British Vogue EIC Alexandra Shulman gave a talk in London Wednesday night and the magazine published some of the most interesting takeaways on its own blog–something we can’t imagine ever happening at American Vogue. And at Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani would have just blogged about it herself.
Regardless, Shulman, who flies pretty under the radar for a Vogue editor, revealed some interesting tidbits–like how one of the best-selling recording artists on the planet can’t sell fashion magazines, her burning desire to get Kate Middleton and how too-small sample sizes have prompted her to write letters to designers.
Apparently, music stars don’t sell magazines:
As far as we can tell, Beth Ditto is one of the coolest people ever. The talented and stylish Gossip frontwoman is beloved by just about everyone–especially fashion people. And for good reason.
From gracing the first issue of Love (naked) to sitting front row at major runway shows, to walking in them, to performing at fashion parties, Ditto, who doesn’t quite conform to the industry’s typical beauty standards, has been described by Katie Grand as “an accidental size hero for the size zero” and “a generational icon, confounding the tedious stereotypes of what it is to be a wonderful 21st-century woman.” She also has great perspective and we love what she said in a recent interview with the Evening Standard about that time Karl Lagerfeld said fellow plus-size songstress Adele was “a little too fat”:
Remember when Karl Lagerfeld mentioned that Adele was “a little too fat” in Paris Metro? He subsequently issued a statement saying the quote had been taken out of context and that he’s actually Adele’s “biggest admirer.” Just in case she was still pissed, though, he’s reportedly attempted to make further amends by sending her some Chanel bags.
The report comes from The Sun, so we’re taking it with a grain of salt, but here’s what they say:

Apparently the condition is caused by ulnar nerve entrapment, which, while nowhere near permanent, can take several months to totally disappear. High-End Retailers Are Doing Better Than Wal-Mart: For the ninth straight quarter, budget retail giant Wal-Mart is reporting major profit losses. But higher-end stores like Saks and Blommingdale’s have reported increasing profits, with customers spending more on such luxury goods as high-priced jewelry. It seems that Wal-Mart reduced its prices so sharply over the holidays, it actually lost profit. Would raising its prices and quality of goods (with Macy’s and Target-like collaborations, for example) help or hurt Wal-Mart? {New York Times}

Whitney Houston Dies: One of the greatest voices of our generation (read: ever), Whitney Houston passed away in her Beverly Hills Hilton hotel room last weekend. She was 48 years old. She will be sorely missed by all.

Back in December we broke the news that Adele would cover US Vogue’s March spring fashion issue. Well, here it is: the cover has hit the Twitters (we can’t pin down the original source).
Since his comments about Adele being “a little too fat,” predictably started an internet shit storm earlier this week, Karl Lagerfeld has released a statement to Paris’ Metro paper, saying his quote was “taken out of context.” How do you say “back-pedaling” in French?

Karl Lagerfeld took time out of his jam-packed schedule to guest-edit Paris’ Metro paper today, and the shit he says in his interview with the free daily is worthy of its own viral video–and that’s not necessarily a good thing.
The Kaiser sounds off on everything from why Obama should get re-elected (hint: it has to do with Mrs. Obama), to wanting to be a Russian lesbian to Adele’s weight. He’s sure to ruffle more than a few feathers with these gems.
