Saint Laurent Paris Does The Timewarp: On Wednesday, we reported that Yves Saint Laurent might be dropping the “Yves” as a means of rebranding the label under the direction of Hedi Slimane, and the very next day the storied fashion house confirmed, sending countless tweeters, bloggers and writers into a tizzy. We, on the other hand, started to think about what would happen if other design houses were to do the same.
Kate Upton’s Busy, Busy Week: The busty blonde graced the cover of GQ (which coincidentally channeled Azealia Banks in her latest music video for “Jumanji”), spoke onscreen about her love of America (and large breasts) and even taught Jimmy Fallon how to Cat Daddy. How’d she do it all? With some seriously genius self-marketing skills.
Asian Beauty Products That Might Just Save Your Skin: Okay, so maybe they won’t save your skin, but they’re certainly bizarre and intriguing enough to warrant a test-run. From charcoal shampoo to a chin contour mask to collagen-boosting marshmallows, we’re curious to see what will be first to hit the shelves of Sephora first (or, alternatively, be banned by the FDA).
Model-Turned-Actress, Everybody’s Doing It: Models are good looking people, and so are actresses. Actresses appear on magazine covers, and so do models. So it makes sense that models might whet their palates and give acting a try, right? Right. We rounded up the many, many models who have transitioned from runway to silver screen and analyzed how seamlessly and successfully they made the jump.
The room was buzzing at the Friday night kick-off of the second annual Fashion Campus NYC. The program, which over 200 interns attended, featured a series of discussions and meet-and-greets allowing interns access to tons of experts in different fields of the fashion industry. Held at Parsons The New School for Design in conjunction with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), it’s one of the programs Mayor Bloomberg launched as part of his FashionNYC2020 plan to sustain and grow the fashion industry in New York. As an intern (I just started a summer internship here at Fashionista!), I was excited to pick the brains of Chris Benz and executives from Moda Operandi, Fendi, Armani Exchange, Saks Fifth Avenue and more.
And I certainly wasn’t disappointed.
The Resort 2013 collections are trickling in from all of the fashion capitals and while we have no idea what our holiday vacation plans are, we already have a pretty good idea of what we want to be wearing. So far, we’ve been particularly pleased with what our favorite New York designers have to offer Read more →
Need a night of cool culture for a good cause? The Museum of Art and Design’s (MAD) Young Patrons Gala can always be counted on to provide a night of fun without the usual stuffiness of more traditional museum benefit parties.
This year’s fete has been dubbed the LED Ball, and the glowy theme will be carried out through the whole museum–from a video installation on the outside of the building to fantastical lit-up exhibits inside. The soiree will be co-chaired by New York Ranger and former Vogue intern Sean Avery, Nate Berkus and designer Dror Benshetrit. You may also run into Stacey Bendet, Chris Benz, Andrew Bevan, Derek Blasberg, and Leigh Lezark, who are among the many notables on the Hosting Committee.
We ran into one of our fave designers, the pink-tressed Chris Benz (and Parsons alum), last night at the 2012 Parsons Fashion Benefit, which raises scholarships for Parsons students. He was his usual chatty self and was more than happy to dish on his experiences as a student and interning, and his date for the upcoming Met Ball:

So yesterday I got to attend my first-ever press conference for a presidential candidate. If all of them are as charming (and pink and cupcake-filled) as this one, I may switch careers to become a political blogger. It was announced yesterday that Barbie is launching her fifth bid for the Presidency, and that she’s being Read more →
The fashion industry is attracting more would-be employees than ever now. Thanks to more perceived accessibility through (sometimes not-so-realistic) fashion reality shows and the proliferation of fashion related blogs, it’s an industry that’s in high demand. However, it’s also a notoriously difficult industry to break into, so you have to make yourself stand out. One of the ways to do that is to get a stellar education (that hooks you up with stellar internships).
We’ve already listed the 50 best fashion design schools in the world and the 20 best in the US, but we’re well aware that not everyone who wants to be in fashion wants to be a designer (like, say, all of us here at Fashionista). So we’ve narrowed down the 10 best schools to put you a few steps closer to your dream career in fashion–think fashion journalism, merchandising, public relations, advertising, and much more.
A lot goes into making fashion week happen. And despite the proliferation of fashion reality television shows, there is still a lot that you might not know about. So, we decided to ask some of our friends in the industry what their day to day life is like leading up to, during and following fashion week. From the perspective of a designer, a publicist, a show producer, a pit photographer, a makeup artist and more, keep reading to learn how fashion week gets made.
For our latest edition of How Fashion Week Gets Made, we got inside the head of one of the nicest and hardest-working fashion publicists there is: Sidney Prawatyotin, Vice President of Fashion at Krupp Group. His clients are some of the best young designers out there and we look forward to attending their shows each season, largely because Sidney always makes us genuinely want to. Read on to find out how he does that and some crazy situations he’s encountered along the way.
