Alber Elbaz On Dieting, Wanting to Become a Doctor, and Why Barneys Almost Didn’t Buy His First Collection for Lanvin

Yesterday Alber Elbaz showed his fall 10th anniversary collection for Lanvin at Barneys before a select group of VIP customers, socialites, and celebrities including a very pregnant Uma Thurman. It felt a bit more personal and emotional than most fashion events, and that’s all thanks to Elbaz, who spoke both before and after the show Read more →

Fashion News Roundup: Franca Sozzani Talks Anorexia at Harvard, Nicky Minaj Raps About Anna Wintour and Kourtney Kardashian Defends Dying Her Hair

Former Urban Outfitters CEO Took a Pile of Cash When He Left: Glen Senk left Urban Outfitters without collecting his bonus, but he definitely didn’t walk away empty-handed. Along with his $942,000 salary, WWD reports that Senk received a “$5,000 bonus, $3,000 in other compensation and $1.6 million in option awards.” {WWD subscription required}

Franca Sozzani Talks Anorexia and Fashion at Harvard: The editrix talked to Harvard students about the unfortunate role fashion plays in promoting the ideal of extreme thinness, and how it contributes to the anorexia epidemic seen in young women (and men) in several first-world societies. She says, “Why the age of supermodels, who were beautiful and womanly, slowly started decreasing and we now have still undeveloped adolescents with no sign of curves? Why is this considered beautiful?” Franca failed, however, to comment on the fact that these same “undeveloped adolescents” are prominently featured in her magazine from month to month. {Vogue.it}

Claire Danes, Sofia Vergara, Michelle Dockery and Julianna Margulies Are Naked in Bed on Vanity Fair: Vanity Fair features the first ladies of primetime television in May’s “Special TV Issue.” They look mighty comfy in those silk sheets. {TFS}

Alber Elbaz On His 10th Anniversary Collection for Lanvin: ‘I Still Don’t Like It’

For the second ever issue of Style.com/print, Style.com’s foray into the glossy world, Lanvin creative director Alber Elbaz gave the magazine unprecedented access into his process leading up to his 10th anniversary show (an experience he likens to asking a “fat man to wear a bikini”). Writer Jo-Ann Furniss and photographer Nick Waplington give readers Read more →

Alber Elbaz Rings In 10 Years at Lanvin with a Song, Celebs, and a Glamorous Fall Collection

The creatures who inhabit the fashion world are often prickly and polarizing but Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz, who tonight celebrated 10 years at the label with the presentation of his fall 2012 collection and a party immediately following, is pretty much beloved by all. And for good reason. The smiley, bespectacled, bow-tied designer is self-deprecating Read more →

Fashion News Roundup: Katy Perry Confuses Balmain for Hooker Gear, Mila Kunis is On a Boat for Dior, and Terry Richardson Shoots Colorful Commercials for Aldo

Katy Perry Makes a Funny at PFW: When asked about the revealing mini dress the Smurfette-tressed pop star donned recently in Paris, she replied, “It’s either Vegas hooker or Balmain.” And upon meeting Conde Nast chairman Jonathan Newhouse, Katy blurted out, “Newhouse– much better than old house!” Maybe the windows weren’t cracked quite enough during all those blue hair dying sessions, but we can’t say we mind the entertainment. {NY Mag}

Mila Kunis Shoots for Dior: Mila’s on a boat–or should we say, un bateau. The gorg actress and latest face of Dior was spotted looking tres chic as she shot a new campaign for the Parisian fashion house on La Seine. {Telegraph}

Alexa Chung Will Host Scottish Fashion Awards: Great Britain’s greatest Brit (fashion wise, anyway) is set to bring her quirky-cool brand of humor to the 7th annual Scottish Fashion Awards, in association with InStyle, this June. The awards celebrate the best of Scotch talent, and past honorees have included Christopher Kane, Holly Fulton, and Jonathan Saunders. Here’s hoping the program allows for multiple wardrobe changes for Alexa, a la Anne Hathaway at last year’s Oscars. {InStyle}

Lanvin Spring 2012: Sexy Separates, Sweaty Scene and Alber Elbaz on Designing for the “Internet Zone Time”

Only someone like Alber Elbaz could hold the fashion sweat set captive in a sauna l’Espace Ephemere for nearly an hour and not enrage the well-dressed (and not for 90 degree weather, we might add) masses. Lovely illustrated fans were placed on every seat, and bons bons and bellinis that were passed until right before Read more →

Watch: Karen Elson, Raquel Zimmermann and Alber Elbaz (!) Dance to Pitbull as Lanvin’s Fall Campaign Comes to Life

Lanvin’s Steven Meisel-shot fall/winter 2011 campaign images of Karen Elson and Raquel Zimmermann dancing left us all wondering if there would be a video associated with it. Thank god, there is. In this making of feature, Karen, Raquel and some male models do choreographed dance moves to Pitbull’s “I Know You Want Me,” maintaining their serious model faces throughout. Watch til the end, when Alber Elbaz gets in on the action.

Fashion News Roundup: Alber Elbaz Doesn’t Use the Internets, America’s Worst Dressed Cities, and a Cartoon Supermodel

America’s Worst Dressed: GQ rounded up the 40 worst dressed cities in America. They call the poll they used “deeply scientific.” Do you live in one of these cities? If so, you should probably move. {GQ}

Stenciled Dip Dye, Coming To A Salon Near You: Bleach is a Brit salon that specializes in zany hair color treatments, including bleaching, rainbow dip dying, and even stenciled words. They originated as a stand in London’s WAH nails but now have their own place in the Oxford Topshop and are making plans to come stateside. Looks like Lauren Conrad was ahead of the curve after all. {Pop}

The First Cartoon Supermodel: UK modeling agency Premier just signed Polly Bean, a character from the satirical comic strip Supermodels to its Special Division. The 20-year-old strip has earned fans like Phillip Treacy and the late Isabella Blow through Bean’s witty commentary on the industry. {Vogue UK}

Seat Changes At Vogue: Rickie De Sole has been promoted from accessories editor to Filipa Fino’s old position of senior accessories editor. Sole’s position will be filled by Leith Speer Barton, Anna Wintour’s executive assistant. So now the question is, who will be Nuclear Wintour’s new Anne Hathaway? {WWD}

Our 20 Favorite Images from the Self Service Online Archives

Our 20 Favorite Images from the Self Service Online Archives

Yesterday, Self Service, the hit French fashion magazine with an insider tilt, relaunched its website with full archives. The goal was to create a database of everyone that’s ever been in Self Service. It’s like an online encyclopedia filled with people who are really, really important in the fashion industry. (Seriously, there’s an index.)

Now you know I love a good online archive, so I spent yesterday afternoon scouring Self Service‘s to bring you the most iconic, weirdest, and captivating photos from the book’s 16 year history. While my computer’s hard drive is now 25% covered in images of Hannelore Knuts, I’ve managed to pull out 20 photos that are particularly noteworthy.

But don’t rely on me entirely. After checking out my edit, go to Self Service’s new site and find out for yourself.
