Entry: Is The New: Opening Ceremony and Carrie Bradshaw

Once Opening Ceremony went more mainstream, it started to lose its edge. I think that is just the way things go. The more exclusive and unique= the more it is wanted. I think that is just human and fashionista nature. We all want to have the fresh and unexpected. Jeffreys was edgy at first, but Nordstrom now owns the store and made Jeffrey their creative director (he must have made a fortune in that deal) and now the store is not the same as it was in its beginnings. Barneys also is not what it used to be since the Dubaian company took over (and that I got from a friend who works there) But I still love it and go there often, as I do Opening Ceremony. The store that used to be the most influential was Steven Alan. He took a lot of chances with the brands that he carried, but I think that he is going off in another direction, with his own lines. I love IF and Linda Dresner- they have not lost their edge at all- but their prices are another story.

I love them! They are kind of a must in summer no matter what length your skirt is (I am referring to the Steven Alan ones that I got last summer). They are great when your skirt blows up when you are walking down the subway steps, or over a subway grate a la Marilyn Monroe (it really does happen). And I am over 50, although you would never know it.

Chic for me- I live near there! It's amazing what they can build over railroad tracks. And the West Side Highway is level with the ground there, it's really just a street- not so bad. You know, they are calling that area Hellsea now (Hell's Kitchen + Chelsea)-funny.

Entry: How do you dress for cold weather?

Dressing for cold weather has always been a challenge of function and form for me, as I am more of a form person (I curate everything in my life, down to my dog's collar) but I also have another dilemma- I have hot flashes :( -it could be freezing outside but I am sweating!!! I live in nyc so i do a lot of walking which heats you up too. I have collected all these gorgeous sweaters and I can't wear a lot of them. So i have solved the problem by dressing in layers- tank, slouchy v neck sweater, or thin layering long sleeve T under a short sleeved sweater or cardigan- anything that i can strip off if i get hot. I have a lot of coats and i change that look daily. Always a big, wrappy scarf that i can wrap around my face and mouth if it's REALLY cold, and some kind of hat- cloche, pilot hat, this wonderful hat that i got on the lower east side that you can wear a million different ways, loose beret, etc. Those trapper hats that everyone was wearing last winter really DO keep your head warm. I bought one on the street last year when it was really cold. If I wear a dress or skirt, Wolford's polar tights really keep you warm, otherwise jeans with wool knee or thigh high socks stuffed into boots. If it's below zero, then i layer another pair of shorter socks over the wool ones. And the longer gloves are great- if i am hot and wearing a short sleeve t or tank but my arms are cold, i pull them up to my elbows. Otherwise i scrunch them down around my wrists. I have different boots to wear for snow (Pajar from Canada makes waterproof boots that don't look "uncool", and Sorels are OK too). When the snow is plowed then I usually wear biker boots to walk the dog, etc, because they have a rubber sole that doesn't get ruined in the wet and salt. I feel silly saying that I have given all this a lot of thought, but then when I have to run out quickly, I know that I look good no matter what.

Entry: How Much Does Your Umbrella Cost?

posted by fashionursta

Mar 05, 2008 3:22PM

Yes, but not a logo one. Your umbrella is part of your look, so it has to make a statement, the same as your clothing and accessories. I have several black and white patterned ones, inexpensive cheap ones from H and M, (I bought 4), a black and white polka dot one from the gap, a black and white polka dot Marimekko one, and a black one with white stripes along the spokes. I choose my umbrella for the day, just as I choose my footwear and outerwear. (I know, totally crazy) But then there's always the black folding one that I keep in my desk drawer for the emergency rain, and that always looks good.

I deliberately don't go out on on the friday after thanks giving, with all the tourists and people who don't live here coming into the city to shop. Just walking the dog is unplesant. I lounged around the apt and shopped online only because i found something i was looking for and it was 30% off! (LD Tuttle shoe boot slingbacks). Today I bought t shirts from Alternative Apparel because i needed them.

