20 Moments that Rocked the Fashion World in 2011

We’ll cut right to the chase: A lot of crazy shit happened in the fashion world this year. While the industry that we call home can sometimes seem isolated and fantastical, many of its key players and events made headlines even in the mainstream media over the course of 2011.

In the last 365 days, we’ve seen our share of ups and downs: There have been exciting new beginnings and tragic falls from grace. A royal wedding and a Sarah Burton for McQueen dress captivated the world, while Galliano’s dress for Kate Moss made the fashion world swoon. We’ve celebrated the return of older models—like when 46-year-old Kristen McMenamy wore a bikini on the cover of Vogue Italia—and saw plenty of controversy surrounding very young ones. Just when we thought the boundaries of gender identity were breaking for good and that Lea T could kiss Kate Moss on the cover of LOVE, a men’s mag openly calls androgynous model Andrej Pejic a “thing.” We took it all in stride, and we’ve hopefully come out better on the other side.

Looking back at 2011, we’ve chosen twenty major moments that we believe defined the year in fashion. Which one made the biggest impact on you?

Fashion News Roundup: CFDA Agrees to Move NYFW, Designer Sketches for Katniss in the Hunger Games, and Kate Middleton’s Entire Wardrobe Could Be Yours

CFDA Agrees to Move S/S NYFW Dates: In the latest S/S Fashion Week scoop, the CFDA agreed to move NY Fashion Week to September 6-13, but won’t eliminate the second Thursday to allow for more men’s shows in London. It also agreed to revisit its scheduling after three years, instead of setting future dates in stone. No word yet from Italy. As Geri Halliwell famously said in the timelessly classic film Spice World, “have [they] not heard of compromisation?” {WWD}

Is Rudolph Cuter Than Karlie? Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, which has aired multiple times annually since 1964, pulled in 1.6 million more viewers last week than this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Maybe these stats will inspire VS to put some claymation models down the runway next year. Fingers crossed. {Washington Post}

Designers Design Their Ultimate Hunger Games Dress: Bella’s wedding dress – what?? InStyle asked 11 amazing designers – including The Blonds, Rachel Roy, and others – to sketch out their versions of Katniss’s fire dress for the upcoming The Hunger Games film. The results are seriously on fiya. {StyleCaster}

The 10 Best Fashion Stats from Style.com’s Year End Review

Everyone loves a list, and year-end lists are the best of them all. In the crush of current news, there’s a tendency to forget all the ridiculous and amazing things that took place six weeks ago, let alone 11 months ago. Style.com has kicked off the year-end list extravaganza and set the bar really high for the rest of us list makers toiling away trying to remember what the heck happened in 2011.

Their list looks at 18 different events that happened this year, from the Dior/Galliano drama to the Royal Wedding. Wondering out how many buttons were on Kate Middleton’s gown? How many names have been tossed in the ring to replace Galliano at Dior?

Read on.

Fashion News Roundup: Another Lohan in Page Six, the Olsens Have No Holiday Traditions, and Kate Middleton Needs a Lot of Christmas Outfits

Ali Lohan Will Cover Page Six Mag: Ali – excuse me – Aliana Lohan, who will cover Page Six Mag in the NY Post tomorrow, says she and big sis Lindsay “talk to each other about everything.” Do I smell a future tell-all memoir in the works?? {NY Post}

Marks & Spencer Lingerie Ad Banned in UK: The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has banned yet another racy ad, this time for M&S lingerie. Isn’t this the same country that managed to change the focus of April’s Royal Wedding from the bride and groom to the maid of honor’s ass? IDGI. {Telegraph}

Elizabeth Olsen Doesn’t Have Any Holiday Traditions: Elizabeth Olsen says that her family doesn’t have any holiday traditions. Are we really supposed to believe the Olsens don’t gather ’round the fire with some kettle corn for an annual viewing of To Grandmother’s House We Go? Sorry Liz, I’m not buying it. {FabSugar}

Margherita Missoni is Getting Married: That’s amore! The 28-year-old designer will marry race car driver Eugenio Amosnext year in Italy. Wonder if any of the party favors will end up on eBay? {WWD}

Naked Kate Moss Photo Sold For Mucho Dinero:An anonymous buyer won a huge, rare photo of a young Kate Moss at auction yesterday for approximately $25,700. It was between this photo or a new car, but I decided to go the rational route. {Grazia}

James Franco Gets into Advertising: Is James Franco getting career advice from K. Lagerfeld – or better yet, Don Draper? The actor/director/producer/screenwriter/perfume model/failed Oscar host can now add ad-man to his resume – he’s set to direct and shoot Seven For All Mankind’s multimedia campaign for spring 2012. {WWD}

Peep Vera Wang’s Affordable Wedding Ring Collaboration With Zales

While the world waits with bated breath to see how Vera Wang’s Kardashian-inspired David’s Bridal collection will fare after Kris and Kim’s union predictably unexpectedly flamed out, the famed bridal designer isn’t worrying about it. Instead, she’s unveiling her diamond engagement and wedding ring collab with jewelry retailer Zales in another inspired (and thankfully non-celeb related) nuptials-themed pairing. The Vera Wang LOVE collection was announced a few months ago and we dropped by the preview Tuesday morning and found the accessible bling to be quite celeb-worthy.

Sarah Burton On Why She Almost Turned Down the Head Designer Job at McQueen and How Joey from Friends Inspired Alexander McQueen

Sarah Burton’s coming out of her shell a bit and has given a few really charming and revealing interviews recently. She has profiles in both the Telegraph and on Hong Kong luxury department store Lane Crawford‘s website. She speaks candidly about designing Kate Middleton’s wedding gown (and why she almost turned the job down) and how Alexander McQueen found inspiration in the most unlikely of places.

Here are the best bits from the two articles:

Edible Fashion: Check Out These McQueen, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Moncler Frocks Made Out of Lettuce, Sardines and More

Photographer Fulvio Bonavia’s shoot ‘Food Dresses’ for Garage Magazine (which we saw on Fashion Copious) brings together two of our favorite things: Food. And Dresses. (Duh).

More specifically, the shoot features dresses by Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Moncler, which were created by an artful (and painstakingly arranged) array of foodstuffs including lettuce, oranges, anchovies and walnuts.
