Adventures in Copyrights: Shame on You, Heidi

Jun 30, 2008 @ 2:44pm

foley and corinna jordache rip.jpgHeidi Klum wore a pretty Foley and Corinna top in The New York Times around this time last year.

She's now selling the same top under her Jordache line.

We didn't even realize she was designing clothes for the denim brand, but according to this style watch page from People magazine, sent in by reader Amy, she's launched a capsule collection in her spare time.

It includes jeans of course, a sweatshirt jacket, and a v-neck pleated top that nips in at the waist just like the Foley and Corinna one.

Heidi, we expect more from you.

And Foley and Corinna, so sorry everyone keeps ripping off your pretty clothes.

Adventures in Copyrights: A Lesson to (Shoe) Boot

Jun 24, 2008 @ 3:31pm

chloe shoe boot rip.jpgOn the blackboard for today: Chloé, left. Forever 21, right.

Lesson 1: Where there is an innovative, appealing design, there's a Forever 21 copy in the making.

Lesson 2: White patent leather has a tendancy to look cheap, especially when it actually is.

Lesson 3: Colors are important. See the muted, darker F21 pink with significantly less zest than the Chloé original for illustration.

Lesson 4: Releasing a knock-off when the original is on sale for 40% off on Net-a-Porter is none too wise.

Adventures in Copyrights: Chronicles of Nylon

Jun 24, 2008 @ 10:00am

f21 and marc by marc nylon totes.jpgWhen we first saw the Pretty Nylon Tate Tote from Marc by Marc, at right, it never occurred to us that it could be copied.

It's pretty plain, basically a basket of dark gray, quilted nylon with knotted handles - kind of like those black nylon Prada bags we used to see around that were so ugly and yet sold like crazy, so people could say they owned a bit of Prada.

So we were a little surprised when reader Lisbeth turned our attention to this Nylon Quilt Tote from Forever 21, at left. The shape's wider, but the boxy-gray-nylon-with-tied-handles-and-side-pockets-look is still intact.

The only thing more surprising than someone bothering to copy this bag? The fact that the original retailed for $188...

Adventures in Copyrights: Miu Miu, No No

Jun 19, 2008 @ 12:23pm

miu miu asos dress.jpgASOS has just put up an "in the style of Daisy Lowe" dress, also known as the Miu Miu mini that's been everywhere recently. The "not-too-dissimilar version" (that's a round about way of saying knock-off) is available for 38 pounds and comes in black and white.

Besides the fact that this dress is far less cute than the original, we're wondering why ASOS would try to imitate a dress that was featured in the brand's spring ad campaign, not to mention in several notable editorials and even some magazine covers already - aren't they just a little late?

And besides, the silhouette and length don't work when you take all the costume out and try to make it "wearable". It's just not that kind of dress. So why bother?

Orange You Glad It's Marc?

Jun 12, 2008 @ 11:59am

marc by marc orange tank rip off.jpgAlongside Heritage 1981, ForLove21 and Twelve by Twelve, Forever 21 needs a "We Worship the Ground Marc Jacobs Walks On" section.

It would overflow with a variety of subtle, blatant and bad rip-offs, including this orange tank top with a placket of white ruffles.

Sure, it has fewer buttons than the adorable Marc by Marc version. And the cotton lacks the subtle ribbing of Marc's. But that's about it.

If you like it, we suggest splurging for the Marc original since those details are what sets it apart from a boring orange tank. And because it's on sale. And because it will last you about ten years longer.

Thanks Christina!

Not So Secret Obsession

Jun 06, 2008 @ 11:14am

asos & satc.jpgIf there's any sort of line, any point at which ripping off designers goes too far, ASOS just crossed it.

Right now, their homepage features Carrie Bradshaw's laptop and her oft-repeated quote, "I like my money right where I can see it, hanging in my closet." One click and you're in Carrie's closet, circa Sex and the City: The Movie, where you can continue to click on a variety of outfits "inspired by" Pat Field's costumes.

The thing is, when you do that, you're buying a direct Proenza Schouler runway rip-off, that studded belt, a horrifying copy of the white Ralph Lauren suit, all topped off of course with the Dior gladiators she wears throughout the movie.

The best part though - when you click on the item it says "In the style of Sarah Jessica Parker." We too can get a bit carried away with characters, (ahem, Gossip Girl), but seriously?

Adventures in Copyrights: Double Up

Jun 05, 2008 @ 3:02pm

mcqueen and madden.jpgExcept for the shape of the buckle and a slight roundedness of the toe, we can't imagine how someone would tell the difference between this Alexander McQueen peep-toe and its evil Madden twin.

So when reader Marianne sent them in for our archives, we immediately thought the following:

1. If it weren't for the Steve Madden label in the shoe at right, could anyone tell which is which?

2. When did Steve Madden get so good at these carbon copies?

Adventures in Copyright: Fib Newton

Jun 04, 2008 @ 11:38am

NewtonGucciKnockoff.jpgI am obsessed with this shoe.

Sure, it's meant for a woman's foot, but I'm in love with it nonetheless. It's sleek and sophisticated, the perfect ending to any nighttime outfit in summer or fall.

So when I was walking by Baker's yesterday and noticed my beloved Gucci Newton in the window, I immediately did a double take. It couldn't be, right?

Wrong. Baker's stole my shoe. The heel might be altered just a tiny bit, but the white piping and cute little shoestrings remain. All that Gucci goodness for only $69.95.

But no fear because the real Newton, left, is now on sale, too!

Adventures in Copyrights: Ruffle Wars

Jun 03, 2008 @ 1:30pm

aic geren ford forever 21.jpgFact: We've been fans of Geren Ford ever since they became a regular on ShopBop.

Fact: We really don't like knock offs, especially when they're of designers that are still trying to establish themselves.

So we were pretty annoyed when reader Sabrina sent in this Forever 21 take on Geren Ford's Ruffle Dress, at left.

Forever's is basically a carbon copy except for a slightly smaller opening at the neck with a safer color choice.

We're not really fans of the original dress anyway, but since when is Geren Ford on F21's radar?

Adventures in Copyrights: The Art of The Ripoff

Jun 02, 2008 @ 11:30am

mondrian dresses.jpg Confession:

We are smitten with the Forever 21 dress at right, inspired by two things at once:

The first, of course, is the famous Composition series by Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.

The second is a YSL sheath dress from 1965, currently housed in the Met Museum's archives.

"But it's a copy!" you say, and we're like, yeah, we know, but it's a copy 43 years in the making, or 80-something years, since Mondrian began painting his most famous series in 1922. (We still don't plan on actually purchasing it.)

Is it wrong to hope next, Forever 21 makes a sheath with giant soup cans all over it?

(Yes, yes, we know, very wrong...)
