This is Getting Silly Now–Alexander Wang for Dior?

This is Getting Silly Now–Alexander Wang for Dior?

We find this very, very hard to believe but Vogue UK is reporting that Alexander Wang is the next designer to be considered for the hallowed Dior job.

A “source close to LVMH” told the magazine that, “for Dior, it’s a pretty tricky situation, as the three favorites really can’t take the job. Haider Ackermann is said to be ‘way too edgy’ for Dior; Marc Jacobs wanted the job a lot, but LVMH wants him to stick with Vuitton; and Riccardo Tisci simply refused, saying that he was feeling more than comfortable with the job at Givenchy. So nobody’s taking over so far.”

The Incredible Evolution of Daphne Guinness
Fashion Is Fun

The Incredible Evolution of Daphne Guinness

This week The New Yorker ran a piece on Daphne Guinness, and much like everything the style icon does (or wears), the revelations from Rebecca Mead’s fantastic profile are surprising, over-the-top, and kind of absurd.

Guinness would probably be the first to admit that she’s not exactly your average human. After all it was her own boyfriend, French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy, who said of her: “[she is] no longer a person, [she is] a concept.”

So what exactly is Daphne Guinness?

We have yet to fully figure it out but in light of the much-talked-about New Yorker interview, we explore the many facets of Daphne Guinness–from her style philosophy to her thoughts on Hitler–though we’re willing to bet the thing that will shock you most will be what the style icon looked like in the late ’80s. Go on, have a look.

Barneys Beauty Guru Jason Ascher Gives Us His 10 Key Tips and Tricks for Fall (Hint: Don’t Copy Kate Middleton)

Yesterday, we dropped by Barneys New York for a bit of breakfast and a make-up/skincare primer (couldn’t help it) with in-house beauty guru Jason Ascher. This job isn’t just about giving beauty tips to his clients; the role encompasses responsibilities as a resident make-up artist, beauty/haircare/fragrance/skincare expert, and personal shopper (plus, he’s happy to upsell clients — literally — upstairs to the shoe department or the Lanvin boutique for ensembles to match their new glow). Oh and his services are free-of-charge, although we can’t be held responsible for any impulsive purchases made following a consultation.

Ascher was on hand to convince us to trade in nude lips for bold ones, remind us to, please, please clean our makeup brushes, and introduce some new exclusive beauty lines launching at Barneys, including: Arquiste Perfumeur (“not your grandmother’s Shalimar”), Kre-at Beauty False Eyelashes (complete with a handy applicator tool), Radical Skincare (moisturize your necks, ladies!), Serge Normant haircare, Rodin Olio Lusso skin products, Claudio Riaz brushes and makeup, Hourglass brushes and cosmetics, and Astier de Villotte fancy candles. Here’s what we learned:

Alexandre Plokhov Spring 2012: The Cloak Designer Returns with a Sexy, Strong Womenswear Collection
Reviews

Alexandre Plokhov Spring 2012: The Cloak Designer Returns with a Sexy, Strong Womenswear Collection

When I was reviewing my Fashion Week schedule last week, I was very excited to see Alexandre Plokhov’s menswear and, more importantly, womenswear presentation listed on the calendar at Barneys New York.

Mr. Plokhov was the genius behind Cloak, a menswear label with a cult following that mysteriously shut its doors one day, kind of like the fashion-equivalent of the Willy Wonka factory. After Cloak, Alexandre took the helm at Versace menswear working with Donatella for several years.

Many moons ago (2008 maybe?), a mutual friend introduced me to Mr. Plokhov over oysters and champagne at SoHo institution Raoul’s. While we were having dinner and mostly talking about our mutual affection for really loud bands, I got tipsy enough to ask him when he was going to design womenswear.

Image of the Day: Carine Roitfeld, Anna Dello Russo and Valentino Sing Karaoke at a Strip Club

So, this happened last night. Fashion’s largest personalities got together to celebrate Carine Roitfeld‘s collaboration with Barneys‘ fall campaign and sing karaoke at Westway, a former strip club on the West Side highway. Oh what we would have given to be a fly on the wall for that party and know which song Roitfeld and Anna Dello Russo chose to sing.

