Alexander Wang is GQ‘s Best New Menswear Designer in America

On Thursday night, The Ace Hotel got to feel cool when GQ took it over for a party celebrating the nominees of their fourth annual Best New Menswear Designer, which they award in conjuction with the CFDA. The nominees included Kirk Miller (of Miller’s Oath), Patrick Ervell, Riviera Club’s Derek Buse, Joe Sadler and Greg Ullery, Alex Wang for T, Michael Bastian for Gant, and Rick Klotz, the mad genius behind Warriors of Radness.

Alexander Wang was announced the winner this afternoon. He was chosen by a panel that includes Tommy Hilfiger, GQ editor-in-chief Jim Nelson, creative director Jim Moore, and others, and will receive $50,000 and a contract to collaborate with Dockers (last year it was Levi’s, a match made in heaven for Billy Reid, who took home the prize).

Billy Reid and the Burkman Bros. Say Goodbye to Paris Fashion Week at Le Baron

Billy Reid and the Burkman Bros. Say Goodbye to Paris Fashion Week at Le Baron

PARIS–I’ll be honest with you, I was just happy to be inside. Not because of the cold (and Paris WAS cold this week), and not because of the free vodka, supplied by our hosts the Burkman Bros., Billy Reid, and their rep, Megan Maguire Steele, (along with GrandLifeNYC), as well as Florsheim by Duckie Brown, but because I’d never been to Le Baron before, and, like many of us who exist inside and outside of fashion’s peripheries, I’d heard stories. (I’d written one, as well, which made me doubly excited.)

Since 2004, Le Baron has been the unofficial party destination for all that is fabulous during Fashion season (which, for some in Paris, as well as New York, is really all year long). ack during Bush’s first term, graffiti artist (he was a legend in Paris, with his Mr. Baron tag) and impresario André Saraiva took an abandoned brothel, partnered with its jailed owner, and made a nightclub for himself and his friends. It was a smash and reinvigorated Paris nightlife. Since then, he’s gone on to open several hotels and more clubs—like The Beatrice, in New York (RIP)—restaurants, and has teamed up with everyone from Louis Vuitton to Belvedere to The Rolling Stones.

But the sexy—fine, slutty—sweaty, druggy paradise that is Le Baron remains the soul of operation André, and even if he wasn’t there, his spirit of revelry matched those of us on the dance floor and in the booths, as people shook off the exhausting week that was men’s fashion.

Last Night’s Parties: V, Grazia, and 10 Took Us Dancing

PARIS–Look at the cult around Vogue or Purple: Magazines today are institutions, with their own admirers and followers. No wonder they’re also becoming the life and soul of Parisian nightlife. Increasingly, brands are pairing up with hip publications to ensure a successful event.

One day before the end of Paris Fashion Week, we put on our blue suede shoes and went out, wined and dined by various magazines.

Vogue Paris Turns 90! Gaultier Wants to Get Naughty! Lagerfeld is a No Show! Plus Party Pics You Won’t See Anywhere Else!

PARIS–No need to tell you French Vogue is turning 90. It’s been loudly announced throughout the fashion sphere, this month’s issue filled with much sought after, limited edition prints.

Now try to imagine a gala to celebrate this, right in the middle of Paris Fashion Week.

Add onto that Eyes Wide Shut as the dress code. The result is dementia, partial nudity and foie gras–very Carine indeed.

Last Night’s Party: OK, Cavalli Was Worth The Wait

PARIS–In general, I’m a pretty impatient person. Which means if I roll up to a party and there’s a massive queue, I typically just walk away.

But I really wanted to attend last night’s Roberto Cavalli 40th anniversary celebration at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Probably because it’s the first day of Paris Fashion Week and I still have the energy to do more than write. Also, Cavalli knows how to throw a proper party. I knew it would be good. At least the food would be good.

So around 10pm, I left my hotel and headed over. As I walked up to the gate, I instantly knew that arriving an hour and a half after start time was a bad idea. Yet I was able to easily weasel my way to the velvet rope. They weren’t allowing anyone in at that moment, but I assumed it would be soon enough.

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011: The People and Parties You Don’t Want to Miss

PARIS–So I’ve landed in fashion’s beloved city, and I’m seeing Dries van Noten, Gareth Pugh, and Rochas later on today, but amidst the 90-plus shows are a gazillion good parties. Here’s a sampling of what’s on. If you’re in town, these are what you don’t want to miss:

Roberto Cavalli’s 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner and Party: Tonight
The Cavalli maison is turning 40, and celebrating with a grand party at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. There will be “special performances,” which we’re betting will include Leonna Lewis and Taylor Swift, who both sat front row at the designer’s Milan show.

