Why Fashion Videos Are Increasing In Popularity (Plus the Top 10 Most Viewed Fashion Videos of All Time)

Why Fashion Videos Are Increasing In Popularity (Plus the Top 10 Most Viewed Fashion Videos of All Time)

From Lanvin’s goofy dancing, Agent Provocateur‘s hilarious/super sexy/scary zombie movie and, most recently, Versace for H&M‘s elaborate (and creepy) doll house, you’ve probably noticed by now that video is where it’s at right now. To be sure, there’s hardly an ad campaign or new collaboration announced without a quirky video or at least some artfully editing behind-the-scenes b-roll to go along with it.

So what’s with the uptick in fashion flicks? In a word, YouTube. A report in Mashable today shows that video sharing site usage has grown exponentially since 2006 when just 33% of internet users visited a video sharing site. Now it’s 71%. Three billion videos are viewed each day on YouTube, and the site ratchets up around 800 million unique visitors each month. Wow.

What that means is that almost any fashion brand, not just the mega brands, can afford to get in on the game. “Web has given brands an opportunity to cheaply host and distribute video content for the first time,” Lauren Indvik writes for Mashable, where in the past, “prohibitively high costs…kept TV out of the media mixes of all but the most securely backed fashion brands.”

Mashable also broke down the web’s most popular fashion videos to date, and the results may surprise you.

Zoe Saldana on Why Her (and Her Hubby’s) Site MyFDB is Like IMDB for Fashion-o-files

As if you needed any more evidence that the digital world is taking over the fashion industry one click at a time, it seems even Hollywood’s A-list is on board. On the eve of NYFW’s close, I joined the perpetually chic Zoe Saldana and her fiancé Keith Britton in an airy penthouse atop midtown’s London Hotel to fête MyFDB.com. The power couple founded their style-centric web venture less than two years ago; short for “My Fashion Database,” the site was developed to offer an IMDB-like experience for the style crowd, offering fashion professionals a place to upload and share their resumés. MyFDB also functions as an image gallery, complete with both magazine covers and print campaigns, as well as a style news feed (MyFDBlog–ha!). Just this month, the site relaunched on a brand-new platform and added e-commerce to the mix–meaning that now, while you’re checking out that Lanvin ad on your computer screen, you can instantly click to buy the sparkling cuff Karen Elson’s sporting. Enticing!

Anna Sui Spring 2012: A Forties Fashion Fantasy
Reviews

Anna Sui Spring 2012: A Forties Fashion Fantasy

This week’s many wild prints, bright colors and feminine silhouettes had nothing on Anna Sui, perhaps because that’s always been what she does best. The vibe at last night’s show was cinematic, decadent and high-energy, with loud disco tunes and dramatic spotlights.

Karen Elson was the perfect show-opener. We hadn’t seen her all week, except as musician-Karen, when she gave us a taste of her undeniable ability to captivate an audience. She did it again last night as model-Karen–we were transfixed by her red curls, bright red lips and a maximalist, fully accessorized look that included a fur caplet, black turban, digitally printed floral shirtdress and pink, red and purple checkered sweatervest. A bevy of superstar models followed like Karlie Kloss, Jessica Stam and Jourdan Dunn. Also, Lindsey Wixson’s gap-toothed, red-lipped smiles were particularly memorable.

This Week’s Parties: Alexa Chung at Mulberry, Karen Elson Sings and Designs Shoes and Mischa Barton Looks Really Good

This week’s party highlights were for two very different brands, but both drew a similarly fabulous crowd (especially stylish Brits) and memorable music performances. Hayley danced the night away and drank margs with Alexa Chung Monday, while Dhani took in an amazing performance by Karen Elson and chatted with Mischa Barton Tuesday. Read on for deets and pics!

On Monday, Mulberry celebrated their 40th birthday in only the way that the quirky-cool English brand could pull off: With an all-out rager atop the Skylight Studios and all of fashion’s cool crowd in attendance.

Steven Meisel Produces Identical Shoots for Vogue Italia and W–Did He Screw Over W?

Steven Meisel Produces Identical Shoots for Vogue Italia and W–Did He Screw Over W?

Here’s the deal: You may have seen the 22-page portfolio Steven Meisel shot for W‘s September 2011 issue. The editorial features black and white “before” and “after” shots of big-name models like Raquel Zimmermann, Jessica Stam, Karen Elson and Carolyn Murphy. The story was a big get for the mag, considering Meisel had never worked with W before. Thing is, Meisel produced a strikingly similar editorial for Vogue Italia‘s August issue.

WWD noticed the nearly identical spreads, and has it from a source that Meisel may have financed the Italian Vogue shoot on W’s dime. Neither W nor Steven Meisel has commented on the issue, however a fallout–or at least a fault line–is bound to happen soon.

Watch: Karen Elson, Raquel Zimmermann and Alber Elbaz (!) Dance to Pitbull as Lanvin’s Fall Campaign Comes to Life

Lanvin’s Steven Meisel-shot fall/winter 2011 campaign images of Karen Elson and Raquel Zimmermann dancing left us all wondering if there would be a video associated with it. Thank god, there is. In this making of feature, Karen, Raquel and some male models do choreographed dance moves to Pitbull’s “I Know You Want Me,” maintaining their serious model faces throughout. Watch til the end, when Alber Elbaz gets in on the action.

11 Fall Ad Campaigns Improved by Cats

Here at Fashionista, we spend a lot of time looking at designers’ ad campaigns, especially within the last few weeks as the fall ads drop. We’ve even dedicated four slideshows to ranking them. After seeing the same ads in September issue after September issue, you can’t blame us for wanting to find a new way to look at them. Inspired by a recent post on OC Weekly, we realized we could actually improve the fall ads using photoshop and pictures of something else we spend a lot of time looking at: cats. So, without further ado, here are 11 fall ad campaigns improved by some adorable cats.

Happy 30th, MTV! To Celebrate, the 30 Most Memorable Model/Musician Couples

We’re sure that when cavemen banged out rhythms on old animal skulls, all the most gorgeous cave girls immediately came running. While musicians have never had a hard time picking up women, it’s safe to say MTV made it easier for them. The era of the model/musician relationship bloomed during the MTV era–models and musicians were frequently thrown together during video shoots, which was a job that hadn’t existed for models before.

MTV just turned 30, and to honor the music channel which helped to give musicians faces and personalities, here’s our roundup of the 30 best (and strangest) model/musician pairings through the years.

Karen Elson and Raquel Zimmermann Dance Straight-Faced In Lanvin’s Fall Campaign

While Steven Meisel had his girls catfighting to disco in Lanvin’s spring ads, he takes a happier tone in the ads for Fall 2011. Raquel Zimmermann and Karen Elson dance in unison in some classic Lanvin jewel-toned looks. We love how seriously they take their dancing and are really hoping there’s a video associated with this campaign. (Will Karen Elson provide the soundtrack?)

Check Out Terry Richardson’s Photos from Kate Moss’ Wedding: Jude Law, Paul McCartney, Carine Roitfeld and More

This looks like the most fun wedding reception ever. It probably was. Unofficial Mosstock photog Terry Richardson has been posting pics from last weekend’s Kate Moss/Jamie Hince festivities on his blog all morning. They are so casual and unprofessional-looking, like he’s just some dude uploading pics from someone’s wedding onto Facebook except the bride is a supermodel all the guests are beautiful and famous.
