To Go Brown or Not To Go Brown

kate rocks black and brown.jpgHi guys, I need advice on a bag situation.

I have been planning on buying a large brown leather tote for a while, which, if I buy something even sort of nice, is going to be expensive for me.

So I just want to make sure that brown is the way to go. I wear mostly black coats and shoes but black seems so boring - and brown leather looks so good when it ages.

Most of my smaller bags, and evening bags are black so will brown work for day even if my wardrobe’s mainly black?

Thanks!

I was just looking at this jacket last night (the catalogue comes to my house)! I think any kid that did wear this would be really prissy and not nearly as popular as the kid who is heaps of fun and not afraid to get her jacket dirty. I personally don't know anyone who would buy this for their kids, but I bet their will be (grown up) girls wondering if they can fit into the largest size!

Venusia--

I totally agree. I was at a conference for work this week. I arrived there with my own bag, was handed a canvas tote to hold my programs and stuff, and saw many other reusable bags being handed out by various company representatives. No one needs all those bags!!! It is nearly as bad as if they were all plastic!

I can't believe how many readers are talking about wanting to eat meat or wear fur just to spite PETA. Now who's childish? Wearing fur is very different than eating meat or taking medication that has previousely been tested on animals. I do not wear fur, although I do eat humanely raised meat (i.e. grass fed beef). While I do not personally support PETA, I know that animals are NOT OBJECTS. Those who treat them as such have no humanity. There are many important causes in this world, and I certainly think fighting for animal rights is one.

Guest #2, it is you who is "sooo dumb." I cannot even imagine what you think about other societal issues. Animals are living creatures. They may not think exactly like humans, but they have emotions and feel pain. As I have stated before, I eat humanely raised and produced meat, eggs, and milk. This does not mean that I think the inhumane treatment of any animal, for food, or fur (which really has no purpose) is ok. If you really love the look of fur, buy a vintage coat or something. But in reality, fur coats are very heavy and can be stinky when damp (both my Grandmothers owned furs).
Finally, I agree with guest #5. Fashionista, you take stands on so many other things, why not take one on this issue?

Yes this is crazy, but it happens all the time. Just so everyone knows (esp. self conscious teenagers, etc.!) This happens ALL THE TIME. I used to be a photographer's assistant. Anytime you see a photo of an actress or model, please be aware while she may very well be gorgeous in real life, it is photoshop that makes her perfect. Acne scars, back fat, saggy boobs, you name it, photoshop can fix it!

I am so sick of this type of thing. It just sounds so trite. Yes, skinny girls wanted to be curvy, curvy wanted to be skinny. Big breasts wanted smaller. Flat-chested wished for a chest. We all want what we don't have it is a fact of life. MOVE ON.

#9--I can only speak for myself of course, but I don't think anyone has missed the "cultural aspect." It is pretty front and center in the quote. It is just that overall, people are sick of this discussion, whatever the reason for it. Every culture has subtle or not-so-subtle standards of beauty, many of which are different from anything seen in mainstream fashion. You cannot change your build (you can a little, but not really), your eye shape, your nose shape, etc. I am just sick of all the navel gazing from celebrities, reality TV, whomever, about it.

I can't believe so many people think being a size six is so awful. I am tall and thin but I wear a size six in shirts. I used to do some runway modeling and I remember standing in this room wearing a low cut lime green dress that looked awful against my pale skin. I had at least three men scrutinizing me, and they were clearly completely disgusted by my large breasts pouring out of the dress. They said some pretty nasty things, although I don't remember what specifically. It was horrible! BUT, the point is, it doesn't matter what people think. I don't model anymore-- I am going to medical school next year! I have fabulous breasts, my boyfriend loves them, I will always be a six and it is totally fine. You only have one life, don't waste it worrying about something like that!!!

I would just like to say that while I do not have a Longchamp bag, they strike me as very practical. My mother, who is a professional lady who does not care about fashion much but is always neat and well put together has few. And, she is French! The point is, most people who carry them don't think they are super awesome, they are just convenient, relatively inexpensive, and look nice with almost anything on the informal side.

I also love this post; I think everyone does this sort of thing. And while I have no idea about the cheap slut thing, I totally agree with #1 about the New England WASP outfit. I live in Boston and you hit the nail on the head!

This is fascinating, but not as awesome as I first hoped. I am not really into body wash and lotions from these companies. I first thought you could just walk up to the Chanel counter and choose whatever you wanted...which would have been beyond. But, still lots of fun.

Perfect timing! I just spent a lot on a pair of camel patent leather Louboutins. I rationalized it because they are perfect, I have wanted them for years, and I take really good care of my stuff. Also, I have fewer than ten pairs of shoes. Which is not to say those are the only shoes I've ever bought, but I regret the cheaper trendier shoes I've bought on a whim. I've given them away and now that my closet is paired down to perfect essentials I realized I had to make the CLs a reality.

On a related note, if anyone is still reading this post: Do the kind of jeans in the picture end up wearing out really fast? Because if those strings holding the hole together rip, then basically your hole leg is hanging out and the jeans would be REALLY hard to wear. There is a pair I want to get but not if they will rip right away. Any advice?

This is funny because I am on the other side. I have pin-straight hair that is just below my bust. It has NO wave and isn't the thickest in the world. I wear it up all the time because otherwise it just sort of hangs there. I am dying to have an Amelie style bob but I am not sure if I can maintain it. What should I do?!

The point is, the sandals are amazing. I've had mine for years and worn them all over the world. They are a bit expensive though, especially if the dollar's not doing well.
