People We Like

It was less than a decade ago when Tory Burch launched her eponymous label, but it feels like that emblem has been ingrained in our Gossip Girl-laden brains for eternity.

Now that the age of the ballet flat is falling behind us, what’s next for the brand? Burch sat down with Fashionista to talk fashion, business and how not to be a flash-in-the-pan.

Fashionista: It feels like the rise of “Tory Burch, The Brand” was pretty fast. One season your signature shoes appeared in the pages of Vogue and the next season they were on every woman’s feet. Did you feel like it was a quick climb up the ladder?
Tory Burch: The collection was actually years in the making. Before we even thought about launching, we had done so much research on both the creative and business sides. We launched the collection as another option for women. Prices in fashion were so high at the time and I wanted to offer something that was beautifully designed, well made and accessibly priced.

Every season, my team and I work really hard to control prices and maintain quality while pushing the collection in new directions. We have been extremely fortunate that the industry and our customers have been so supportive of us.

Last night the Twitterverse was sent into a near frenzy when Kell on Earth didn’t air during its usual time slot of 10pm EST on Bravo. Viewers were unpleasantly surprised to find a Real Housewives montage in its place, and they were quick to lament their discovery:

kelli1118: @peoplesrev NO #KELLONEARTH tonight?? I might just die!!
LovelyMissTyne: @peoplesrev wait?!!! What no Kell on Earth??!!! NNOOOOOOOO!!! Why no showing tonight? When’s the next episode??
DJGulia: ahhh why is #kellonearth not on tonight? Am I going to have to actually read a book at 10pm?
aoliver03: Looked at my dvr to sadly see Kell On Earth wasn’t on last night. Cmon Bravo less Housewives more Kelly Cutrone

We feel your pain.

But don’t worry, the next episode—titled “Love Hangover”—will air on schedule on Monday, March 8 at 10pm. We think this is the one where Kelly goes to the sex shop and buys vibrators!

To get your Kelly fix before then, try this little gem.

Vintage* Daria, Perfect Prada

We’re posting this because a) it’s Friday & it’s snowing, b) we always miss Daria mid-Fashion Month, c) it’s the best fashion film ever, d) all of the above.
*Vintage in model years at least.

ATL.jpgRalph Rucci is having a reality TV moment.
Last week, the couturier’s New York Fashion Week show disaster was the center plot on the premiere of Kell on Earth, and now WWD reports that Vogue editor at-large André Leon Talley will wear a different custom-made Rucci cloak on each episode of America’s Next Top Model Cycle 14, set to premiere March 10 on the CW.
The cloaks, which range in color and fabric but not in shape, were inspired by 17th-century Edo samurai tunics.
Will Rucci–who has long been praised for his high-sewing skills but rejected by much of the fashion media because of his unwillingness to follow current trends–finally get his chance to shine? We hope so.

Andre.jpgLast week, André Saraiva’s “Drawings” opened at Colette. The group of naive ink and pencil illustrations–a cross between Fritz the Cat and Yellow Submarine–comprise his first solo show ever.
André initially made a name for himself vandalizing French streets with graffiti; he later went on to open party dens Le Baron in Paris and Tokyo, the Beatrice Inn in New York, as well as many others.
He chatted with us about art, nightlife, and yes, fashion.
For the first time ever, you’re showing work indoors – how does it feel?
This has nothing to do with my graffiti work. I’ve always drawn on my free time, but never really thought of showing it. This exhibition is just a casual thing, my friends at Colette offered to show my drawings in the middle of the shop and it sounded like a fun idea.

At Wednesday’s Olsenboye launch this video, and a few other commercials, played on screens around the room.

The girls are very cute, and obviously not models; it’s both refreshing and encouraging to see real girls hawking clothes for real girls.

But turns out the blonde girl, who they call Elie, is actually Nathalie Love. Her mom, Lisa Love, is the West Coast editor of Teen Vogue and Nathalie just made a movie with Uma Thurman.

kelly book show premiere.jpgKelly Cutrone’s new reality show, Kell on Earth, premiered on Bravo last night.
We watched the first episode, which revolved around Spanish designer Davidelfin’s first Bryant Park show and Chado Ralph Rucci’s seating disaster, in the basement of the Tribeca Grand Hotel with Kelly and the rest of her People’s Revolution staff – it was brilliant.
The show’s the closest reality TV’s ever come to capturing the fashion industry. It’s fast, it’s stressful, it’s glamorous about 7% of the time and when your job is done – and you’ve done it well – it’s pretty fucking rewarding. Bascially, it’s like every other industry.

zoeypic.jpgWe’re always happy to discover new talent, especially when they’re as good as the group we’ve found.
We came across six photographers whose work we think is particularly impressive.
Zoey Grossman, William Hereford, Adrian Nina, Kaeko Shabana, Luis De Los Santos and Petra Van Raaij have a knack for photography (and a good eye, of course).
Their work is beautiful, alluring and captivating. If they’re this young and this talented, we can’t wait to see what they can do in a few years time. We’re anticipating big things for these young photographers.

I read Kelly Cutrone’s book last night — almost the whole thing in one sitting.
I’ve never read a self-help book, or any book that doles out life advice, but by the end of chapter two I was dying for my very own guru and a cable box, so that I can curl up and watch Kelly’s show, Kell On Earth, week after week.
It’s honest, sharp and, for lack of a less cheesy word, inspiring.
Bravo’s spewing clips to hold you over, this one offers laughter, interns, Kelly’s daughter, Jeremy Scott, and sharks. If by the end, you still think she’s a cold-hearted bitch, pre-order this.

larawedding.jpgLara Stone is getting married, and while we wait with bated breath to see the dress she dons, we thought we’d have a little fun and play stylist for the afternoon.
We’ve picked out a few things we’d love to see her wear down the aisle. Some are practical, but most are not.
In reality, she’ll most likely wear something custom-made, and probably by Karl. Regardless, we can’t wait to see what she does choose.

faster mark fast.jpgPictures of Mark Fast’s diffusion line Faster, which bows next month, have popped up on the internet in ones and twos, but someone just sent a link to the whole (short) lookbook.
We’ve posted the pictures after the jump.
While we wait patiently for this and his Topshop collection, we’ll help spread this:

Interview:
Can we expect to see some voluptuous mannequins working your Fall 2010 runway?
Fast: Of course! Those women are here to stay!
After SS10’s curvy-gate, a handful of people accused Fast of pulling a PR stunt, a one time gimmick to grab attention for his young brand, but Fast tells Interview he’d planned to include plus size models as early as three months before his show – and they’ll be sticking around.
His reasons for not dressing Lady Gaga are similar, but who is his dream client? Carine. Duh.
