The weather in New York has taken a turn for the cold and blustery incredibly quickly. It’s making me sad. Except for the fact that I can start busting out my tights on a regular basis.
What I’ve realized I’m lacking is an array of black patterned ones. Every night this week, I’ve seen at least one adorable pair on a girl in a simple outfit that becomes a little less simple with that extra addition.
Unfortunately the Louis Vuitton and Chanel versions aren’t exactly how I should be spending my paycheck right now. Unless of course I decide to give up Christmas presents for the fam. Last night at the hair salon one of the girls (who also happened to be a dead ringer for Rayanne Graff) told me hers were from Urban Outfitters and that she’d just picked up a whole bunch of them.
This Betsey Johnson pair seem to fit my criteria perfectly: black, not so dark as to obscure the pattern, and affordable. Plus they have bows! Even if those aren’t your style, there are tons of others to choose from.
Friday shopping complete. Now if that wind would just die down.
We’re not breaking out gloves quite yet, in fact, we’re not even wearing tights today.
But the cold is coming and until we find the nerve to buy leather pants, which after reading this quote from Stella McCartney we probably won’t, we’re going to lust after these from American Retro.
They’re the arm equivalent to thigh-high boots, reaching up almost in to your armpit (though not quite because that would be uncomfortable). The buttery black leather’s cut off at the end, so your fingers are free and you can wear them at all times and though they’re expensive, they’ll qualify as a classic in the right wardrobe.
We’d suggest pairing with something more like Garance’s MaxMara coat than the model’s Jenny Humphrey hair, but that’s just us.
As much as I totally loved all the bows on the S/S 10 runways, I’m starting to feel a little wary about how well I can really pull one off.
Our intern Steff came in today wearing the cutest big black bow headband and all I could think was that I might look totally ridiculous in something like that. She looks more than adorable (And yes, I’m a little jealous of how well she can pull it off!)
Enter this inexpensive headband/zipper bow I just found over on Fred Flare. It’s subtle, sweet (but not too sweet, thanks to the gold zipper detailing) and on trend enough for those of us not ready to make a big old bow statement.
Perfect.
Sweatshirts and little boy clothes.
Those are two of my great fashion loves. Add Stella McCartney and I’m, for lack of a better word, obsessed.
Which is why, though I’d like her whole Gap collection to fit, I’m just buying this.
The silk cashmere hoodie is only $88 and it’s made long for a kid which means it’ll be perfect on my very un-childlike body. I don’t know if it’s the laid back jock-vibe from spring’s runways or my urge to bundle that’s making me tuck actual sweatshirts underneath everything from my favorite blazer to my trench coat, but this might be a more work appropriate alternative to ripped American Apparel.
Now if I just had this to throw over it, I’d probably wear the same outfit every day until June.
On nasty, icky days like today, I hardly want to get out of bed, let alone get dressed up for work. No matter how badly I’d love to pull on a cozy sweatshirt and run out of the house in rain boots, I hate feeling sloppy in addition to my rainy-day blues.
As per usual, Shopbop has provided me with a cure for the common get-up. New on the site today is a jewelry line called Landver, which features a collection of moderately priced, on-trend pieces that are perfect for everyday wear.
This necklace, when worn with a t-shirt or sweater, could elevate any outfit from casual to chic. The line includes bracelets, necklaces, and earrings made in silver, gold-tone, and leather.
With most of the items priced well under $100, I’d even consider buying this cuff or a few of these cute, braided bracelets to pile on when I am feeling less-than-enthused about choosing an ensemble.
We’ve had a few themes that seem to have organically emerged on the site today: Rock ‘n Roll (grunge included), photography, and now the moustache, thanks to a couple of Hamish references, Ruben Toledo’s work, and this t-shirt we just happened upon over atTopshop.
Random? A little. But also fairly culturally on trend. Kitschy? Definitely. Wearable? Totally. We’re planning to work it under our now ubiquitous blazers.
Also we just really, really like a moustache. When we see one, we smile. And sometimes write poetry. So there’s that too.
Ever since shooting our video with Sasha Charnin Morrison and her fabulous closet, I have become fixated on anoraks—she had a ton in that closet.
I just love their casual, slouchy chicness. Luckily, they’re kinda everywhere right now.
I picked up a couple at Old Navy that have come in very handy during the windy days we’ve had here in New York this week. And this afternoon, I discovered this perfect anorak dress over on Piperlime.
It’s a jacket…and a dress…and it’s only $79. What a very happy Friday indeed. Long live the season of the anorak.
I have a well-documented love/hate relationship with earrings. I’ve literally had my ears pierced like six different time since I first got them done back when I was 10. I get fed up with earrings, they close up, and then I get obsessed with some pair or style and decide to get them pierced again.
It’s a stupid cycle that I realize could be easily fixed by wearing the same small simple pair on an everyday basis. But for some reason this just doesn’t work for me. It’s like some sort of mental block.

