Adventures in Copyrights: Everybody Loves Louis

Mar 28, 2008 @ 3:40pm

louis bags.jpgWe got into a little scuffle with our favorite (ok, our only) Fashionista contributing editor, Josh Madden, when he showed us the Ezekiel tote on the right.

We said, "Omigosh, they stole the Damier Speedy from Louis Vuitton! That's so wrong!"

He said, "But Ezekiel is a skater brand for sixteen year old girls. They can't buy a Louis. So why shouldn't they have this?"

We said, "Because they should have a Le Sportsac or a Gap or a Banana Republic, like we did when we were in high school."

He said, "But this is so much cuter. And Le Sportsac is overpriced."

We said, "But it's kind of against the law. And maybe if you colored all over it with paint pens, it would be better..."

And that was pretty much it. The Ezekial bag sells for $44 (also overpriced, Josh!) and the Speedy is $650 at eLuxury, which - trivia - is the only authorized online site to sell Louis Vuitton.

Blair Gets a Top

Mar 27, 2008 @ 1:11pm

blair waldorf top forever 21.jpgELLEgirl cutie Holly Siegel pointed out a very curious top to us -

The B Waldorf top from Forever 21. We're pretty sure this is supposed to be an imitation of a dark dress Blair once wore (she was in her room, possibly talking to Jenny, possibly in the beginning of the brunch episode... anyone?) but the name just really seals the suggestion on this one.

The funny thing is, Forever 21 already kind of did this top over a month ago (eons in fast fashion galaxy), except that time it was a Phillip Lim knock-off. And mustardy.

The even funnier thing? The first thing we all said over here was, "Blair would never wear that."

Yes, she's real.

Marc for Hollister?

Mar 25, 2008 @ 11:11am

marc bird tee.jpgIf we saw someone walking down the street in the Marc by Marc tee to the right, we'd think "oh, Hollister."

And we'd be right, sort of.

Marc's cute Fly Away tee looks suspiciously like something from the teen mall favorite, and not just because of the general vibe, but because it looks a little too much like Hollister's Dockweiler Beach tee.

Could the above shirts really be a coincidence?

Or is Marc making a second career of copying randoms?

Hipsters Love Jersey; Urban Catches On

Mar 19, 2008 @ 1:32pm

americanapparelurbanoutfitters.jpgLet us begin by saying, we're very aware that V-neck shirts have been around for a while.

That said, anyone who's lived in a metropolitan city within the last five years will identify that specific deep V with ribbed trim and too-long sleeves with American Apparel.

So when we saw Urban Outfitter's new t-shirt called, "The Truly, Madly, Deeply Deep V Tee," (on the right), we thought first of dancing with our 8th grade crush to the Savage Garden song from whence the t-shirt name came, and then, of how much American Apparel's success must be hurting Urban's monopoly over hipster closets from Brooklyn to Berkeley.

The t-shirt coup comes hot on the heels of recent display changes we've noted at Urban stores, (at least in the New York area, because, you know, that's where we live), that include loads of layered jersey fabric and heathered grey styled a la American Apparel.

And the question of which store is more insanely overpriced is finally answered: AA's sells for $18.00 while Urban's wannabe goes for a whopping $24.00.

It actually makes us feel a little better about the AA stack sitting in our drawer.

Fashionista Crew,

I found this in People's Style Magazine for this month. When I went onto the Kitson website they still didn't have it up and couldn't find it at any other website so I took a pic of the magazine picture. Thought it was interesting that someone was already copying the necklace when it's not even out yet, and neither is the copy!

Ok, Thanks,
Katie

Dear Katie,

We can't believe it either, especially since the copy is terrible and the original is worth a trip to Tahiti.

Thanks,
Fashionista

DIY an Adventure in Copyright, Oh My!

Mar 14, 2008 @ 1:11pm

chloeeyetop.jpgWe've had a crush on this top since Chloe Sevigny wore it last September.

It's flirty without being overtly sexy and would match our whole closet

But it fell off our radar until we noticed this "Eye Print Vest in the style of Chloe Sevigny" on the ASOS website - a British chain that prides itself on selling things "in the style of". It's a pretty bad copy considering the factories they have at their fingertips. We thought we could do a better job.

So we ran out and bought the plainest white tank, broke out our trusty sharpies, and got to work. Less than five minutes later we had the perfect eye print vest.

It might not look as fancy as Chloe's, but it's a million times cuter than the one at ASOS, less than half the price and lacking those pesky shipping charges.

We think Chloe would be proud.

Adventures in Copyrights: WWMJD?

Mar 12, 2008 @ 3:30pm

jellies.jpg We know jellies were a big trend last year, but we didn't really get it:

They were sticky, they felt slimy, and they didn't really look that cute unless they were on a ten year old at the pool.

Still, the jelly trend has persisted, and while this J. Crew slipper isn't an exact copy of its Marc Jacobs counterpart, it's not hard to see how it happened.

The question is whether the J. Crew girl can swap her merino sleeveless sweater for this flip-flop substitute -

And whether her cooler MJ friends will let her.

Personally, we wouldn't let ANY of our girls buy a plastic flat for $138 (the Marc shoe) or for $59.50 (the Crew shoe).

But we did spend $200 on a Chanel barette, so what the hell do we know?

Marc Jacobs: A Copyright Epilogue

Mar 04, 2008 @ 12:34pm

scarves.jpg The Swede whose designs were stolen by Marc Jacobs has finally been compensated.

Swedish papers report today that Göran Olofsson has reached a settlement with Marc Jacobs and LVMH, after Marc copied the print for a silk scarf first sold by Olofsson's father in the '70s.

Olofsson declined to disclose his settlement, but we'd like to hear from you:

How much is reasonable when a major designer knocks off your creation? And should it be more or less than when Forever 21 does it?

Adventures in Copyright: Booted

Mar 04, 2008 @ 12:10pm

booties.jpgWe saw this Marc by Marc Jacobs tunic in the window of Forever 21 last night. We searched the website to bring you a 70's edition of Adventures in Copyright, but it's not online yet.

These Christian Louboutin booties, however, are marked down from $775 to $21.80.

Amid Forever 21's selection of plastic-y, awkwardly decorated shoes, the red patent leather booties stand out because yes, we saw them on the feet of some very important women during fashion week, but also because they don't actually look that cheap.

If you've seen them in person and beg to differ, let us know. But on our computer screen they've mastered the thick seams, the panel over the middle of the foot, and the gold zipper with the patent leather pull-tab from the Louboutins.

You still shouldn't buy them - but we're just a little bit impressed.
