No Longer Just a Pretty Face: How Social Media Has Changed the Modeling Industry

15 years ago, all a model had to do was show up and look pretty. But in today’s social media-saturated world, a great pair of legs and killer cheekbones do not a supermodel make. More and more, a model’s earning power is derived not only by how many shows she walked or magazines she covered, but how many Twitter followers she has, according to the AP.

Name recognition has always been a powerful asset in a model’s career, but whereas in the past the public mostly got to know the industry’s biggest players through countless covers, campaigns, gossip columns and paparazzi photos, today’s social media has enabled models to make names for themselves. Now, any business-savvy model can get her name out there–and control her brand–through Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook.

The Top 10 Versace For H&M Items We Can’t Wait to Buy (With Prices)

Versace’s recently-revealed collection for H&M has been creating lots of buzz on for its wild, colorful Gianni Versace-esque pieces and equally bold campaign starring model/rocker Abbey Lee Kershaw. All the hooplah is great, but what about the clothes?

While they won’t hit stores until November 17, it’s never to early to start planning your purchases. With big, crowded (as the collection launch will most likely be) stores like H&M, it can be easy to miss the good stuff. So, we’ve picked out what we believe are the standout pieces from the collection.

Click through for our favorites, plus their retail price (some may seem a bit pricy for H&M, but that’s because they’re using high-quality materials like leather and silk):

Balmain Launches New Lower Priced Line, Pierre Balmain: Check Out the Full Collection

PARIS–Yesterday in a spare white showroom on the Rue Réaumur, Balmain debuted their lower priced collection Pierre Balmain. The latest installment in a series of digital shorts directed by Inez and Vinoodh featuring Abbey Lee and her band Our Mountain, clad in Pierre Balmain, screened in a loop on one wall while the collection was styled on mannequins across another.

While Balmain is known for being over-the-top–both in the way of blingy embellishments and price–Pierre Balmain is refreshingly pared down and prices start at just $180 (and runs as high as $1200 for leather jackets). It’s cool, downtown street wear in the style of Emmanuelle Alt and her mini-mes: the perfect motorcycle jacket (it comes in vest form, too); low-slung skinny jeans with subtle ribbed detailing at the hips and zippers at the ankles; loose tuxedo jackets; and athletic-inspired boxy tops and jackets, some with the “PB” Pierre Balmain logo emblazoned across the back like a varsity jacket. There was a prevalent zebra print that ran throughout the collection–it showed up on button downs and jeans–inspired by the designer’s first trip to Africa, after which he brought home a big zebra rug. The only ridiculous Balmain-ish item in the collection is the leather sweatpants. I mean, really?

Isabel Marant Spring 2012: Cool and Sporty As Ever

Isabel Marant Spring 2012: Cool and Sporty As Ever

The Isabel Marant girl is just the coolest. So cool that the models came to the show wearing Marant before they walked in it on the runway. And of course, only A-list girls on this runway–Abbey Lee, Joan Smalls, Arizona Muse, Anja Rubik, the list goes on. Le sigh.

Next spring you’ll be coveting chunky knit pullovers and mini dresses, graphic printed and patchwork colored denim, varsity jackets, and tie dye everything. In addition to the varsity jackets, the show definitely had an American-hip-hop-athletic vibe–perhaps an acknowledgment of the cult following Marant has in the US.

Alice Temperley Wants A Longer LFW: The Pippa fave feels London Fashion Week–which, at five days, is the shortest of the major four–should be extended. Says Ms. Temperley, “London’s better than New York Fashion Week now.” Alright, now tell us how you really feel! {Telegraph}

McCartney’s Collab for NYC Ballet: Stella McCartney has designed the costumes for a new ballet opening Thursday with a score penned by her dear old dad Paul. The designer feels collaborating with your father is “emotional” for anybody, but that “on another side, I know and understand I am working with Paul McCartney.” {WWD}

Fashion and Fantasy Mix in New Shopping Technology: “Augmented Realities” are growing in popularity on online shopping sites, where the obvious lack of trying-before-buying has always been a major problem. New and improved AR apps generally involve live feeds and 3-D imagery, allowing users to “try on” clothes, makeup, glasses… and grow horns?? {NY Times}

Sneak Peek: Abbey Lee Kershaw for Versace x H&M

Is this the first image for the forthcoming Versace x H&M campaign? A photo of Abbey Lee Kershaw in some patchwork chinoiserie and bold gold accessories has just landed on the Fashion Spot, via I Know Something You Don’t Know, and both sites are claiming it’s the first image to leak from the campaign. We buy it–Abbey Lee is Versace’s favorite model right now and those togs (and that belt!) are totes Versace.

Fashion Is Fun

Before They Were Supermodels They Were Super Adorable Kids

There’s just something inherently enjoyable about looking at old baby photos. It’s fun to see what people looked like when they were littler people. I saw this fancy gif on Fashin of all these supermodels morphing into their little kid selves and thought I’d troll the fashion webz for photos of today’s top models before they were catwalk-strutting, glossy-page gracing, campaign-landing beauties.

Take a look.
