Seven Questions for Joseph Altuzarra

Seven Questions for Joseph Altuzarra

Here’s a riddle for you: Michelle Obama is to Jason Wu as _____ is to Joseph Altuzarra.

Curious who Altuzarra himself credits with “putting [him] on the map” by putting his clothes on her back? So were we, especially considering how very, very much on the map Altuzarra is right now.

Altuzarra’s CFDA nomination this week (the label’s second in its two years existence) further bolded a big red X on the grid, and to no one’s surprise.

His feminine but not precious collections (think Alaïa and Tom Ford) have become fast favorites of socialites (LSD), celebs (Rihanna), and some very discerning critics. We caught up with Joseph at his Barneys trunk show yesterday to chat about his success so far, what’s to come in the future, and yes, to fill in the blank of that riddle…

Forget the Eiffel Tower: This Guide Reveals Paris’ Hidden APC Outlet Store and Rick Owens’ Secret Hangouts

Ever wonder where Rick Owens shops for socks, or where the staff of Colette hides away to work out? Go Go Paris, a fashion insider’s guide to the City of Lights, wants to tell you the city’s best secrets.

Started by transnational hipster and journalist Kate van den Boogert, the series of pamphlets aims to shed light on another, more relevant side of the city to people who are sick of hearing about the Eiffel Tower and the Mona Lisa.

Having lived in Paris most of my life, I can honestly say I’ve seen as many tourists as I’ve witnessed bad guidebooks. (And the same applies to New York–how many Europeans come over and only know about Time Square?)

Well, you’ll be happy to hear that I’m impressed with Go Go. An example of the goodness: In the latest issue, Guillaume Henry, new artistic director of Carven, reveals that he likes to rummage through vintage books in a tiny bookstore on the rue de Rivoli, and his favorite hangout is a taxidermy haunt on the Left Bank.

Courtroom Couture: Who Dressed Best Before the Judge?

Courtroom Couture: Who Dressed Best Before the Judge?

As you may have heard, Naomi Campbell spent her morning testifying at former Liberian president Charles Taylor’s war crime trial. She may not know what Liberia is or what diamonds look like unless they are “shiny in a box,” but she does know how to dress for a courtroom. The supermodel begrudgingly delivered her testimony in a sweet, cream-colored Alaia number with a sheer cardigan.

We think she stayed appropriately conservative, but the outfit reminded us of when Winona Ryder caught flack for wearing a really cute see-through Marc Jacobs dress back in 2002 when she was on trial for shoplifting. It’s interesting to see what celebrities (or their stylists?) put together when they know they’ll be judged not only on their poor decisions, but their outfits as well. Perhaps real judges aren’t paying much attention to whether a potential criminal is wearing Fendi or Moschino, but we definitely are. So, click through for our favorite courtoom fashion moments.

The Sorry State of Saks

I finally went to Saks on Friday. I knew things were bad – I live in New York, I work in fashion, I have lawyer friends and retail friends and finance friends, a roommate from Detroit and parents who aren’t too far, sorry, weren’t too far, from retirement – but seeing Saks in worse shape Read more →

Adventures in Copyright

Adventures in Copyright: “This is an Alaia!” “An a-What-A?”

Everyone always coos over everything Carine struts in on the Tuileries each season, and these amazing lattice/gladiator/bootie/sandals by none other than Alaia were no exception. It’s the perfect combination of boot and sandal, and the suede makes them totally wearable in winter (with tights of course). Unfortunately, these ideal shoes are out of the price Read more →