Luckily The Cut‘s Bennett Marcus was there and he polled the crowd for their “first creative encounters” with Roitfeld. Bruce Weber’s answer takes the cake:

Could It Be? Carine Roitfeld Models for Barneys’ Fall Campaign

Could It Be? Carine Roitfeld Models for Barneys’ Fall Campaign

Photos from what appear to be the Barneys New York fall campaign featuring Carine Roitfeld have hit the internet, thanks to a Tweet from Jim Shi and the ace sleuths at the Fashion Spot (of course). It was announced back in March that Roitfeld had teamed up with Barneys to guest edit and style their fall catalogue and campaign with Mario Sorrenti behind the lens. And now it appears she’ll be modeling in Barneys fall campaign as well.

We can’t wait to see more of “Carine’s World”. Click through to see another leaked photo from the campaign (we hear it’s in September’s Vanity Fair).

Barneys’ Amanda Brooks Shares the Secrets to Her Flawless Hair

Barneys’ Amanda Brooks Shares the Secrets to Her Flawless Hair

It’s a weird fangirl-ish thing to ask Amanda Brooks, Barney’s impeccably well-heeled and well-coiffed fashion director, about her hair. But enough people had told me they were “obsessed” with it so I sucked it up, channeled Emily Weiss at Into the Gloss, and asked her about her locks after we had finished chatting about $39,000 crocodile backpacks at Barneys launch event for The Row’s new luxury handbag line.

Brooks was caught a little off guard by the question, laughing at first, but then, in a very refreshingly down-to-earth way, delved into her surprisingly low maintenance hair care routine.

“I do my hair myself,” Brooks said. “I have to say, I have good hair–my dad gave me his hair.” Which, she confesses, is a blessing and a curse. “I have a lot of hair–which means I also have a lot of hair on my legs, so there is a pay off. I shave them don’t worry.”

And in keeping with fashion’s latest trend of not washing your hair, Brooks only washes it once a week.

Barneys’ Amanda Brooks and Simon Doonan On The Row’s New $39,000 Bag and the Return of the Backpack

Barneys’ Amanda Brooks and Simon Doonan On The Row’s New $39,000 Bag and the Return of the Backpack

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were on hand at Barneys last night to fete the launch of their new line of luxury handbags for The Row (I’m pretty sure I know which one is which now thanks to our handy guide–Ashley’s in the floor length embroidered number, MK’s in the blazer, both from the Row).

“I think the bags are triple super chic,” said Amanda Brooks, Barneys’ new-ish fashion director (who, as evidenced by our Textbook post today, is pretty chic herself). The line, she said, fills a void within Barneys highly competitive bags and accessories department–a younger more streamlined Celine-esque sub-in for the Birkins they don’t stock. “Obviously we don’t carry Hermes bags in the store so we were trying to find something that appeals to that customer who is willing to spend a lot of money on a bag that’s going to last a long time and has a classic design.”

When Brooks mentions a customer willing to spend “a lot of money on a bag” she means up to $39,000 on a bag. That’s how much the crocodile backpack in the Olsen’s new bag range for the Row will set you back.

Textbook for Fashionista: Amanda Brooks!

If you’re familiar with Barneys New York–one of the city’s, nay, the world’s, best department stores–then you ought to be familiar with Amanda Brooks. Ms. Brooks, the fashion director, is a somewhat new addition to Barneys, having joined in February. Prior to her position uptown, Ms. Brooks worked as brand consultant for everyone from DvF and Roger Vivier to Chanel and Tod’s. She’s most certainly wise in the ways of fashion. But if that’s not clear from her resume, then just take a look at her personal style–she’s got a closet that makes any editor jealous. Brooks has already done quite a few interesting things at Barneys–see Daphne Guinness, Carine Roitfeld for proof–and we’ll continue watching her work at the Madison Avenue landmark closely.
