Entry: Fashionable Education

As an LIM alum, I felt like I should have gone through a more general program elsewhere and be the girl who was into fashion. My personal feelings for the school aside, it shares several conjunct instructors with FIT and Parsons so depending on which you're comparing to tuition wise, you are either wasting or saving money (FIT is the most affordable). But like most education experiences, it's all about who you know. Granted there's a larger and more substantial talent pool at FIT and Parsons who may one day become someone important, but go out, intern your ass off, ask questions, volunteer, whatever. Fashion cannot be taught in a book, it has to be experienced since it's ever changing. When it comes down to it, where you went to school doesn't really matter if you know your shit and are a hard worker. Having a great sense of style and being pretty (and in most cases, rich, because fashion is not the most lucrative business) doesn't hurt either. I mean, Zac Posen never even finished college and he was the guest speaker at my lame graduation.

I interned in their closet a few years ago. It's a great experience if you're a savvy intern and know what's going on around you. All the shlepping aside, had some great opportunities to be more hands-on because it's a smaller publication. However, the masthead has changed significantly since I left there. And as far as free child labor goes, what internship in fashion or design isn't? Some may say it's just paying your dues.

xxi, I don't disagree with your views at all. We could go on about this topic for days. It's good to hear that Time Inc pays min wage, maybe they can set a standard.

she does what she has to to pay the bills and more importantly, enjoys what she does (how many people can say that about their jobs?). her business happens to be celebrity driven and a bit overexposed, which probably brings her down a notch in some people's books compared to those doing avant-garde spreads or who intellectualize fashion.

It blew my mind when I was walking down Mercer St in the beginning of December to see a roped-in line outside of the ugg store (shocked as I was that there's a free-standing ugg store in Soho). Maybe the folks in line were buying boots for their daughters who go to college in Boston because we have a rampant ugg problem in this town - although you could just hone it up to the weird New England weather.

There are a lot of people out there who have fashion blogs. Not all fashion blogs are created equal. As long as the right bloggers are let in, not just anyone with a blogspot, more credibility is given to this form of media. And new media will continue to influence print media as long as it's being taken seriously/capturing a larger audience. Kudos to Fashionista for being part of that movement.