I have one thing to say, and that is- did you ever notice how all the fashion editors at the shows do not weqr makeup?(maybe with the exception of Anna and Carine, although Carine has not been doing her eyes in black of late) I live in NYC and see many of them in person close up, and while they look great clotheswise, they don't do their faces or hair. I guess it looks like you are trying too hard if you do it all up. Myself, I am trying to come to terms with my aging eyes, which just look tired. I will not have anything done to them, and I am getting used to my eyes without makeup. When I was in my 20's, since I have deep set eyes, I looked like I had shadow on and never had to wear eye makeup. And as far as the skin goes, if you use really good products, you don't need foundation, just a little concealer. I personally swear by Dr Sebagh, from Barneys, and they also have an acne treatment line.

Of course. You should wear what you love, and dress your mood. Life is too short to be unhappy and unsure about how we look. LOVE those white docs in the pic, too.

I am also a Daphne fan, and have enjoyed many of her pieces from Allure and T. She is quite clever and funny. I also think that I like her because we come from similar cultural backgrounds. I was surprised at the comment from Faran, who is also clever and funny in a similar way. That T magazine was awesome- it kept me busy reading it all yesterday. Good articles!

Entry: Would You Wear Barrettes?

posted by fashionursta

Jan 02, 2008 6:46PM

I have a wavy layered bob and I wore a barette in it today. I wear them frequently. I just don't do the babyish ones. I get mine at Boyd's, Ricky's, or barneys main floor. I often wear one to dress up my bob when I go out at night, otherwise my hair is just the same old thing. You can probably see a little of it in my profile pic. what also looks cool is using bobby pins as barettes- looks like you are not trying so hard, which you actually are not. I'd love to see what your hair looks like if you care to show us. I actually loved your hair before, but I totally understand why you cut it.

every time my grey roots grow in, i think "maybe i won't color them" but i always go back to my colorist, who makes my hair look like it did when i was in my 20s and wasn't grey (at bumble and bumble- the best!). i think that the problem is that not too many women look good grey- it depends on your skin tone and lip color, otherwise you risk looking tired and old. Why is it that men look BETTER when they go grey? Look at pics of Clooney when he had darker hair and no wrinkles and you will see what i mean. Not fair!

Entry: Would You Wear Tory Burch Flats?

posted by fashionursta

Nov 12, 2007 5:34PM

Absolutely not! Although I love the comfort of a ballet flat, I would rather wear something that others can't identify. Wearing something that screams someone else's name, to me, telegraphs that you don't have individual style. But there are people that need a logo, so I guess there is a place in the market for these. I also think that the giant Tory Burch logo is hideous. Tory Burch is a socialite, and I think that when certain people wear her stuff, they are buying into the lifestyle that she represents. And by the way, what were these flats doing walking around the East Village? To me they are so not downtown style. As Simon Doonan once said about wearing cardigans draped over the shoulders "that should be a felony!"

Entry: Would You Wear Faux Fur?

posted by fashionursta

Nov 14, 2007 1:21PM

The fake ones from the 60s (mod, flare-y or swingy single breasted) and from the 70s (fitted and double breasted) that I have in my closet are worn more for the look of that time (fake fur) and the warmth factor, rather than wearing it as a pretend fur coat. It's fun to take a coat like that and make it modern by pairing it with something that you don't expect. That's why Kate looks so fresh. All of a sudden it's a new look. Personally, I would never buy a fur coat, but I do have a vintage mouton swing coat from the 40s that i do wear, it's like recycling. I wear it more for the style of the coat. It looks increible with rolled up skinny jeans and boots!

Faran, who do you go to at Bumble? I go to Larry at Bumble and Bumble every 3 weeks, (the grey thing)and he is AMAZING! If you want to go brown, which I am, you will not be disappointed. He takes your eyes and skin color into account and does a fantastic job. He is really gifted. I cannot recommend him enough! He makes my hair look like it did when I was 20!

She was great in that movie. Her performance was amazing and so moving, you really believed that she WAS Piaf. I hope that she gets nominated. She deserves to win. She's talented and also gorgeous. It will be interesting to see what designer she wears. What about Lanvin? I saw some of the spring 08 at Barneys. I was speechless, the stuff is so gorgeous. And she would be gorgeous in it.