Vogue Paris’ 90th Anniversary Gala: September 30
Carine’s tome is turning 90, so expect this to be the best-looking party of the week. Oh, and it’s a costume ball. So wear a mask.

Last Night’s Warholian Parties: Toasting the End of NYFW

Last Night’s Warholian Parties: Toasting the End of NYFW

Last night, despite tornadoes and sheer exhaustion, I zipped uptown to the Hudson Hotel and then over to the meatpacking district for New York Fashion Week’s final parties.

First of all, I don’t understand places like the Hudson Hotel and Tribeca Grand. Do people actually, like, check into rooms and sleep there? With loud, crazy parties going on all over the hotel every night, who would want to? Just curious. We started the night at the Hudson’s Library for a party that had something to do with W, as there were copies of the October issue scattered about tables and fireplace mantles. The crowd was international, leather-clad, and kind of rude.

After that, we stopped by the L.A.M.B. after party in a gallery on West 13th. It was really cool, and not just because Kanye was mingling with Marc Jacobs.

Last Night’s Parties: Dossier Closes Their Fashion Week Pop-Up with Final ‘Homecoming’

Even though it might sound like a high school dance, don’t be fooled. Dossier’s “Homecoming” was nothing like a traditional spirit week.

Everyone in the biz has been so consumed with New York Fashion Week over the last eight days that we all nearly forgot it doesn’t last forever. Enter Dossier. The magazine’s ‘Homecoming’ event series was a five-day long celebration aimed at bringing the downtown scene back together to celebrate music, literature, film, and, of course, fashion. The intimate series of live concerts, discussions, readings, film screenings, and “happenings” kicked off last Saturday when Dossier celebrated the launch of their sixth issue featuring Freja Beha on the cover (the issue has also got a feature on it-girl-in-the-making Elle Fanning), and they capped off the week with one final hurrah.

New and IMPROVD: Conceptual Wearables

It’s no secret that neutrals are having their day, which means that the focus is on texture. IMPROVD takes an extreme, in-depth look at this from not one, but several innovative angles. On Tuesday, designer Valentino Vettori presented portraits by Yellana Yemchuk of a “carefully curated sampling of dynamic women” wearing a variety of black, white, and beige looks from the collection.

Guests were then invited to get up-close and personal with the pieces, hung throughout the incredible indoor/outdoor space at The Standard Hotel. The night hit its peak with a special performance by recording artist Sky Ferreira and Daniel Merriweather, following showings of Yemchuk’s film interpretation of the looks in motion on ballerinas. And with texture-heavy textiles like these, motion suits them–the looks were distressed, over-dyed, and much more.

Last Night’s Other Parties: Creatures of Comfort and Style.com

We didn’t make it to the Dazed party at Don Hill’s last night (although we heard a bunch of people got arrested, so maybe that’s a good thing), but we did manage to stop by the Creatures of Comfort New York store launch on Mulberry Street and Style.com‘s 10th anniversary bash, which was taking place just a couple of blocks away.

Creatures of Comfort, a Los Angeles-based brick and mortar store, label, and online shopping destination for Rachel Comey and VPL-lovers across the country, is opening up shop in New York. Owner Jade Lai hosted a party in her expansive new space last night, and tons of our favorite designers were there: Tiffany Tuttle, Comey, Peter Jensen, Victoria Bartlett, Daphne Javitch, and plenty more. And of course Lai around, not only touting her new storefront, but also her INCREDIBLE in-house collection, which both Leah and I melted over. It’s gently priced–in the $150-$350 range–and everything is a mix and match of silk cropped blouses, tie-waist dresses, and loose blazers. Most was made from a delicate crepe, with some cotton mixed in. And the color palette? Seafoam, terra cotta, white, periwinkle…everything we want for spring.

After fawning over the clothes, we chatted with our Carroll Gardens contingency–Izzy from RackedNY, Adele from Epaulet, and Jen from Bird. South Brooklyn is the best.

But soon it was time to head to Lafayette for Style.com‘s 10th anniversary party.

Last Night’s Party: Florence and the Machine at Mulberry

At the Mulberry party on Soho House’s roof, Florence and the Machine played an acoustic set (her voice, a guitar and a harp) for about 200 lucky onlookers, most of whom (all but about 50 of us) were idiot fashion fools talking throughout the set.

They played six songs, ending with Dog Days, and calling designer Emma Hill on stage twice to thank her.

Kelly Osborne and Alexa Chung celebullied their way to the front of the intimate show.

All in all, great show, potentially ruined by loud celebutards, and their wispy accouterments.

Click through for more photos from last night’s fete.
