Yeah ... the whole collection was a little too precious for me. The consumer in me is a little turned off by her in-your-face personal branding (is it about her own personal celebrity or her design talent?), but the marketer in me is impressed with her determination and moxie. I'm still not going to buy it, though.

Is this photo for real? Good grief, I love Chanel, but she's pulled together like a 70 year old society doyenne. If there was even a hint of irony it could maybe work, but as is it just looks absurd.
Incidentally, the expressions of the women in the background are priceless ... like "hello wtf?"

This is a great discussion! I actually was prompted to switch from cheap impulse buys to higher quality items by two things: (1) when all my pretty but less expensive work shoes wore out within six months of starting my first real job out of college, and (2) when I cleaned out my closet for a move this summer and was kind of heartbroken to see how many things I'd bought on impulse but never really worn. Now I'm a lot more brutal about my criteria for purchasing decisions (i.e. I need to be in LOVE and it has to make sense with the rest of my wardrobe) and I adore cleaning out my closet. I find I actually make better fashion choices with a smaller wardrobe, though, it's interesting.

Nope. I travel a TON and I don't want nice luggage because it seems akin to painting a big target on my things. It's like screaming "steal my stuff."
Plus, I had a $1000 suitcase once and it could not handle my travel schedule and fell apart. Very annoying. My $100 Costco suitcase, on the other hand, has held up admirably.

Hey, congratulations, that's awesome! Best of luck, but we'll miss your posts here ... hopefully you'll still get to check back in every once in a while. Nylon's fantastic, though, that sounds like a SWEET job! Congrats again!

Absolutely! I'm 26 and had Lasik years ago, but I'm finishing up my MBA and when I go back to work I'll be dealing with senior execs WAY older than me. I'm all for anything (i.e. glasses) that keeps the focus on my work and distracts people from my age. Plus, there's this cute Chanel pair I've been pining for ...

I totally agree with guest @ 11:45 ... less plastic is not no plastic. Disposable water bottles are still one of the most egregiously wasteful products out there, even if they use less plastic than they used to.

This article kind of broke my heart -- I feel bad for Ali Michael, but maybe it's better for her in the long run.

Oh wow, that's AWESOME! Wasn't it Susan Sontag who once wrote an essay on how bad taste can get to the point where it's SO BAD that it actually becomes good? Well, looks like we've found the mothership.

I'm with guest 1 -- I'm fine with them saying this, but it does leave them with a remarkably small target market. This hardly seems like a good time for arrogance from these folks.

When all you contribute to a relationship is a gigantic expense line item, I can see why you'd get dumped when the economy starts to suck. Geez.

This is interesting. I actually have found that I appreciate "splurges" more if I've thought them through more ... I usually need to sleep on an idea at least overnight and if I'm still in love with whatever it is I'll go buy it -- whenever I do that I find that I really love the item forever, rather than getting sick of it quickly. I went through an (expensive) phase where I bought whatever I wanted and I found I just didn't appreciate any of it as much as I do when I've really considered a purchase and saved for it. Plus, life happens in the meantime and it's expensive so it's nice to have cash on hand for a rainy day.

This is wonderful news! I'm thrilled, I've gotten a little embarrassed for Vogue.
Totally agree on the editorials, would love to see more creative spreads like the Romeo and Juliet one. Something edgy would also be nice, maybe Carine would let them borrow Emmanuelle Alt for a bit.
The other big thing I'd love to see is more intelligent articles. Vanity Fair does a great job of getting fantastic writers publishing serious pieces on interesting topics, I'd love to see Vogue to step it up similarly. Would be a refreshing change from the usual parade of pseudo-thoughtful socialite writers whining about their mothers.

I wore CK One through junior high, Chanel No 19 and Allure all through high school, then Chanel Cristalle through college. They were all kind of young (except No 19), so I went on a frangrance hiatus until recently, when I bought Frederic Malle's Vetiver Extraordinaire on a trip to Paris (I'm 26 now). It's AMAZING, but when I got back home I found out that apparently it's usually marketed as a men's fragrance ... I honestly don't care, it's just such a gorgeous, woody, distinctive scent and somehow it totally fits my personality and style. I love it for all those reasons, plus the fact that it's somewhat atypical for a women's fragrance makes it more personal and kind of ageless. At least that's my hope :-)
Oh, and for men, I adore Burberry Touch. My boyfriend wears it, so the smell just kind of drives me crazy. I totally agree with 12:33, now it's just kind of part of him and I would be heartbroken if he changed it. Love it.
