations to proud Momma @RestoinRJulia! (And thus, the chicest grannie ever: Carine Roitfeld!) Can’t wait to meet the beautiful baby!” he wrote. Which means, of course, that Carine Roitfeld, she of the pencil skirts and stilettos and porn-chic-ness, is a grandmother. Just don’t expect her to answer to grandma (or grannie). She reportedly would like to be called “Madame.”

Cue the baby Givenchy…

Mark Zuckerberg is having quite a month. The Father of Facebook just turned 28, bought out Instagram for $1 billion and is now facing the most lucrative point in his career: Going IPO on Friday. We’d offer him a congratulatory “poke” but sadly, that option’s no longer available. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the IPO acronym, it stands for Initial Public Offering– meaning that the company will finally be open to stock holders where the likes of Wall Street—-and even you!—- can purchase a part of the social media company.

But with the estimated $100 billion that’s supposedly coming his way, we’re wondering whether the Harvard dropout will invest in a new wardrobe. Will he finally change out of his usual uniform consisting of dowdy college hoodies, sweat-drenched Adidas shower flip flops, and tattered baggy jeans, into something more uh, dapper? Better yet, the question posed is this: Can all the money in the world transform someone from HTML geek to sartorial chic? Fashionistas can only hope!

To give him an extra boost, we’ve enlisted the help of several fashion experts from designers like Carlos Campos, Alan Eckstein from Timo Weiland and Simon Kneen of Banana Republic, to editors from GQ and Esquire, to buyers and the likes to see what kind of advice they’d shed onto Silicon Valley’s hottest star. And regardless of whether he takes our suggestions or not (note to Marky Mark: you really, really should!), happy IPO Day! We’d definitely like to send you a congratulatory poke soon—- this time, live and in-person.

The First Eighteen: Parsons MFA Fashion Design & Society Exhibition Hosted by Donna Karan and Joanna Coles

Following a blowout celebration for their bachelor program’s senior class earlier this month, Parsons celebrated their MFA graduates on Monday in a raw space deep inside New York’s garment district. Each of the eighteen thesis collections on display were painstakingly detailed, some resembling pleated confections, and others jigsaw puzzles of reworked vintage–they were entirely unique.

“Imagine the best of the bachelors program and then give them two years with everything Parsons has to offer and everything New York has to offer. It’s an intense incubator for talent,” said Parson’s dean of fashion, Simon Collins.
