guest #1, no. i'm pretty sure natalie meant to write "bazaar" as a clever pun. you actually read the post, right? or were you just skimming for spelling errors?

subtlety is a gift. well done, natalie. always been a fan of katie holmes, but i agree. more american eagle. less spring 09 face of miu miu.

Entry: Would You Wear a Galabeyah?

i live in cairo. and i just felt like i should interject a little to add a cultural pointer to this thread.

first, i know this isn't a big deal but FYI "galabaiya" (or "jalabaiya" in other parts of the arab world) is a robe for a man. a long robe/ dress for a woman is called an "abaiya."

i also know that a lot of you live in the west, so you can throw anything on your backs, style it up and make it look fantastic, but if you come to the middle east, it's a bit more complicated here and you should be at least aware of some things.

for example, the "abaiya"-ish dress that this girl is wearing in the photo- you would never never NEVER find that in the streets of cairo. there is way too much arm. and it more closely resembles abaiyas that women wear here as pyjamas.

last summer, i was living in DC and found this beautiful east african print abaiya and i began wearing it here in cairo. and on more than one occasion, my friends pulled me aside to tell me that i was wearing pyjamas.

also, word to the wise: sometimes foreigners come to cairo and put on hegab (hijab) because they think they will get harassed less. but hegab, like everything else related to women and modesty here, is extremely complicated. it's not just about hair. it's how you present yourself...

not to be the fashion police of the middle east, but be sensitive to where you are travelling to... and be cautious. even if you think you're just harmlessly trying to fit in, make sure you're not offending anyone.

natalie, i'm sure you looked great. and kudos for being brave and pairing your abaiya with your chuck taylors. it's not easy to walk in egypt's streets. xoxo

funny! a few hours ago when i was walking home from work (i live in cairo, it's almost 10pm here), i was thinking of cutting my long locks because im so sick of them and desperately wanting to feel fresh!

then, i immediately thought of alexa chung's adorable cut! i can't get her look out of my head.

thats it! im going to cut my hair tonight (i dont trust stylists here) - but only a few inches... even shoulder length hair always makes me wish it was longer. xo

rebecca, i really enjoy reading your posts but i have to say that i get easily distracted by poor grammar. i know this isn't a grammar website or anyway, but the other day i let the poor french slide... ("dans" is not used for cities ... it should have been "une très jeune fille à Paris" but anyway)

sentence one: "Ask anyone in our business.. and THEY'LL say..." ???

i'm not sure if other readers are similarly distracted? ...just saying, i usually stop reading a post when i see such a mistake.

either way, like i said, i like your style, rebecca so keep it coming...

you know, it looks odd on the mannequin- but i just know it would look completely amazing on! very contemporary cleopatra chic.

pair it with those extreme (rick owens'-y) cat eyes, and you're totally in business.

Such a clever observation. I love that episode!

The hats, if I remember, correctly, were the best part for me. And clearly recent designers have steered clear of those... Although, I don't think that's an entirely bad thing. There's already a lot going on in these looks.

ooooh all due respect, abby, i totally disagree! i know fanny packs can appear tacky- even the vuitton one- but i have a LeSportsac one that i just love love LOVE. it's fun and it always add a splash of color and design- PERFECT for travelling and running out the door with jeans and a vintage t-shirt kind of thing.

and how who doesn't love the little backpack?? it's so cecile in cruel intentions (reese witherspoon). love it!

funny. i was pulling out my winter clothes and layering items the other day- leggings (both thin and pants-like) and knee highs (both under the knee and over the knee)... and i just realized i'm so over them. they've just been around for too long. i donated them all away kind of on impulse, but maybe i'll have a moment of weakness in january and buy some more...?

also- haha- can't believe i'm doing this, but in kelly cutrone's words: "i like you, but i don't like your leggings."