One thing that I spotted on girls all over NY during Fashion Week that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on was the long-sleeved mini dress. I loved that the simple piece was versatile enough to look striking in both daytime street style shots and each evening’s party pics.
Everywhere I turned, this style seemed to pop up. Hanne Gaby Odiele paired hers with a leather jacket and black booties at the Alexander Wang after-party, and Harley Viera-Newton wore a blue velvet Erin Wasson x RVCA dress to Wasson’s show at the tents.
Possibly the greatest thing about this dress is that there are so many affordable versions of it. The T by Alexander Wang style is on Shopbop for $90, and there is also this Velvet option for $86 that comes in three colors.
If we are in for a few more weeks of warm weather, I can’t wait to wear this dress on its own, but I’m sure it will work just as well with tights and a cozy sweater as soon as the temperature drops.
While everyone’s been freaking out over GmailFail, I’ve been trying to squeeze in some online Fashion Week shopping before my inbox starts buzzing again.
A big thank you to J.Crew for the arrival of this awesome three-pack of brightly colored socks that I will be heading to the store to purchase on leaving the office today. I went through a really huge socks with heels phase a few years ago and I am rather excited to bring it back next week. I’m trying to keep things as simple as possible with a few key staples which so far only included a good jacket…and now these socks. The pink, green, and yellow trio is definitely speaking to me.
This weekend will be devoted to rounding out the rest of the uniform. Why I wait until the last minute every year, I will never know. Suggestions are always welcome.
Ever since I posted that picture of Alia Shawat in mid-day snack, I’ve been scouring the internet for rings. (Actually, ever since LSD landed her own jewelry spread in French Vogue, I’ve been scouring stores, sidewalks and the internet for the perfect stackable rings.)
Alia’s are Denise Azira, Pamela Love and Matina Amanita from right to left, but I’m looking for something slightly more feminine.
These, from Robindra Unsworth, are kind of perfect - mostly because they’re imperfect and will go with any other jewelry I decide to wear. I love that they’re both silver and gold and I could probably squeeze a totally different ring in between the two to toughen things up.
Here’s hoping they get here before fashion week.

Seeing as September is just around the corner, I have now commenced my annual hunt for the perfect boot. Every year, it’s the same old story. There are a million pairs that I love…until I try them on. This cycle goes on and on until I realize I want a pair that’s no longer available in my size.
I’m making this the year such madness ends.
I think my problem is due partially to the fact that I’m insanely picky when I’m about to drop that much money (usually a good thing) and also that I know I’m literally going to wear them every day. I may love my shoe collection, but in reality I’m very much a creature of habit.

As the week winds down, I usually drift around to my various shopping sites. Just now I landed over on Shopbop and saw a bunch of Native American-inspired jewelry by Jacquie Aiche.
It drew me in with its color and the bracelet’s pretty cute. My style tends toward the hippie and the granola and the Adirondacks on a regular basis. But I’m not so sure about these earrings. And the headband is just over the top to me.
Plus I have no idea if there’s any sort of authenticity to the pieces (doubting there is) which makes me hesitant about the bracelet too.
What do you think? Fun arts and crafts or way way too much?
We love the nautical, and as we’ve already got our perfect navy and white striped shirt, new boating inspired looks are welcome.
So we’re glad that we came across these Freemont cuff shorts on Pixie Market, on sale for $83. They kind of remind us of antique illustrations of sailboats meshed with Eric Chase Anderson’s illustrations for his brother Wes’ films (particularly, of course, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou). We’re digging the playful vibe, and the slightly high waist.
And maybe this year we’re in for an Indian Summer, which would mean extra time to stroll around in shorts. If not, we think these would still look pretty great with a warm pair of wool tights for fall.

So I went on an epic search this weekend for what Britt deemed the “Purple Power Ranger Watch.”
It’s actually called the Time Teller and is made by Nixon, and it’s kind of amazing.
It would look cool on its own, but I have different plans for my new purple friend. I have a chunky gold watch now (which you can see in some of the DIY shots) and now I’m going to layer them. Ms. Lanphear does it expertly with her sick bracelet collection, and I’ve been dying to try it with watches.
If you don’t love purple as much as I do, the watch also comes in multicolored versions, yellow, blue, two pinks, and black.
At $55, this is the perfect trial/error watch. Solo or layered, I am enamored!

Remember this hat?
Sienna Miller wore it everywhere last winter, so did Agyness Deyn, and despite the hundreds of hats I tried on from Barneys to Urban to H&M, nothing quite measured up. Without knowing exactly who knitted it or where it came from, I was hopeless.
So imagine my delight when the picture at left landed in my inbox with designer Madeleine Thompson’s lookbook (filled with dreamy images of Poppy Delevigne, by the way) and the news that her line of chunky cashmere knits will finally be available in this country. Barneys is expecting their first shipment in the next couple of weeks and here’s hoping they save one for me. That’s the one good thing about all this rain - it makes it infinitely easier to imagine a fall wardrobe.
We love Wednesdays, not because it’s almost Friday, but because it’s when Net-a-Porter gets new stuff and we can wake up and wonder how the Balmain jackets and Halston mini-dresses sold out before we’ve even had coffee.
Today, we almost squealed with glee when we saw these DIY scarf kits.
For $85 you get all the Peruvian wool you need to make a seriously chunky scarf in bright fuschia, grey, turquoise, blue or purple. It even comes with new knitting needles and it’s kind of the perfect stuck on the L without a book subway project - though Faran wholeheartedly disagrees with me.
Meanwhile, we hate to introduce another fall shoe option, but these Thomas Wylde biker boots are amazing.
We love a dash of the laid back country way of life and the style that goes along with it. Maybe you don’t have a plaid lumberjack flannel shirt, but chances are half your friends do. We’ve got one ourselves. If you’re looking for a new way to go rustic, Topshop just got in this cute stag sweater.
While you might not be waking early on the weekends for actual deer hunting, this sweater (or “jumper”, as the Brits call it) looks like it will keep you warm when the temperature drops. Our mothers always layered us up during fall and winter when we were younger, and we felt resentful of the bulky Gap sweatshirts.

Maybe it’s because I miss the plaid button downs I lived in all winter. Maybe it’s because my iPod has been very into playing Nirvana while on random shuffle this week. Or maybe it’s because I’m already thinking about my weekend in the country.
Whatever it is, I was very drawn to this plaid tee while perusing the new goods over at Shopbop.
I’m seeing it with black shorts and some chunky boots. I’d even go all in with Doc Martens.
In fact, this may well be my next music festival outfit. All Points West here I come. And in a random sidenote on the APW topic: Get well soon, MCA!
